American Monster: The Trial Of Caleb Flynn

Two different searches were aimed at the same basic question in the Caleb Flynn case: was there evidence outside the home supporting the presence of the burglar described by the defense? Deputy David Laycox of the Preble County Sheriff’s Department testified about searching the property with K9 Hayes, a tracking police dog. Laycox said Hayes located a strong scent near the garage. He testified that the dog tried to enter the garage, where the scent appeared stronger, before conducting a perimeter search around the property. According to Laycox, Hayes did not locate a scent trail showing a person leaving the scene. The dog instead returned to the area where the strong scent had been detected and again tried to enter the home. Laycox called the result a negative alert for a suspect leaving the property. Cross-examination prevented that testimony from becoming more definitive than the search actually allowed. Laycox acknowledged that Hayes failing to detect an outgoing scent did not eliminate the possibility that someone left the house. FBI Agent Michael Tom testified about a broader canvass of the neighborhood. Tom said he questioned neighbors and other people in the area about whether they had seen a suspected burglar. He also looked for doorbell-camera footage that might have captured or helped identify a person outside the Flynn home. Tom testified that nothing was reported. The significance of both witnesses comes from the central disagreement in Caleb Flynn’s trial. Prosecutors allege Caleb killed his wife, Ashley Flynn, and staged their home to appear as though a burglary had occurred. Caleb has pleaded not guilty, and his defense maintains that the home invasion was real. Laycox and Tom described searches that did not produce an outgoing K9 trail or a reported sighting. Day 1 testimony moved from the bedroom where Ashley Flynn was found to a drone flying above the property later that morning. Together, Alex Huels and Hunter Bradburn gave jurors two very different pieces of the timeline. Alex Huels, a Tipp City firefighter and paramedic, testified that he entered the bedroom after arriving at the Flynn home. Huels described Ashley lying on her left side in bed with a towel covering her head. He testified that he removed the towel and observed a penetrating wound to her head. Huels said Ashley was not moving. He checked for a pulse and found none. According to his testimony, he completed his assessment at approximately 2:42 a.m. Tipp City Police Officer Hunter Bradburn then testified about his role as a drone pilot. Bradburn said he deployed the drone to photograph the Flynn property. On cross-examination, he testified that the deployment began at approximately 3:56 a.m., which he described as more than an hour and a half after the incident. Bradburn told jurors that the only moving heat signatures he observed while the drone was operating were animals. That qualification on timing is significant because the prosecution and defense disagree sharply about what happened at the Flynn home. The drone provides a view of the property at 3:56 a.m.; Bradburn’s testimony does not establish what may have been present there earlier. Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty to charges including aggravated murder in the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn. Prosecutors allege Caleb staged the home to resemble a burglary after killing Ashley. Jurors in the Caleb Flynn trial saw body-camera footage from Officer Alexandra Giampapa as she described clearing portions of the Flynn home — including a garage where officers discovered a door standing open to the outside. Giampapa, with the Tipp City Police Department, testified about her role in the initial response on February 16, 2026. She told jurors that she and another officer cleared the garage. During that process, they found a door in the garage that was open to the exterior. Giampapa then continued clearing the residence and checked on the minor children who were still inside the home. EMS personnel subsequently arrived. Ashley Flynn’s mother, Jill, took the children away from the residence as police continued handling the scene. The prosecution also played Giampapa’s body-camera recording in court. That gave jurors an opportunity to see part of the initial police response and the areas Giampapa was describing from the witness stand. The first officer inside the Flynn home testified that Caleb Flynn was not treated as a suspect when police arrived. But the jury also learned that the officer’s body camera did not capture his first conversation with Caleb. The prosecution began its witness testimony with Beth Hull, director of the Miami County Communication Center. Hull testified that she retrieved the records and audio surrounding Caleb’s February 16, 2026 call for help. The records placed that 911 call at approximately 2:31 a.m., and prosecutors played the recording for jurors. Sgt. Corey Rismiller of Tipp City Police testified that he arrived about five minutes later, at 2:36 a.m. Rismiller said he searched the house for anyone else and found no one. He then entered the bedroom where Ashley Flynn was located. Rismiller testified that Ashley had significant trauma around her head and was deceased. He secured the house, advised detectives of the death, and EMS personnel then entered the scene. He also testified that Caleb was never treated as a suspect by him during that initial response. Cross-examination turned to Rismiller’s experience and his body camera. He testified that he had handled one prior homicide in Tipp City, in the early 2000s. More importantly for the record jurors now have, Rismiller said his body camera did not automatically activate. He manually turned it on after realizing it was not recording. His first conversation with Caleb therefore exists only through testimony, not body-camera footage. That missing recording does not establish what was said in either direction. It does mean jurors will have to evaluate Rismiller’s account without video of that initial exchange. Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty. Caleb Flynn stood on worship stages and sang about grace. Prosecutors say he walked into his wife's bedroom with a 9mm handgun and took hers. Ashley Flynn — a thirty-seven-year-old mother, middle school volleyball coach, and educator in Tipp City, Ohio — was found dead in the early morning hours of February 16, 2026, inside the home she shared with her husband and their two young daughters. She had been shot in the head. The girls were asleep down the hall. At 2:31 a.m., Caleb Flynn called 911 and reported a burglary. He told the dispatcher the garage door was wide open. Someone broke in, he said. Someone shot his wife. But according to investigators, the scene told a different story — one that didn't hold together. Authorities allege the break-in was staged, and that it was Caleb who pulled the trigger. Three days later, he was arrested. A Miami County grand jury has since indicted him on eleven charges: aggravated murder, three counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault, three counts of tampering with evidence, and two misdemeanor counts of intimidation of a witness. He has pleaded not guilty to all counts. His bond sits at three and a half million dollars. There will be no plea deal — the prosecution's only offer is for Flynn to plead guilty as charged. His jury trial is set to begin May 4 before Judge Jeannine Pratt. The defense, led by attorney L. Patrick Mulligan, has maintained that the investigation was rushed and that the state's case rests on assumptions, not evidence. The defense has filed a motion requesting the jury be taken to the Flynn home to assess the scene for themselves. Meanwhile, the state has issued subpoenas to social media companies, banks, insurance providers, and software corporations — and is still waiting on responses from some of them.
