Christian Zyp interviews Kerrie Long (former Executive Director & Lead Programmer for EIFF) about her 20 year tenure at the top of the Edmonton International Film Festival. Since EIFF is celebrating their 40th anniversary and Kerrie is a vital part of its storied history, she is the best person to look back at a large portion of the festival's history. She is still part of EIFF as a short film programmer, even though she has retired from her position as the head of the festival. Kerrie began her journey at EIFF in 2004, managing the daily duties required to produce a film festival – raising funds, grant writing, sponsorship, leading the production and programming teams, working with the EIFF volunteer Board of Directors, balancing the budget, the list goes on – all while multiplying life by the power of two, being a Mom, a Kookum, a Wife, and an Auntie. In her previous life, Kerrie was a writer and producer with ACCESS Television and a freelance Producer/Production Manager with many television credits. Christian Zyp interviews Vincent Brulotte (Production Coordinator & Programmer) from the Edmonton International Film Festival discuss the 4th and final edition of the EIFF ROAD TO 40 screenings. This time it's the EIFF's Road to 40: Parasite on Thursday, August 27, 2026 7:00 PM MDT at Landmark Cinemas 9 City Centre. PARASITE (2019) which was directed by Bong Joon Ho, revolves around a poor family of parents, son, and daughter, who struggle to survive in a society with the least luxuries. They were managing their lives, obviously criticizing the wealthy, until one day Choi-woo-sik, the son of the family received an opportunity to tutor a wealthy girl, through a friend’s invitation. This is when the whole comedy turns into a tragedy, for the time being, because of the human desire for luxury and the prevailing avarice for pampered commodities. The film is a critical portrayal of contemporary society, where the wealthy get the best while the poor suffer to the fullest. The way the poor family slowly fuses into the wealthy, pretending like they don’t know each other illustrates how crooked people can go to achieve their needs and desires. Christian Zyp interviews Andrea Werhun (co-writer/co-producer) and Nicole Bazuin (director/producer) about their documentary MODERN WHORE. Andrea Werhun and Nicole Bazuin challenge toxic misconceptions about sex work and sex workers with great audacity and high style. An impassioned and insightful rebuttal to the assumptions, misconceptions, and faulty representations that surround sex work and sex workers, Modern Whore may also be the most audacious and engaging movie ever made about the oldest profession. Successfully expanding on their 2020 short film and book of the same name, director Nicole Bazuin and subject and co-writer Andrea Werhun take viewers on a very eventful journey through Werhun’s experiences as an escort and exotic dancer, a career she began when she was a university student in Toronto. As Werhun recounts with great flair and frankness in the film’s stylized, fourth-wall-breaking re-enactments, there were many lessons to be learned and challenges to be faced, including the lack of protection from toxic clients and her own internalized versions of the shame that society associates with female pleasure and the sex industry. Though Modern Whore doesn’t flinch from portraying the darker and more disturbing aspects of sex work, its greater aim is to validate and celebrate the people who perform it, presenting them as fully complex individuals. The film also ventures beyond the scope of Werhun’s career to include experiences and perspectives that are different from her own as a white cisgendered woman, resulting in a wider view of the sex worker community. Avalon Fast’s CAMP is an out-of-body experience that brings you about as close as you can get to witchcraft and otherworldly spirits. After accidentally causing two fatal accidents, Emily spends the summer as a counsellor at a Christian grief camp in the woods in order to process her guilt. The film takes a sharp turn towards the surreal as she grows unexpectedly close with the other counsellors, participating in eccentric rituals which begin to unearth the roots of her trauma and push her towards catharsis, but not without consequence. Camp captures the raw emotions of guilt to create an ethereal and uncanny experience of growing up despite feeling frozen in time. Shot over the last five years, The Hockey Player follows Canadian-born defenseman Luke Prokop as he decides to become the first — and still only — professional athlete playing under contract to an NHL team to come out as gay. Growing up in Edmonton steeped in Canada’s tough, often homophobic hockey culture, and playing without gay role models throughout professional sports, Luke’s path to coming out of the closet has been neither easy nor obvious. The film charts Prokop’s personal journey against the backdrop of a professional hockey industry that has had, at best, an ambivalent relationship to diversity. As the film sensitively reveals, being publicly out certainly came as an earthquake to his family, especially his father Al, who as Luke’s mentor and sometime coach represents the most complex and moving relationship in the film.
