Coventry, Birmingham, Manchester — or YOUR town tomorrow? More than 200 extra police officers are being drafted into the Cleveland area after a terrifying week of violence and tragedy. Nine people have died in separate incidents, while police investigate suspected organised crime, a fatal house fire, a stabbing and other serious incidents. But here's the question we need to ask: HOW DID WE GET HERE? For years we've watched communities struggle with drugs, organised crime, anti-social behaviour and a growing minority who appear to have absolutely no respect for the police, the law or the communities they live in. We've tolerated too much for too long. Weak policing. A justice system that too often seems incapable of providing a serious deterrent. Drug dealing and drug abuse destroying communities. Parents failing to take responsibility for their kids. Anti-social behaviour dismissed as something we simply have to put up with. Even Cleveland Police currently lists organised crime, drug dealing, criminal exploitation, anti-social behaviour and community intimidation among neighbourhood priorities in parts of Middlesbrough. ENOUGH. I want ZERO TOLERANCE. More police on the streets. Tough action against organised crime and drug dealers. Proper punishment for violent offenders. Parents taking responsibility. And communities where decent, law-abiding people — not criminals — are in charge. Andy Burnham, this is bigger than another TikTok video or another PR announcement. GET TOUGH. GET A GRIP. RESTORE LAW AND ORDER. Because what we're witnessing around Middlesbrough should be a warning to the whole country. I came out seeing Britain more clearly than ever — and what I see frightens me. Yesterday I had an eye procedure. But it wasn't the doctors who really opened my eyes. It was one of the nurses. We started talking about the horrific A66 crash that killed PCs Matthew Blades and Tom Clough. Two police officers went to work to protect the public and never came home. Yet Labour MP and Home Office minister Anna Turley offered condolences to all SEVEN families — including the families of the five men in the car that had been pursued by police before travelling the WRONG WAY down the A66 and smashing into the officers' vehicle. What the hell has happened to this country? Then my nurse told me something that made my blood run cold. She is frightened that a man who attacked her is being released under the early-release scheme. Think about that. She goes to work. She looks after patients. She raises her children. She pays her taxes. She obeys the law. And SHE is frightened because the system is releasing the man who attacked her. Then we talked about the Channel, illegal immigration and public concern about serious sexual offences committed by some migrants. And here's my question for the Government: Why won't you give us the fullest possible figures on the ethnicity and immigration status of sexual offenders? Publish the data. ALL OF IT. Let the British people see the facts and make up their own minds. What are you frightened the figures might show? Then my nurse summed up the mood of this country in one devastating sentence: "WHY DO I BOTHER?" Why bother getting up and going to work? Why bother getting your kids to school? Why bother paying your taxes? Why bother obeying the law? Why bother doing the right thing when you increasingly feel that law-abiding people come LAST? That is what politicians need to understand. Millions of ordinary people aren't asking for special treatment. THEY WANT FAIR TREATMENT. They want criminals punished. They want victims protected. They want secure borders. They want the truth from their Government. And they want to stop being smeared as gammons, bigots or racists simply because they dare to ask difficult questions. Britain is angry. DOES RICKY GERVAIS WRITE BURNHAM'S POLICIES?! The Home Office has produced a nine-page guide for asylum seekers explaining that rape is illegal, women have equal rights, sexual consent matters, domestic abuse is illegal and you cannot have sex with children under 16. Seriously?! If the Government believes some people arriving in Britain need to be TOLD these things, isn't that itself a massive warning sign? And what exactly is a pamphlet supposed to achieve? This feels like the ultimate case of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted. Instead of another leaflet, another poster and another Government initiative, why aren't we having the much bigger debate about who is entering Britain, how they are vetted, where they are housed and what happens when they commit serious crimes? There have been horrific cases involving individual asylum seekers convicted of sexual offences. Those crimes have real victims — women and children whose suffering isn't remotely funny. That's why this becomes a dark, dark comedy rather than something we can simply laugh about. For years, people raising legitimate questions about young undocumented men being accommodated in hotels, HMOs and other facilities have sometimes felt dismissed as racists or bigots. But asking questions about safeguarding, security and vetting is not the same thing as claiming every migrant is dangerous. Meanwhile, what is Andy Burnham talking about? He's embraced TikTok politics, he's been talking about bread rolls, and today he's announcing another initiative — this time tackling fly-tipping. Of course fly-tipping matters. But Britain also faces enormous questions about borders, crime, prisons, housing and the cost of living. Are our politicians concentrating on the country's biggest priorities — or concentrating on producing the next social-media clip? More spending. More schemes. More interventions. More announcements. MORE TIKTOK VIDEOS! But there is one very simple question that somebody has to ask: HOW THE HELL IS HE GOING TO PAY FOR IT ALL? Burnham is supposed to be running a COUNTRY — but increasingly he seems to be behaving like he's still a Mayor with a magic money tree. He's gone from MAYOR to MaRE — a NIGHTMARE! And while Burnham tries to please everybody, is he completely missing the priorities of millions of ordinary British people? Today Portugal has taken decisive action and enacted a ban on concealing faces in public, including full-face veils. Denmark has had a face-covering ban for years. Whatever you think of those policies, they raise a bigger question: could you imagine Burnham taking such a tough and potentially unpopular decision? Or is he fundamentally a PEOPLE PLEASER rather than a LEADER? Meanwhile Britain has a prison overcrowding crisis and a deeply controversial early-release policy. Our borders still aren't secure. We continue paying France millions while small boats continue crossing the Channel. And we're having a national argument about whether foreign nationals should have access to British welfare regardless of how much — or how little — they have contributed. IT'S BONKERS BRITAIN! The borders. The prisons. The NHS. Housing. Roads. Water. Government IT. The criminal justice system. Major infrastructure. We pay more and more tax — but where are the results? So tonight I'm asking a deliberately provocative question: IS ONE OF BRITAIN'S BIGGEST PROBLEMS THAT TOO MANY OF THE PEOPLE RUNNING THE COUNTRY HAVE NEVER HAD A PROPER JOB IN THE REAL WORLD? Look at the people at the top of British politics. How many have spent a substantial part of their working lives running a business, meeting a payroll, selling something, making something, working on a building site, driving a van, working in a factory, serving customers or simply dealing with the pressures ordinary workers and employers face every day? Instead we've created the PROFESSIONAL POLITICIAN. University. Political researcher. Think tank. Union. Special adviser. MP. Minister. Cabinet. Politics isn't something they enter after experiencing life. POLITICS IS THEIR LIFE. And I think that matters. Where are the awkward, independent-minded MPs prepared to tell their own party: "That's complete rubbish and I'm not voting for it"? Where are the characters? The entrepreneurs? The people who've actually succeeded — or failed — outside Westminster? Last night millions of phones across England and Wales suddenly started screaming with an Emergency Alert warning about the extreme wildfire risk. Fine. Fire chiefs believed the danger justified it. But it got me thinking. WHAT DOES THIS GOVERNMENT CONSIDER AN EMERGENCY? We're in August. It's extremely hot. Most of us can work that out. But what about the prisons? What about the possibility of serious offenders being released early because we haven't built enough prison places? What about the extraordinary controversy over two men convicted of the manslaughter of PC Andrew Harper potentially qualifying for early release? What about foreign national offenders occupying prison places when the Government should be doing everything possible to remove those who can lawfully be deported? And what about the Channel? More than 3,000 people had crossed in small boats in the first fortnight of Andy Burnham's premiership, despite his promise to be "relentless" on the issue. These are the things many ordinary people are talking about. So why does Westminster so often appear to be having a completely different conversation? THEY DON'T LIVE IN OUR WORLD. And perhaps that's why they're so frightened of politicians who can bypass Westminster and connect directly with voters. Whatever you think of Nigel Farage, he understands how to communicate with people who believe the political establishment neither listens to them nor understands them. Perhaps that's the real political divide now. Not simply LEFT versus RIGHT. THE POLITICAL CLASS versus EVERYONE ELSE I want YOUR views. Is Britain suffering because we've created a generation of career politicians? Should MPs have substantial real-world experience before entering Parliament? Would Parliament be better with more builders, nurses, engineers, soldiers, shopkeepers, farmers, factory workers and entrepreneurs — and fewer professional politicians? BURNHAM'S DELIBERATELY MISSING THE POINT! We're being encouraged to argue about WHERE illegal migrants should be housed. Cities? Towns? Rural communities? Hotels? Camps? But I'm asking something much more fundamental: WHY ARE THEY STILL COMING ACROSS THE CHANNEL IN THE FIRST PLACE? Successive governments have failed to control Britain's borders — and now ordinary communities are effectively being told they have to "do their bit" and accept the consequences. No! POLITICIANS NEED TO DO THEIR BIT. Secure the border. Stop the boats. Process claims rapidly. Remove people who have no legal right to remain. And create a system that actually deters illegal crossings rather than endlessly managing them after they've happened. That's why I believe Burnham is deliberately missing the point. By turning today's argument into a row about whether migrants should be moved from cities into rural areas, the debate shifts away from the enormous political failure at the heart of this crisis: BRITAIN HAS LOST CONTROL OF ITS BORDERS. And before somebody inevitably starts screaming "racist" or "far-right", let's be absolutely clear. Wanting secure borders isn't racist. Wanting immigration laws enforced isn't racist. Wanting failed asylum seekers removed isn't racist. And believing governments should plan properly instead of constantly firefighting crises isn't extremist. The same principle applies to our prisons. We don't want dangerous prisoners released early simply because politicians failed to provide enough prison places. When the controversy involves men convicted over the killing of PC Andrew Harper, the public understandably wants to know why the system reached this position. Governments know roughly how many prisoners they have. They know roughly how many people are entering the asylum system. SO PLAN AHEAD! BUILD THE CAPACITY! CONTROL THE BORDER! And then, to cap it all, Burnham is reportedly calling a COBRA meeting over the hot weather. IT'S AUGUST! Where's that emergency mentality over the Channel? Where's the COBRA-level urgency over prison capacity? Where's the detailed plan to stop illegal crossings rather than simply deciding where people should be housed once they're here? At least with Starmer you knew what you were getting. He couldn't communicate, couldn't connect with ordinary people and, in my view, you could see the political spin coming a mile off. Burnham is different. He is a brilliant communicator. He understands PR. He talks the language of ordinary people. But where are the RESULTS? That's what tonight's show is about. Take the disgraceful situation surrounding PC Andrew Harper's killers. After massive public anger, Burnham now says he is "increasingly confident" they can be prevented from being released early. Good. I hope he succeeds. BUT WHY DID WE GET INTO THIS POSITION IN THE FIRST PLACE? Why weren't killers like these excluded from the early-release scheme from day one? Why has it taken outrage from the Harper family, the police and hundreds of thousands of ordinary people to force action? And then there are the SMALL BOATS. Burnham promised to be "relentless". But people are still crossing the Channel. Since he entered Downing Street, thousands more have made the journey. 3000 in total! We don't need another slogan. WE NEED RESULTS. Then there's Burnham's growing shopping list of promises: £2 bus fares, help for pubs, social-care reform, apprenticeships, energy measures and more. Some of those ideas sound great. I've said that myself. But Britain's finances don't run on good intentions. WHERE IS THE MONEY COMING FROM? Burnham's first Budget isn't until October, so tonight I want to separate the announcements from the properly costed policies and ask whether we're being sold another enormous helping of JAM TOMORROW. BAN BALACLAVAS! SO WHAT ABOUT BURKHAS & VEILS? #JonGaunt #JonGauntTV #BanBalaclavas #Burkha #Veil #Nottingham #UKPolitics At last, a council appears to be talking some common sense about people covering their faces in our city centres. Nottingham is considering a ban on balaclavas after concerns were raised during a public consultation on measures designed to make the city safer. Council leader Neghat Khan has highlighted the sight of people riding around on e-bikes wearing balaclavas even in scorching summer temperatures and says people have a right to feel safe in their own city. I AGREE. If you're riding around a city centre in 32-degree heat with a balaclava covering your identity, why shouldn't the police and the public be suspicious? But here's the question I want YOU to debate with me LIVE: If we're going to ban balaclavas in the interests of public safety, why shouldn't the same rule apply to ALL face coverings in public places — including the niqab, burkha or other veils that conceal a person's identity? This isn't about attacking anybody's religion. It's about asking whether there should be ONE RULE FOR EVERYONE when it comes to identifying people in public spaces. If the argument is that covering your face can make other people feel unsafe, hinder identification or make policing more difficult, surely we have to be prepared to debate where the line should be drawn. Should religious exemptions exist? Should people be required to uncover their faces only in certain places or when requested by police? Or should Britain simply say that, apart from genuine medical, occupational or safety reasons, faces should remain visible in public? And there's a bigger question. WHY HAVE BALACLAVAS BECOME SO NORMAL? Masked riders on e-bikes. Shoplifting gangs. Street robbery. Phones being snatched. Ordinary people intimidated in their own town and city centres. Have we tolerated this for far too long? Nottingham says it wants to become the safest city in the country. GOOD. Let's see other councils show the same ambition. Berlin has just witnessed a deadly Islamist extremist attack targeting people gathered near its Pride celebrations. A van was driven into the crowd before further violence erupted, leaving one person dead and many more injured. Now, today in Paris, three women have been stabbed in broad daylight. The arrested suspect reportedly claimed that Allah had commanded him to carry out the attack, although the precise motive remains under investigation. How many times are we expected to watch scenes like these before mainstream politicians admit that Europe has a serious problem with Islamist extremism? They lecture ordinary people about diversity. They warn us about our language. They appear terrified of being accused of racism or Islamophobia. But where is their courage when women are being stabbed in the street or gay people are apparently targeted at Pride celebrations? It increasingly feels as though terrorist atrocities and extremist violence are being treated as acceptable collateral damage in the political establishment's pursuit of uncontrolled migration and multiculturalism at any cost. Let me make the distinction absolutely clear: A Muslim is a follower of a religion. An Islamist is a political extremist who wants religious ideology imposed upon society. Millions of peaceful, law-abiding Muslims reject terrorism and want to live freely in modern Western democracies. They must never be confused with radical Islamists who despise our freedoms, intimidate women, persecute gay people and seek to undermine liberal democracy. But refusing to make that distinction—and refusing to confront Islamist fascism—is not tolerance. It is cowardice. There is growing anger throughout Western Europe. Ordinary people can see what is happening, yet mainstream politicians continue to avoid the issue. They promise to control illegal immigration, defend our borders and protect the public—but nothing fundamentally changes. Why? Is it incompetence, cowardice—or do they simply lack the political will to solve it? And where is Andy Burnham? Why has a man who apparently wants to lead Britain had so little to say about illegal immigration, integration and the threat of Islamist extremism? When elected politicians refuse even to discuss the public's legitimate fears, they create a dangerous political vacuum. That vacuum will eventually be filled by extremists. Elon Musk is warning that Britain and Europe could be heading towards civil conflict. Is that prediction alarmist—or is it what happens when public anger is ignored for too long? Jon Gaunt asks: Have mainstream politicians abandoned their most basic responsibility—to protect their own citizens? This is not about attacking Muslims. It is about defending Muslims, Christians, Jews, atheists, women, gay people and every law-abiding citizen from a fascistic extremist ideology that has no place in a modern liberal democracy.
