When You Sing Better Alone (And What to Do About It) Feeling frustrated that you can sound completely different when you're singing by yourself than when someone is watching? In this episode, I’m exploring what happens when the attention turns toward us. I'll introduce you to a concept I've been calling the Shrinking Reflex : that automatic impulse to make yourself a little smaller when you're being seen. You want to sing. You want to perform. And simultaneously, another part of you is saying: Please don't look at me. Please don't judge me. Please don't let me mess this up. In this episode, we talk about: Why you can feel like a completely different singer when you're performing Why performance anxiety isn't simply a confidence problem The difference between eliminating nerves and learning to stay connected to yourself How to notice your inner critic without letting it run the show How to stay connected to your breath, your body, and your expression when you're being watched How to become the person who can coach yourself through moments of vulnerability What it means to bring your full self into your singing Step Into the Spotlight — FREE LIVE WORKSHOP When You Want to Sing… But Don't Want to Be Seen 📅 September 14, 2026 🎤 FREE + LIVE ⏰ 90-minute workshop Inside this workshop, we'll explore what's underneath that conflict between wanting to be seen and wanting to hide. EP 23: How to Find YOUR Voice (And Stop Trying to Sound Like Everyone Else) Have you ever wondered if you’ve actually found your voice? Maybe you’ve spent years taking lessons, practicing, studying, listening to other singers, and trying to improve, but somewhere along the way, you started wondering: What does MY voice actually sound like when I’m not trying to sound like someone else? In this episode, I’m talking about my own journey of finding my voice—and what I wish I had understood much earlier. In this episode, we explore: Why finding your voice is about more than vocal technique The difference between developing your instrument and trying to erase what makes it unique Why “non-traditional” vocal qualities can actually become your superpowers How comparison can interfere with discovering your own sound Why curiosity and play are essential to artistic growth How quiet and stillness help you hear your own inner wisdom Why creating safe spaces for exploration can unlock your creativity How to begin developing a deeper relationship with your voice PLUS!! ⬇️ Discovering Your Vocal Superpowers Try this journaling exercise whenever you’re feeling discouraged, stuck, or unsure about your voice. 1. What do I genuinely like about my voice? What do I feel proud of? 2. What positive comments have I received about my voice that have stayed with me? 3. What negative feedback about my voice has stayed with me? 4. Which of those comments actually feel true to me? Which ones feel imposed? 5. What qualities of my voice feel most “me” when I’m relaxed and unguarded? Think beyond technique. Consider tone, emotional expression, phrasing, presence, texture, color, etc. 6. What have I labeled as flaws? For each one, ask: How might this actually be a strength? What does this quality allow me to express that someone else might not be able to? 7. If I stopped trying to sound like anyone else, what do I imagine my voice would sound like? And: How would it feel in my body? How would it change my relationship to singing? AND.....⬇️ 5 Ways to Start Finding YOUR Voice 1. Dabble in other art forms. 2. Don’t learn songs by listening to recordings of other artists. 3. Don't compare. 4. Spend time being quiet. 5. Spend time in safe spaces for exploration. 📚 Mentioned in This Episode Making Play a Part of Practice — Heidi Moss Erickson This article explores the role of play, experimentation, curiosity, and discovery in a singer’s practice—and why creating space for exploration can help us become more expressive, connected artists. EP 22: Meet Your Good Inner Coach How to Grow Your Voice Without Losing Yourself in the Process In this episode, we explore: Why becoming your own teacher doesn't mean knowing everything How to become the expert on your own experience How to distinguish your intuition from your inner critic Why your “good inner coach” motivates through curiosity, encouragement, passion, and joy—not shame Three simple practices for strengthening your connection to your good inner coach Why learning to listen to yourself can actually make your work with a voice teacher MORE productive How to stop outsourcing your knowing while still welcoming guidance and support What are saboteurs and how are they holding you back Your Good Inner Coach Your good inner coach is that centered, wise part of you that can say: “Let's see what happens.” “What does my voice need today?” “What feels freer?” “Let's try it another way.” It isn't the voice telling you that you're terrible. It isn't the perfectionist demanding that you get everything right. And it isn't the people-pleaser worrying about whether everyone else approves. Your good inner coach is curious. Compassionate. Encouraging. Grounded. And most importantly, it helps you grow without speaking harshly to yourself in the process. Want to practice connecting with your good inner coach? Episode 21: Why I Stopped Taking Voice Lessons In my early 30s, after more than 15 years of regular voice study, I stopped taking voice lessons. Not permanently.... I just needed a break. At the time, I knew I needed a break. But looking back, I can see that I needed something much deeper: I needed to learn how to trust myself. I had become overly reliant on outside input. I was filtering my singing through other people’s eyes—worrying about whether I was doing things “right,” whether my teacher was pleased with me, and whether I was performing well for them. I needed to learn how to hear my own voice, trust what I noticed, and ultimately become my own teacher. And that experience completely changed my relationship with singing. In this episode, I’m sharing the 3 lessons I learned: 1. Learn to HEAR your own voice. Not just whether you sound “good” or “bad,” but what you are actually experiencing. What feels freer? What feels more coordinated? What is working today—and what isn’t? 2. Learn to TRUST what you notice. Your intuition isn't the same thing as your inner critic. It’s the quieter voice underneath the noise that can notice, This feels freer. I think I need to try this another way. 3. Become your own teacher. This doesn't mean you stop taking lessons or stop seeking guidance. It means you stop outsourcing your knowing. A good teacher brings expertise you don't have—but you are the expert on your own experience. The goal isn't to stop listening to other people. It's to stop outsourcing your knowing. In this episode, we explore: Why I stopped taking voice lessons after 15+ years of study How people-pleasing and seeking external validation affected my singing The difference between learning from a teacher and relying on a teacher Why your teacher should be a partner—not the authority over your voice How I used experimentation and play to rediscover my voice How to develop your ability to hear your own singing constructively The difference between intuition and your inner critic Questions you can ask yourself when practicing Why your voice may need something different from you each day How to become more actively involved in your vocal development Why becoming your own teacher doesn't mean knowing everything How self-trust can lead to more confidence, ownership, and authentic expression You don't have to figure everything out on your own. You need another set of ears, another perspective, or the guidance of a trusted teacher. But you can learn to bring your own wisdom into the room, too. Then this episode is for you. Episode 13: My Pre-Show Ritual: How I Calm Nerves and Prepare to Sing What should you do on the day of a performance? How long should you warmup for? Drink gallons of water? Hide under a blanket until it's time to go on stage? In this episode of The Joyful Singer Podcast, Erin shares her personal performance day ritual—a routine she developed over more than 30 years of performing on Broadway, Off-Broadway, national tours, regional theatre, concerts, auditions, and countless performances. From her very first professional theatre job at age 20 (earning a whopping $100 a week!) to performing as Christine in The Phantom of the Opera , Erin has learned that the key to a successful performance day isn't perfection. It's about support, care and rest. In this episode, you'll learn how to create a performance day routine that helps calm your nerves, conserve your energy, prepare your voice, and get you into the right mindset so you can walk on stage feeling grounded, focused, and ready to share your gift. In This Episode, You'll Learn: Why Erin believes the entire day of a performance should revolve around one theme: support, care, and rest The truth about hydration (and why chugging water right before you sing isn't the answer) How to use gentle SOVT exercises to wake up your voice without overworking it Why mindfulness and meditation are essential parts of Erin's performance routine The role caffeine, food, sleep, and vocal rest play on performance days How to warm up effectively before a show without singing your best notes in the practice room A powerful visualization exercise Erin has used throughout her performing career to help manage performance anxiety Why what you do after the performance may be just as important as what you do before it Key Takeaway A performance day isn't the day to push harder. It's the day to support yourself. The goal isn't to spend all your energy preparing for the performance—the goal is to save your energy for the performance itself. When you approach the day with intention, care, and trust, you give yourself the best possible chance to walk on stage feeling prepared, present, and connected. How do you speak to yourself after a bad audition? After a mistake? After a performance that didn’t go the way you hoped? Most of us would never speak to a friend the way we sometimes speak to ourselves. And yet, there’s this kind of conversation happening 👇 "You should have done better." "You messed up." "You’re not enough." In this episode of The Joyful Singer Podcast, we’re exploring something powerful: You are already parenting yourself every day. The question is: how? Because whether you realize it or not, you are constantly coaching yourself through fear, disappointment, embarrassment, mistakes, growth, and success. Today we’re talking about how to shift from harshness and shame into something more supportive: ✨ empathy ✨ compassion ✨ encouragement ✨ unconditional love Because your singer self deserves the same kindness you naturally offer to the people you love. In this episode you'll discover: - Why we all have an ongoing "inner parenting voice" - How harsh self-talk often disguises itself as motivation - Why shame and self-criticism can become automatic - The surprising lesson Erin learned while navigating Lyme disease - How conditional love quietly shows up in our relationship with ourselves - Why empathy may be one of your greatest untapped superpowers - How working with a childhood photo can help you reconnect with your essence - The difference between analytical thinking and compassionate wisdom - How to begin developing a more nurturing relationship with yourself as a singer Your invitation this week: Find a childhood picture that brings up good feelings for you. Choose a picture that reminds you of your essence—your joy, spirit, personality, curiosity, playfulness... you. Spend a few moments with it each day and notice: What feelings arise? What do you notice about this little person? How would you speak to them? Can you begin offering that same kindness to yourself now? And throughout the week ask: Can I hold myself with love when I mess up? Can I respond with care instead of criticism? Can I become the parent my singer self needs? A mantra from today's episode: "I love myself." "I love myself." "I love myself." Do you ever feel like your singing has slowly become something you do for everyone else? For the audience. For the teacher. For approval Somewhere along the way, maybe you began to lose touch with what you actually want. In this episode of The Joyful Singer Podcast, we're talking about creating a singing practice that belongs to you first and foremost—one rooted in joy, curiosity, creativity, and connection rather than pleasing and obligation. Inspired by a story from Natalie Portman while filming Black Swan, we explore what happens when we stop performing for approval and start creating from ourselves instead. Because singing doesn't only exist to make you better. It can also exist to make you feel: more connected more alive more honest more like yourself In this episode you'll discover: - Why so many singers slowly disconnect from their own desires and creativity - Four ways to create a singing practice that's actually for you - Why singing doesn't have to be shared publicly to be meaningful - The surprising cost of always singing from obligation instead of joy - Why discipline and joy don't have to compete with one another Mentioned in this episode: 🎧 Episode 5: Vocal Warmups That Actually Work 🎧 Episode 4: Taming Your Inner Critic ➡ FREE Joyful Singing Workshop In this free workshop you'll: • Learn vocal warmups that actually work to strengthen and free your voice • Create a personalized affirmation unique to your voice journey • Explore the beliefs that may be holding you back • Experience my complete 3-step Joyful Singing process Register here: erinstewart.net/joyfulsingingworkshop Connect with Erin: Instagram: @joyfulsingingwitherin Facebook: Erin Stewart - Voice Teacher and Mindset Coach for Singers Have a topic you'd love covered on the podcast? Have you started noticing changes in your voice as you move through midlife? Maybe your voice feels less flexible. Maybe warming up takes longer than it used to. Maybe your range, stamina, breath support, or vocal ease feel different. Or maybe you’ve been feeling disconnected from your voice entirely and you’re wondering how to find your way back. In this episode of The Joyful Singer Podcast, we’re talking about the very real vocal changes that can happen during midlife, aging, perimenopause, and menopause — and how to support your voice with more compassion, intention, and care. A few weeks ago, I hosted a free live workshop called Midlife and Beyond Voice Revival, and the response was incredible. So many singers shared how relieved they felt simply hearing these conversations happening openly and honestly. Because the truth is we don’t talk enough about midlife voices. And we should! Your voice changing does not mean your voice has lost value. It does not mean you are failing. It does not mean your best singing years are behind you. Your voice is evolving. And in many ways, this chapter can bring a new richness, depth, wisdom, and emotional connection to your singing that younger voices simply don’t have yet. In this episode, I’m sharing practical tools to help you: support your changing voice rebuild trust with your instrument stay connected to singing through transitions and approach this season with more gentleness and confidence In this episode, we cover: Common vocal changes that happen with aging How menopause and hormonal shifts can impact the voice Why vocal changes are normal (and workable) The emotional side of changing voices How the inner critic can intensify fear and discouragement Why self-care matters for singers The importance of hydration and vocal recovery SOVT exercises (like straw phonation and lip trills) and why they’re so effective How to adapt your singing practice instead of fighting your voice Why continuing to sing is one of the best things you can do for vocal health We also talk about: adjusting song keys choosing repertoire that supports your current voice reconnecting with joy instead of perfectionism and learning how to work with your voice instead of against it Because this isn’t about trying to force your voice to sound 20 again. It’s about learning how to support the voice you have now — with wisdom, flexibility, curiosity, and care. Your voice matters. Episode 6: How to Sing More Consistently If you’ve been telling yourself, “I just need to be more consistent”… but it’s not happening—this episode is for you. Because the truth is: It’s not about discipline. It’s not about willpower. And it’s not because you don’t care enough. In this episode, we’re rethinking what it actually takes to build a sustainable singing practice—one that fits your life, supports your voice, and feels good enough to keep coming back to. Whether you’ve fallen out of the habit, lost your motivation, or just don’t know where to start again… this is your way back. Inside This Episode: Why inconsistency has nothing to do with laziness The identity shift that changes everything (“I am someone who sings”) Why small, simple practices are more powerful than long, intense ones How to create a routine that works with your life (not against it) The 5 keys to making your singing practice stick: Make it doable Plan ahead Make it enjoyable Make it satisfying Anticipate your inner critic You’ll also learn how to create structure and support so you’re not relying on motivation to show up. A lot of what I’m sharing here is inspired by the work of James Clear in Atomic Habits—especially the idea that we overestimate motivation and underestimate environment. I’ve adapted these ideas specifically for singers.
