The swift parrot is one of Australia's most critically endangered birds, with around 750 mature individuals breeding only in Lutruwita/Tasmania. In the first episode of Swift Parrots: Beating the Odds, we share our findings from monitoring nest outcomes on mainland Tasmania, backed by close to two decades of long-term population monitoring. Field observations, passive acoustic monitoring across nearly 150 sites, field cameras trained on active nests, glider surveys, health and diet analysis, and swift parrot mortality investigations show the species successfully nest and raise chicks wherever remaining habitat supports them, even in the presence of sugar gliders. While competition and predation from a range of species impact nest survival, ongoing habitat loss remains the decisive threat to the species’ future.
