It is not uncommon for mood or mental health to feel worse over the Winter. Our first go-to explanation for that is biological: the lack of sunlight. However, while this is a very useful and important aspect to consider, there are other things that can make the Winter harder, too. This episode is all about those things, and what we can do about them. Thank you for listening. As always, here are all the links for the different places you can listen or watch, and how to access more if you want to. Apple Spotify Youtube This is a public episode. This one is something I have worked on a lot myself, and still feel nervous about, but not to the degree that it particularly stops me doing what I want to do. So, these are my thoughts about what helps both in terms of helping you feel like you are doing a better job at it, but also feeling less anxious about the whole thing.I hope it's helpful. Grief is never straightforward, and there isn't only one path that it follows. So, the term "complex grief" might be a confusing one. However, there are times when we might find ourselves crushed by a loss, and times when a loss feels like something that is painful but something we can handle. In this episode my intention is to talk about what kinds of things make grief even more complex than it already is, and what we can do to help ourselves and others. I hope it’s helpful. As usual, you can listen or watch however best suits you via the links below. And, of course, there is a back catalogue waiting for you. "Being present" isn't always easy. I am often doing my best to be fully engaged but really finding that my mind is partly off elsewhere. Maybe thinking about work, jobs I've got to do, things like that. It might be harder when there's something big going on - a worry about health, finances or someone you love, for example. In this episode I talk about a few ways in which you might help yourself to be that little bit more present and importantly: some realistic expectations of how present it is really possible to be. Self-acceptance is a lovely idea but often a very hard thing to do. In this episode I talk about what makes this hard, and one particular and very effective way of approaching it. Sometimes we think of self-acceptance we end up thinking about grand gestures of self-love. Treating yourself to something, walking on the beach with motivational music playing that speaks about empowerment, maybe. But maybe self-acceptance works just like acceptance of other people: it isn't always big or grand gestures. Sometimes it's more about looking at them without judgement (or maybe less judgement). The way we look at and assess other people tends to be different than the way we look at ourselves. We can use that. Let me know what you think. Thank you for listening. This is a central part of most of the work that I do with people: trying to find a balance in the middle ground somewhere. With anxiety, that might be recognising that being vigilant and on the lookout can be helpful, but taken to far can feel overwhelming. In our expectations of ourselves with people-pleasing or perfectionism, some of that is useful but taken too far can make life feel very stressful. Peace lies somewhere in the middle ground: in the ability to be flexible with yourself and your expectations. Here’s all the usual links: Apple: Spotify: Youtube: This is a public episode. Anger is a feeling. It is not inherently good or bad. It is the emotion that is there to drive us to defend ourselves. When we describe anger as a problem, or as “bad,” most of the time it is not anger itself that we have the problem with - it is how the anger is expressed. In the form of aggression, holding things in all day until they explode, or going passive-aggressive and wielding anger in a cold kind of way. In this episode we talk about what anger is, where it comes from, and what to do about the fact that sometimes it can feel like it goes from 0-10 in a flash. We talk about ways in which you can catch it early and do things that help. And why sometimes the job is not about being less bothered by things - but instead allowing yourself to speak up earlier, before things get on top of you. Thank you for listening. Red flags. This is not an easy topic as I think part of the point of red flags is that they are only usually obvious in hindsight. I think we would all like to think that we wouldn't ever be taken in, but the truth is that anybody can be taken in by someone who turns out to be manipulative or dishonest. However, there are some things that are worth thinking about when it comes to paying attention to signs that things might not be quite right. This is not an easy topic and I know can be a sensitive one, so I hope I have done it some justice here. The request for this topic came in from a listener. I've been watching my kids at sports days and it has made me think about the kinds of beliefs we can develop about ourselves. "I am no good at running / maths / painting / dancing..." Beliefs that are black-and-white, with the assumption that things are never going to change. In this episode I talk (slowly - I was mega-hot) about how this can be limiting, and how we can look at things in a more helpful, flexible way. Thank you for listening. Gratitude. To be honest, I have always been a bit sceptical of gratitude as an approach to mental health, because it felt to me like another way of getting someone to dismiss their feelings: "Ah don't feel that way, just be grateful."That isn't my take on it any more and I am grateful for that (see what I did there). Here's my take, with some practical ways you can use it that might be helpful. Links to where you can listen or watch: Apple: Spotify: Youtube: This is a public episode. Expressing and holding boundaries can be tricky sometimes. That might be because you don't feel like you have the right words to use, it might be because you are uncomfortable with conflict or don't know what to do if someone pushes back, or it might even be that ultimately, you don't know what you really want or perhaps don't feel like you have the right to ask for it or to have it. Either way, I hope there's something in here for you. Thank you for listening. OCD is probably one of the most misunderstood anxiety issues and because of that, it can feel very difficult to face. However, like any other issue: once you understand it, it becomes a little clearer and that bit easier to see a way through. In today’s podcast, we are talking about how none of us see the world exactly as it is, and that each of us sees it through our own individual lens. Apple Spotify For me, this is useful to understand because it can help in three ways: it can help us deal with the way that we think and feel, it can help us be a bit more understanding towards ourselves, and it can help us relate better to other people. I hope you enjoy it! Next week it will be a bonus podcast: Breaking out of Overthinking, so if you fancy getting hold of that one, treat yourself to a little upgrade.
