Algorithmically Incorrect Hockey

Sean and Robert are both in Detroit for the prospect tournament, so they decided to sit down for a Monday bonus episode and discuss what they've seen, heard, and eaten after two days of NHL-adjacent hockey. We open by discussing why Scott White's name has been mentioned in relation to the Detroit GM search, and why he also loves what he does in Dallas. From there, we discuss everything from what prospect tournaments mean now vs. what they did in Traverse City, and why a shorter preseason still allows time for some team-bonding trips. Sean and Robert are gearing up for the four-team prospect tournament in Detroit this weekend, which means a lot of Talking Shop. Today's episode begins with what the guys are anticipating about the return of actual hockey, then it goes off into the weeds of NHL media meals, Sean's history as a movie theatre employee/spy, and the only job Robert has ever been fired from (so far). Sean and Robert are feeling old today. They yell about the Cloud, or at least about how the Cloud seems to work sometimes. After some producer notes, the show starts (7:10) with a clip and some analysis from Bonus Episode with David Carle, and what the guys' takeaways were from the very good conversation. The back half of the show (30:40) is all about how the Stars and five other NHL teams are moving to Amazon Prime for local broadcasts. The guys discuss what we know about how Victory+ collapsed, who's to blame, and what we still don't know about the ad-supported model following the death of premium RSN revenue.

Sean and Robert chat with David Carle, whom you might know as the head coach at the University of Denver, a three-time national champion, or the two-time gold medal-winning coach of the Team USA World Juniors team. He is all of those things. Today's bonus episode is wide-ranging conversation with Carle about why he'd rather talk about fishing in Alaska, how he works with his assistant coaches, why he still takes calls from NHL teams despite being happy at Denver, how he protects his college hockey team's culture in the age of NIL and revenue sharing, and the moment he knew Zeev Buium was going to be a special player.

Sean is back from vacation with a brand-new lightsaber. Robert is still talking about kindergarten. The guys are joined by Andrew Brewer (10:20), the new GM and Chief of Staff for the University of Michigan Men's Ice Hockey Team, to discuss everything from Disney theme parks to using AI properly. Brewer also talks about the impact of NIL money on college hockey, how he went from the NHL to NCAA, and what made coaching the 2016 World Cup of Hockey such a unique experience. Sean and Robert are here to regale you with some tales from days of yore. But first (6:15), a discussion about new buildings in Calgary and Dallas, what Sean and Robert would love to see in the next wave of NHL arenas, and what makes those Montreal hot dogs so ridiculously delicious. After that, it's story time with Sean and Robert (27:29). So sit back and listen to how many different strangers Sean has been in a car with, what it's like to float in the water and watch a boat captain staring at you with no intention of rescue in his heart.

Robert and Sean are in the same place at the same time, and so is special guest Gavin Spittle! The guys begin the show (1:45) by talking about the Spits and Suds meetup from Tuesday night. Sean signed a lot of books, and everyone shook a lot of hands. Gavin then goes into how he started a podcast and grew it into what it's become today. The guys then discuss (30:33) how the scouting world operates over the course of an NHL season, and how the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup kicks it all off. Before wrapping up (43:31), we also get into the various NHL teams that use independent search firms to recruit talent, what they can and can't do, and how exactly Seattle has wound up in the place they're at.

Sean is getting ready to fly all over the place. Robert is in Texas, waiting. First (4:55), we go through some basic travel tips that you all can enjoy, including Sean's Moto GP-inspired philosophy. Next (25:23), the guys discuss Columbus's decision to axe another media member in Jeff Svoboda, and that leads into a longer conversation (39:31) about how profitable sports ownership is, and why the Dodgers (or the Yankees, or the Rangers) are not the problem other owners would like you to think they are. We wrap things up (51:30) by going through a few recommended books for summer reading, including Sprawlball, Home Ice, and more.

It's Thurday, which is this week's Wednesday. Neither Sean nor Robert has seen Tenet, but that won't stop them from talking about it. After some banter, the guys begain (7:15) by discussing Dylan Larkin's birthday, which segues into a discussion about Jim Nill, Detroit's culture, and how it was (or wasn't) built during the Ken Holland/Steve Yzerman era. After that, (20:22) the guys dig into Columbus's decision to get rid of their radio broadcast and simulcast the TV side. It turns out that this is part of a *much* bigger discussion, and you can bet your sweet bippy that Algorithmically Incorrect Hockey is going to spend the next 30 minutes talking about it, including digressions about Sean and Robert's experiences at former employers.

Sean and Robert have once again scheduled breaking news to happen right before the show. This time, it's Jason Robertson's new contract. First, (4:01) the guys dig into Jason Robertson's one-year deal with Dallas, its implications for his next deal, and what choices Dallas has to make now. In the back half of the program (37:45), Sean talks about a movie you Oughta See, as well as other movies (both new and from 1981). We wrap up with some thoughts about how to watch sports when you already know the outcome, and the near-miraculous journey of a very good dog.

Sean and Robert suddenly have much more to talk about than they'd planned, so they do that. First (5:45), the guys discuss the news that the Texas Rangers have abruptly left Victory+ for a new streaming platform, why the move might have happened when it did, and what it means for teams like the Dallas Stars. Ryan Hana of the Winged Wheel Podcast then joins the show (16:15) to dig into the surprising news of Steve Yzerman's removal/promotion/demotion from his GM/Executive VP role for the Detroit Red Wings. Ryan and the guys discuss why the move happened now, what it means for Dylan Larkin, and what a succession plan might look like in Detroit.

Robert is on the road. Sean is back from the road. The guys start out (4:55) by reviewing the offer sheets that hit lately and how the threat of offer sheets allows players like Mavrik Bourque to get bigger deals. as well as some questions about some Jason Robertson rumors. Rachel Flanagan joins the shows (24:49) to discuss her recent week coaching at the Dallas Stars' development camp, her journey through the coaching ranks, what she's learned about her own coaching craft, and the decision to begin coaching in the pro game to begin with. In today's bonus episode, Sean and Robert chat with Will Morlock, the Director of Athletic Performance for MSU's men's hockey program. Morlock discusses his work with players like Thatcher Demko and Porter Martone, how strength work is very different for goalies vs. skaters, and how to prescribe workouts that build strength and protect players. The conversation also touches on the difference between strength and power, who shaped his own development as a coach, and some of his own World Cup picks as a former soccer goalkeeper.

Robert is in a dark corner of Frisco. Sean is on top of everything else, as usual. The guys then spend the second half of the show (27:15) talking about how Carolina finally won another Cup championship, how the NHL built on the momentum of Four Nations with a better-than-expected postseason and Olympics, and the upcoming PWHL and NHL drafts. There's also some musing about Mason McTavish and Mikael Granlund (50:38) when it comes to what the Ducks might do, as well as some digging into the evolution of the mobile defenseman/wingpack position in both soccer and hockey.

Robert and Sean have recorded a special treat: A bonus episode featuring NHL Network's Jason Demers! Seattle Kraken prospect Blake Fiddler joins the show (27:20) to talk about playing for the Edmonton Oil Kings in the WHL, playing for Team USA at the World Championships, and what it was like to grow up playing hockey in Dallas.
