  1. Dubai's Two Year Deadline for Agentic AI, with Jeff Ross

    Aug 18, 202639 min

Dubai has given its entire private sector a two year deadline to adopt agentic AI. No pilot phase. Meanwhile, the honest answer to "what does your AI tool actually do for you" can often be a shrug, or three minutes of enthusiasm that never lands on anything specific. That is where this conversation with Jeff Ross lives. Jeff has spent 25 years being sent into businesses that had come loose, hotel groups, retail chains and service organisations across three continents, with stints at Starwood, St Regis, Swissôtel, TUI and Apple Retail. These days he runs Nexus Point Project Management from Dubai, helping owners across the UAE, the GCC and Southeast Asia get the important things done once growth has outpaced what the founder can hold in their own head. We get into: Why Dubai's two year agentic AI mandate is different from every AI strategy document sitting in a drawer elsewhere The one line test Jeff uses on leaders: if you can't explain how your AI tool helps you, you're not ready for anything bigger What a post-acquisition integration between two of the biggest players in a Swiss market could look like with today's tools, instead of the manual pattern recognition it took at the time Why employees quietly resist big AI rollouts long before the rollout is even announced What Jeff still believes only a human leader can do, whatever the tools end up being capable of And a story about self-driving taxis, his 14 year old son, and why he trusts the cars more than some of the human drivers The mandate is arriving whether leaders are ready or not. Readiness starts with being able to explain, in one sentence, what the tool in front of you is actually for. 2. Every Company Needs Someone With AI in Their Job Title, with Jim Spignardo

    Aug 11, 202633 min

Ask most businesses who actually owns AI and you get a pause, followed by a name and a caveat about how it isn't really that person's job. Jim Spignardo reckons that has about twelve months left to run. Jim's the Director of Cloud Strategy and AI Enablement at ProArch, a global IT services and consulting firm, and he's the person doing that job inside his company. He reports an assisted value figure of AI to his executive team every single month. It's gone from a few thousand dollars a month to somewhere around $75,000, across 160 licensed users in a company of roughly 400. In this episode we get into: Why the twelve month clock, and why that person doesn't have to be a new hire or a full time role How he builds the baseline that makes a monthly ROI number possible, when nobody has ever measured what the work costs today Why governance is there to protect the organisation and not shackle it, and who belongs on the council The one toggle in agent builder that Jim tells everyone to switch off before anything else Why archived and untouched data quietly drags down the quality of what Copilot hands back What happened at ProArch when free Cowork credits became paid ones. He uses the word "riot" Jim's book, The AI Turning Point, came out in March and there's a second one on the way. Share this with whoever in your business has quietly been doing the AI job without the title. 3. Open Weight, Closed Weight or Open Source: What Every Leader Actually Needs to Know

    Aug 4, 202614 min

What happens to your AI-powered workflows if the model you built them on disappears overnight? I'm on my own this week, catching leaders up on what actually happened in AI through July, because it was a genuinely packed month even by this year's standards. In this episode: Why Fable 5 vanishing for two and a half weeks in June still matters even though it's back Satya Nadella's "reverse information paradox," and what he says every prompt is quietly costing you There's closed weight, and then open weight, and then full open source. All three explained with one car analogy China's most crowded month yet for open weight releases, and the distillation row that followed A letter fifty companies signed on open weight regulation this week. Anthropic wasn't one of them Whether you're trying to work out what "open weight" actually means or you're just wondering what your backup plan is if your AI vendor gets cut off tomorrow, this one's for you. 4. AI Can't Write Your Story, But It Can Find It, with Rob D. Willis

    Jul 28, 202633 min

AI can generate a thousand polished slides that say absolutely nothing. So what actually makes a leader worth listening to now? Rob D. Willis went from producing top 10 records in Germany to coaching executives on narrative. He calls himself a strategic story producer, and the parallel holds up. An artist used to walk into his studio with an eight minute song and no chorus, and his job was working out what they were really trying to say. He does the same thing now for leaders at HelloFresh, Moneybox, Salesforce, Babbel and Pfizer. Rob also hosts the fantastic Chief Story Officer podcast. In this episode we get into: The pronoun pattern in Andy Burnham's first speech outside Number 10 How to be strategic by answering Kendall Haven's three questions Why the investor deck grows from eight slides to forty, and what that says about being too close to your own idea What AI is genuinely good at for helping leaders with stories Three great things leaders can take away to become better storytellers And a scene from Margin Call that does more for executive communication than most presentation training Key takeaway: the stories you need are already sitting inside your organisation. AI is unusually good at surfacing them but working out which ones matter is still your job. 5. Honey, I Blew Up the AI Bill

    Jul 20, 202616 min

In this solo episode, I break down how AI token pricing actually works, and why it's about to matter for a lot more people than it used to. I get into: ✳️ Why input tokens and output tokens are priced completely differently ✳️ What my own email triage agent cost the first day the meter switched on, and what that scales to ✳️ The Jevons paradox: token prices have fallen roughly tenfold in a year, and the bills have gone up anyway ✳️ A KPMG stat that a third of UK leaders admit they don't really understand how their AI costs are structured ✳️ Why running every task on the frontier model instead of a cheaper one can cost five times as much for no real gain ✳️ How to set a budget for something you can't price until you've run it once ✳️ And when self-hosting a model stops being overkill and starts being the sensible option Useful whether you're piloting your first AI agent or already running several across a team. 6. AI Multiplies Whatever Environment It Lands In, with Greg Hoffman

    Jul 13, 202642 min

Everyone's reading the same headline... Billions poured into AI, and most CEOs still can't point to the productivity gains. Greg Hoffman reads it differently. In this episode, Greg Hoffman (Chief Legal Officer turned Chief Transformation Officer, now author of the leadership parable Performance Through People ) joins Martin to work through why AI keeps amplifying the wrong things. And the through line: AI is a multiplier, and it multiplies whatever environment it lands in. Good leadership or bad, it scales both. We get into: ✳️ Greg's PTP methodology and the background for his new book ✳️ Why we're sitting in the valley of a J curve, and how it echoes the dot com adoption dip ✳️ The thesis that clarity plus capability equals trust, and why trust is what actually lets a team move fast ✳️ Empowerment as a dial, not a lever ✳️ Lauren, the AI coach Greg built into his PTP programme, and why good coaching no longer has to stay locked to the executive floor ✳️ The one thing he's convinced AI will never replace ✳️ And why he now walks round his house talking to Claude through his AirPods Whether you're rolling AI across a team or still working out where it actually helps, this one's worth your time. 7. Why AI Adoption Lives or Dies on the People, Not the Tech, with Paula Carter

    Jul 6, 202644 min

When Paula Carter took over one national rollout, adoption was sitting at 42%. By the time she left, it was 98%. The technology never changed. Paula has spent over two decades leading change at scale, from digitalising the NHS Spine to rolling out near real-time school attendance data across the UK, alongside global roles at BT and change frameworks inside the Ministry of Justice. She now runs Inicio Success, working with leaders on people-centred change that actually sticks. In this episode we get into: ✳️ Why AI adoption tends to live or die on the people work, long before the tool goes anywhere near a desk ✳️ Her what, why, how and when starting point, and why the "how" has to be built with the people doing the job today ✳️ The bus analogy she uses for change: willing passengers versus a coach full of people who feel dragged aboard ✳️ Why resistance usually turns up as "I'm too busy", and a kinder way to handle it ✳️ The three AI tools she actually reaches for, plus the odd brand test she runs on herself using her own photo ✳️ One quirky detective-drama habit that tells you more about change management than it has any right to Whether you're about to start an AI programme or trying to rescue one that's stalled, this one's worth your time. 8. Where Do You See Yourself in Five Years?

    Jun 29, 202623 min

"Where do you see yourself in five years?" used to be an easy interview question. With the AI job-apocalypse headlines flying around, it's a much harder one to answer now. This week is a solo one. No guest. I'm sharing a talk I gave last week on the gap between what the media says AI is doing to jobs and what the data actually shows on the ground. I get into: ✳️ Why paying for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Copilot puts you in the top 0.8% of the world, and how early that means we still are ✳️ The OpenAI and Anthropic numbers showing AI could handle most finance tasks while only about a third of that shows up in real use ✳️ What's really behind the headline tech layoffs, and why it isn't AI productivity ✳️ The 63% drop in junior finance hiring across Europe, and the quiet damage that does to your 2036 leadership pipeline ✳️ A five-minute aged-debtor report I built live in Claude, and the one question that beats "where can we cut?" 9. Your AI Resume Is Already Written. Did You Write It? With Jason Barnard

    Jun 22, 202642 min

There's already an AI resume written about you. The only question is whether you wrote it, or the machine guessed. Jason Barnard has spent 25 years studying how algorithms decide what to say about people and brands. He founded Kalicube, coined the term Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) back in 2017, and turns out he's a fellow Yorkshireman who used to live just down the road from me. He might even know my mum. In this episode Jason and I get into: ✳️ Why Google and AI now act as an "untrained sales force", and how most businesses have them quietly selling for the competition ✳️ The one-page website fix he can explain in 35 seconds (he timed it) ✳️ The $100,000 deal he lost because Google decided he was a cartoon maker ✳️ How Gemini recommended him to Google for a speaking slot and made the sale on his behalf ✳️ Why sorting your data is the one job AI will help with but flatly won't do for you ✳️ And the J-curve. Named after himself. Of course. Whether you're working out where to start with AI or you're uneasy about what the machines are already saying about you, this one's worth your time. 10. What AI Actually Demands From Leaders, with Cristina Gurguta

    Jun 15, 202639 min

AI doesn't remove the need for leadership. It just raises the standard required." This week I sat down with Cristina Gurguta. Director of Research and Innovation and Associate Partner at INSUS Industrial Sustainable Solutions, and the voice behind the Baby Data Scientist platform. Cristina started her career as a police officer investigating fraud. Now she investigates data. The overlap, she says, is bigger than you'd expect. In this episode we get into: ✳️ Why most AI pilots fail and technology is almost never the reason ✳️ Her kill switch protocol, built to shut down AI proposals before they cost the organisation anything ✳️ How she ran an 8-session AI accelerator across 1,500 people, from beginners with no technical background through to data scientists ✳️ Why the AI orchestrator role that's emerging doesn't require writing a single line of code ✳️ What the 4,000 Weeks question really means now that AI is giving back hours each week ✳️ A book recommendation involving vampires. Mark Schaefer, marketing futurist, author of 12 books and the man behind the blog GROW, joins Martin Wheatley to talk about the part of the AI conversation almost nobody is having: not how we use AI, but how our customers are starting to. We get into: ✳️ Why protecting your brand's DNA matters more as AI spreads, and how "humanity as a luxury" could become a genuine point of difference ✳️ Cognitive offloading vs cognitive surrender, and the MIT study where 73% of people accepted a wrong answer from AI ✳️ The single thing Mark thinks leaders get most wrong (it involves trying to prove the ROI of a twenty-pound subscription) ✳️ Why smaller businesses may be better placed to get this right than the giants ✳️ Markbot, the free AI clone Mark built from 16 years of his own work Whether you're weighing up where AI fits in your business or trying to bring your people with you rather than past them, there's plenty here to sit with. 12. Connection Intelligence: Leading Across Generations and AI, with Jenny Ainsworth

    Jun 1, 202637 min

When AI can outpace what you know, what's actually left for a leader to do? Jenny Ainsworth has a stark answer, and a useful one. Jenny is a bestselling author and founder of the Connection Intelligence methodology. Before that, she was Disney's European training manager, with 20+ years working with leadership teams across sectors from finance to pharmaceuticals. Her new book Connection Intelligence lands in a workplace now juggling four generations and an AI tool for every task. In this conversation we get into: Why leaders who define themselves by what they know are the most exposed when AI lands What Connection Intelligence is, and why Jenny puts it in the middle of a Venn diagram rather than next to IQ, EQ and DQ Jack Dorsey's Block cutting 4,000 management roles, and what quietly gets lost when you do that A "start, stop, continue" question that builds psychological safety without making a song and dance of it Using a one to ten confidence scale to surface where a team really is with AI, without anyone getting shamed The three connections Jenny argues every employee needs in order to do their best work at work The thread running throughout: tech and humanity aren't opposites. The leaders who get that will be in a very different place to the ones who don't. ⭐️ Make sure to grab a copy of Jenny's book today: "Connection Intelligence" by Jenny Ainsworth ⭐️ Connect with Jenny: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jennyainsworth Website: https://jennyainsworth.com Timestamps: 00:00 Welcome to the Show! 01:43 Introduction to Jenny Ainsworth 03:04 The Evolution of Leadership and Connection Intelligence 05:27 Understanding Connection Intelligence 07:08 Generational Perspectives in the Workplace 09:59 Flexibility in Leadership Styles 12:52 AI's Impact on Leadership 16:55 Balancing Technology and Humanity in Leadership 18:11 Building Psychological Safety in Hybrid Teams 20:58 Building Psychological Safety in Teams 25:07 The Importance of Connection in the Workplace 28:49 Leveraging AI for Enhanced Productivity 31:54 Key Takeaways for Effective Leadership Get your copy of the Multiply Method ✖️ It's a FREE roadmap walking you through how to multiply the capabilities of your people and your business with AI. www.theaileaderlab.com/roadmap Connect with Martin: Websites: www.theaileaderlab.com LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/martinjwheatley Subscribe to The Frontier Leader Show wherever you listen to podcasts.

  13. Leaders Aren't Ready for What AI Is Bringing, with Pierre Naggar

    May 25, 202644 min

"Leaders are not ready for what AI is going to bring." That's how Pierre Naggar opens this conversation. And it lands hard. Pierre Naggar is the founder of BrightPro and spent almost 30 years in digital marketing and advertising tech before moving into AI automation. In this episode, we get into what's actually going on inside companies trying to adopt AI, and where it tends to come unstuck. We cover: Why most CEOs still hand AI to the CTO or the IT team, and what that quietly costs them The case for a Chief AI Officer AI readiness and data readiness, including projects Pierre walked away from because the data wasn't there yet The cost trap when a prototype moves into production, and why model drift quietly eats your ROI AI is coming for the jobs you should never have been doing in the first place The important bit: AI adoption isn't transformation. Pilots and Copilot rollouts don't count for much until the operating model itself starts to shift. If you're a senior leader trying to work out whether your AI activity is actually going somewhere, this one's worth a listen. 14. AI Agents in Business: Inside Bentley Lewis with Lewis Maleh

    May 18, 202643 min

Most teams are using AI now. Nothing in the actual business has changed. If that sounds familiar, this episode is for you. Lewis Maleh runs Bentley Lewis, a global executive search firm with team members in London, the US, Europe, Tokyo and Mumbai. He's one of the few founders I've spoken to who's moved past "the team uses ChatGPT" and built AI properly into how the firm operates. Which is a different conversation entirely. A few things you'll hear: ✅ Meet Nina, the AI agent on Lewis's team. ✅ What happens when you send your AI avatar to an interview ✅ How he is now building internal apps without writing a line of code, using voice-to-text and Claude ✅ The split in the recruitment market between AI-screened entry level and 100% sourced executive search ✅ How his team has learnt and grown together with technology I came away from this one thinking about the difference between having AI in your business and AI being in the business . They're not the same thing, and the gap between them is where most firms are stuck. 15. AI for Leadership: You can't Multiply by Zero, with Bob Gentle

    May 11, 202647 min

AI gives leaders an amplifier they've never had before. The trouble is, an amplifier amplifies whatever's already there. If the messaging is unclear, AI just makes the unclear bit louder. That's where this conversation with Bob Gentle starts, and it's where most of the AI for leadership conversation should probably start too. Bob is a personal brand strategist with almost 20 years in digital marketing. He works with CEOs, boards and senior leaders on building authority that actually converts, and he hosts Building Your Leader Brand, which sits in the global top 2% on ListenNotes. He's also one of the more interesting practitioners I've come across on using AI without losing the human signal. In this episode we get into: ✅ Why courage used to be the currency of thought leadership, and what's quietly replacing it now AI has made content production almost free - ✅ Bob's "you can't multiply by zero" rule, and how it lined up with the AI Maths Framework I've been working on (Division, Subtraction, Addition, Multiplication) ✅ The AI-augmented content workflow Bob has built using Notion, Zapier, Poppy and Claude that protects his voice rather than erasing it ✅ Why discernment is becoming the new premium skill for leaders ✅ The 80% imposter syndrome stat that should probably change how you talk to your senior team ✅ Why your website is almost certainly built for the wrong 1% of visitors ✅ And a CIA quantum entanglement story. Yes, really. The takeaway I came away with: AI is an amplifier. It is not a substitute for the work of being clear about who you are and who you're for. 16. The Frontier Brief - 8th May 2026

    May 8, 202615 min

Three pieces of AI news from the past month. One uncomfortable pattern underneath all of them. The Frontier Brief is the monthly solo episode of The Frontier Leader Show, where Martin Wheatley filters what's happening in AI down to what actually matters for leaders running real businesses. This month Martin covers: ✳️ OpenAI's AI Jobs Transition Framework, and the gap between theoretical and realised AI exposure across 150 million US jobs ✳️ Anthropic's Economic Index data on the widening gap between practised and casual Claude users ✳️ A Chinese court ruling that signals where the legal line is being drawn on AI-driven redundancy These three signals point at the same problem from different angles. Martin borrows the OpenAI term of "capability overhang": the space between what AI can do and what your people are actually getting out of it. Most businesses have one but few are closing it on purpose. A practical filter on AI adoption, leadership decisions, and where senior leaders should be focusing their attention right now. Useful for CEOs, MDs, and operators of SME businesses navigating AI strategy. 17. The 70-Person Team Running a One-Person Business, with Wendy Kier

    May 4, 202638 min

What if the executive team you've always needed was already sitting in ChatGPT? Wendy Kier, founder of Empower AI, runs her business with 70 custom GPT agents. Twelve of them are strategic partners: a CEO called Lucas, a business coach, a marketing manager, a sales mentor. The rest handle task work like social media, newsletters, and client reports. It's the team most solo founders could never afford to hire, built inside one platform. Wendy joins Martin to explain her methodology, why she's stayed in ChatGPT while everyone else has been chasing Claude, and why she thinks vibe-coded agents aren't safe to sell commercially. They get into: ✅ Building agents from a proper job description, with a 24-step master document and lock-in guardrails ✅ Why the CEO agent is Wendy's favourite, and how solo founders use it for weekly founder reports ✅ The AI Book Companion: turning a book into an agent so readers have an ongoing conversation with the author's thinking between coaching or therapy sessions ✅ Using Projects as a "filing cabinet" rather than a prompted container, and why that makes ChatGPT smarter ✅ The discipline of staying in your lane when every week a new model claims to be in the lead 🔑 Key takeaway: depth beats novelty. The operators getting real leverage from AI aren't the ones testing every tool. They're the ones building properly around the one that works for them. 18. Scaling a Fintech Where AI Is Part of the Operating Fabric, with Julian Schoemig

    Apr 27, 202631 min

What happens when a founder can interrogate the collective knowledge of his entire company before walking into a customer meeting, without interrupting a single team member? Julian Schoemig, CEO and co-founder of Diesta , joins Martin Wheatley to talk about building a fintech platform at the awkward intersection of insurance and payments, and what scaling a 25-person startup actually looks like when AI is part of the operating fabric. They get into: ✅ Why vibe coding gets you 80% of the way there, and why the final 20% is where leadership earns its keep ✅ How Julian uses internal MCP servers to prep for client conversations and cross-check his own thinking against the team's documented reasoning ✅ The hidden cost of interruption in hybrid teams, and how AI tooling protects deep work ✅ Three waves of insurtech in 25 years, and why the cycles are now compressing into five ✅ Where Diesta is heading next on payment initiation, and what "Rec and Roll" actually means 🔑 Key takeaway: AI can write 80% of the code, the design, and the first draft of almost anything. The 20% that's left is where judgement lives, and it's the part that cannot be delegated. If you're leading a scaling business and trying to work out where AI sharpens judgement rather than just speed, this one's worth the thirty minutes. 19. Why Your AI Pilot Will Fail Before You Start It, with Neil Alderson

    Apr 27, 202643 min

Most AI pilots don't survive past the proof-of-concept stage. So is the problem the technology or what's underneath it? Neil Alderson (independent advisor to CFOs and finance leaders, 25+ years in finance and transformation) joins Martin to work through what actually has to be true before AI starts delivering returns inside a finance or operations function. We get into: ✅ Why "speed to value" pressure is causing leaders to skip the groundwork that makes transformation stick ✅ The difference between real transformation and "just a bit of change happening" ✅ How dirty data and broken processes create noise that derails programme governance ✅ Where AI tools like Copilot and Claude Cowork genuinely help and where the human element still comes at a premium ✅ Why trust and authentic connection will matter more, not less, as AI scales 🔑 Key takeaway: AI is an enabler, not the answer. Get the data and the decisions right, then let the tools multiply them. 20. The AI Leadership Wake-Up Call, with Iain Morrison

    Apr 27, 202641 min

Most AI consultants will tell you "AI won't take your job." Iain Morrison won't. He thinks that answer is too comfortable, and the real picture is more nuanced, more honest, and ultimately more useful. Iain is the founder of Enlightened People, an AI-enabled HR consultancy, a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD, and an ICF accredited coach. He helps HR teams and SME leadership groups figure out what AI actually means for their people. In this episode, Martin and Iain dig into why so many AI rollouts fail before they start, what "shadow AI" is doing to your data security right now, and why the organisations treating AI as an opportunity tool will be the ones that grow. You'll hear about: ✅ The wild maturity gap ✅ Why banning AI outright creates more risk than it prevents ✅ "AI washing" and why some big redundancy headlines have very little to do with AI ✅ Why your expertise is the irreplaceable last 20% that AI can't cover ✅ How entry-level careers are about to look very different ✅ Three practical starting points: be curious, pick one model and stick with it, and two books worth your time 🔑 Key takeaway: AI will reshape workforces. But leaders who empower their people with these tools, rather than strip headcount to the bone, will build more innovative organisations that grow faster.
