In this edition of the postgame BROCast, Dave recaps UCLA's 52-38 win over Purdue, including the offensive explosion and the defensive semi-implosion. I talked about the play of Nico Iamaleava, the incredible rushing attack, and the importance of having a couple of big-bodied receivers back and available for this game in Landon Ellis and Leland Smith. I also talked about what went wrong on defense, particularly at cornerback and in the pass rush, which allowed Purdue to pass for more than 370 yards. But I also touched on the opportunistic turnover creation, which helped keep this one from being a much closer game. Bruin Report Online is now at On3! Join BRO today and get 5 months for ONLY $1! The latest episode of the Bruin Report Online football recruiting podcast looks back on the first batch of UCLA football game visitors this season. Rivals recruiting analyst Brandon Huffman and BRO staff writer Tracy McDannald go over some of the key top targets who were in attendance for the Bruins' 28-10 win over San Diego State and some of the themes based on the reactions gathered over the past few days. The discussion turns to one of the most important visitors, 2028 four-star quarterback Josiah Boyd, who announced Wednesday that UCLA is in his top three along with Kentucky and Oregon. Plus, a focus on how the UCLA coaching staff goes beyond just head coach Bob Chesney and the full-time assistant position coaches, the importance in investing in upgrades and amenities like the new end zone club at the Rose Bowl, and more in the latest episode. In this edition of the BROCast, Dave and Tracy talk about their interview with Tim Harris, the sea change in UCLA athletics, and the Cal game. We talked extensively about the interview with the new CEO of Athletics, and how he echoed so much of what UCLA fans have been voicing for years now. We talked about the need for fans to make it out to the Rose Bowl and become active participants in the program now. We also talked about the alignment among the Chancellor, AD, and football coach now, and how important it is to take advantage of this window -- how this opportunity might not present itself again for a long time. This is the time to make UCLA football great. We then discussed the Cal game, and what impressed us most about UCLA's performance, including the run game, the defensive scheme, and much more. We previewed the San Diego State game as well, and talked about what we expect to see on the field. Bruin Report Online is now at On3! Join BRO today and get 5 months for ONLY $1! In this extensive, exclusive, wide-ranging hour-long interview with UCLA CEO and Director of Athletics Tim Harris, we talked with Harris about his early days on the job, his vision for UCLA, and his thoughts on how he can help bring the program back to major prominence. Harris talked about his desire to “burn the tarps” but put in a major call-to-action for UCLA fans to come back to the Rose Bowl and return to being season ticket holders, with the alignment in the Chancellor’s office, in the football program, and in the athletic department. He also opined that he believes UCLA is a Sleeping Giant, but that to get to Giant status it’ll require buy-in from all stakeholders. He also shared numerous stories and anecdotes, including personally calling a season-ticket holder having an issue with his account on the Monday holiday to get him squared away, as well as the sheer number of texts he received after he took the job — and how that blew him away about what UCLA meant to people. It’s the best interview we’ve ever done on BRO. Bruin Report Online is now at On3! Join BRO today and get 5 months for ONLY $1! Rivals recruiting analyst Brandon Huffman and BRO staff writer Tracy McDannald give an early glimpse at the list of names already confirmed to attend Saturday when UCLA hosts San Diego State at the Rose Bowl. One major 2028 visitor, in fact, confirmed his expected attendance just before recording the podcast. Plus, a look back at the recruiting implications of the Bruins' season-opening win over recent recruiting nemesis California and some of the feedback from recruits who were in Berkeley for the game. Then, a recap of what UCLA targets and commits looked like in recent games both attended and which high school games are on the schedule this week. Bruin Report Online is now at On3! In this edition of the postgame BROCast, Dave recaps UCLA's 45-24 win over California to open the Bob Chesney era. Dave breaks down what this game meant for UCLA fans, and the program, with the Bruins blowing out California and doing it with some very JMU-like elements. The main key, though, was UCLA showing fortitude and competitiveness in buckling down when it was 24-24 and outscoring Cal by 21 to end the game. He also talks about the offensive performance, including the excellent rushing attack and the one poor play at the end of the first half that nearly flipped the game in Cal's favor. He closes by talking about the defensive performance, including the excellent play from Sammy Omosigho, and the more questionable performance from the secondary. Bruin Report Online is now at On3! In this edition of the BROCast, Dave and Tracy extensively preview the UCLA vs. California game and then talk about the expected impact of Tim Harris as UCLA's new CEO of athletics. We broke down both sides of the matchup between UCLA football and Cal, emphasizing the advantage UCLA has on the offensive side, and the potential advantage Cal has with its own offense. But then we noted that the major difference between these two teams is the coaching difference, with UCLA having major continuity between head coach, offensive coordinator, and defensive coordinator, and Cal having first-time coaches at all three of those positions. Ultimately, we both leaned toward a narrow UCLA win. We then talked a bit more about the Martin Jarmond firing, and why it made sense to fire him at this juncture, given the financial mismanagement and his own lack of vision for getting UCLA out of this mess. We then discussed Tim Harris and why he's a good fit for the job. We also gave Julio Frenk his flowers for getting this done. Bruin Report Online is now at On3! In this special emergency edition of the BROCast, Dave and Tracy talk about Martin Jarmond being fired, and then bring on Ken Graiwer to talk about fundraising and more in the post-Jarmond era. As we reported earlier today, Jarmond was fired today after years of UCLA running in the red financially in athletics. Additionally, as Dave and Tracy talk about on the pod, Jarmond managed his athletic programs poorly, and also did a very poor job of meeting the aspirations of the fanbase. We talked about what the future could look like with Tim Harris as the new CEO of Athletics, and how the program will now be run with a much more business-oriented mindset. We then brought on Champion of Westwood head Ken Graiwer to talk about what this could mean for fundraising, roster-building, and the overall outlook for UCLA athletics (hint: it's very, very positive). In this edition of the BROCast, Dave and Tracy talk about what they learned from UCLA football media day, the latest on the Trent Hendrick recruitment, their interview with Mick Cronin, and the news that Tim Harris is evaluating UCLA athletics. We led off with a discussion of media day. It was the first time UCLA has done a media day in years, and it was a great event. We talked about some of the things we learned from talking to the players, and what we might glean from who was available. We then talked about Trent Hendrick, the former JMU linebacker, getting added to the TRO and presumably gaining eligibility for this coming season, and what factors might play into whether UCLA has a chance to get him. We switched gears to basketball to talk about our interview with Mick Cronin (Part 1 and Part 2), and some of our key takeaways from the hour and 20 minutes. Finally, we ended talking about Lakers exec Tim Harris being enlisted to evaluate UCLA Athletics by Julio Frenk, and what that could mean for the Athletic Department. In this edition of the BROCast, Dave and Tracy talk about what they've seen and heard from UCLA football so far in fall camp. We've seen four football practices so far in fall camp, and we went through all the different position groups and what we've seen and heard so far. We talked about the offense, and the areas we're most concerned (particularly on the offensive line and with Nico Iamaleava's deep accuracy) and the areas we feel best about (running back and receiver). We also talked about the defense, and the areas we're most concerned (defensive tackle, run defense generally) and the areas we feel best about (pass rush and the secondary). We then talked about some of the hype starting to build about UCLA, with a lot of people writing that people shouldn't be sleeping on UCLA. We talked about whether we think that's valid, and what it would take for UCLA to get to its ceiling. Bruin Report Online is now at On3! Join BRO today and get 5 months for ONLY $1! In this edition of the BROCast, Dave and Tracy talk about their impressions from UCLA's first fall camp practice and then discuss Nikola Kusturica's arrival on campus. We began by discussing what we saw out of fall practice No. 1. We talked extensively about the secondary changes, with Malik Hartford working as a first-string safety, Cole Martin playing nickel, and then Derrick Barksdale manning a cornerback position. We also talked about Brian Rowe playing outside receiver, with Mikey Matthews and Landon Ellis being the other two first-string receivers. We discussed the change on the offensive line, with Julian Armella working in with the ones at guard over Carter Sweazie. Then we shifted gears to talk about basketball, including Nikola Kusturica's expected arrival on campus next week. We also discussed the possibility of the basketball team adding more players, with the recent eligibility rulings and cases. Bruin Report Online is now at On3! In this edition of the BROCast, Dave and Tracy recap what we learned at Media Days and then preview the UCLA defense for fall camp. I attended Media Days and gave a brief synopsis of the format and what we learned from Bob Chesney and the players. We also talked about Media Day in general and how it's evolved from an availability to something like an event that's covered like a game. We then continued our preview of the UCLA football team for fall camp, this time breaking down the defense. We talked about the defensive line, where UCLA is pretty thin and uncertain at defensive tackle, but more robust on the edge, at both the bigger defensive end role and at the outside linebacker/JACK position. Moving backward, we talked about the linebacker group also being a little thin and uncertain, though we feel better about it now that Sammy Omosigho looks like a player. Still, if there's an issue on defense, we'd bet it'll be defending the run up the middle between the uncertainty at defensive tackle and at linebacker. Finally, we talked about the secondary, where UCLA has good, proven starters at several spots, but again a bit of uncertainty because of Scooter Jackson's status. If Jackson is available to play this year, we'd put this secondary up there among the upper echelon of the Big Ten. As it stands, though, we still think it's a good group. In this edition of the BROCast, Dave and Tracy begin their preview of fall camp with an in-depth look at the offense heading into August. We talked about the quarterbacks, and how we see the backup quarterback competition between Madden Iamaleava and Ty Dieffenbach shaking out. We also talked about the quality of the overall depth chart at the position. We then discussed the running backs, which might be the deepest position group on the team in 2026. The starter, though, is still an open question, with three viable contenders, which we discuss. We moved onto the receiving corps, where we are excited to watch Leland Smith, who is hopefully healthy for fall camp after being dinged up in the spring. We also talked about Brian Rowe and Landon Ellis, who will be the other two in the starting lineup. But we also touched on the rest of the depth chart, where UCLA probably has six to seven guys who are obviously playable at this level. We touched on the tight end group, where we expect Josh Phifer to start, and then we expect a competition between Brayden Loftin and Noah Fox-Flores as the pass-catcher in the group. We wrapped up with the offensive line, where there are still question marks at several spots. We're pretty confident in Riley Robell at center, and that two of Eugene Brooks, Carter Sweazie, and Julian Armella will start at the guard spots, and that some combination of Jordan Davis, Hall Schmidt, and JD Dean will start at tackle, but who exactly, and how well they'll play, is a big question.
