Coach Andrew Miller joins Adam for short monthly conversations about training, racing and the lessons that apply to all trail runners. The show combines specific coaching with useful, zoomed-out advice so everyone can get a glimpse of what it is like to work with a run coach. 1. Running fast when you’ve trained to run slow from The Miller Minutes, opens in a new tab

    Sep 10, 20269 min

It’s great to catch up with Andrew each month, as I really enjoy working with him and his run coaching . This month we got to revisit my Stoked experience in Revelstoke. The three-day event was so much fun. Jacob Puzey and the crew did an incredible job, and I was grateful to take part. The courses were awesome, the village was a blast, and this event is one I would recommend to anyone who has the chance to check it out! Why we didn’t run at Fat Dog: We also chatted a little bit about preparing for an offseason and how to maximize that time. Get some rest and look ahead. Simple enough, right?! Subscribe now and never miss a step It was an honour to run with Andrew this season. I didn’t get to take the start line at Fat Dog 120 as we had hoped, but the training was incredible. I had so many great days out with friends, and it’s a year that I will remember fondly. I hope you all enjoyed the listening this season. 2. Fat Dog 120 Went Up in Smoke. What Do You Do When the Goal Disappears? from The Miller Minutes, opens in a new tab

    Aug 6, 202610 min

Well, it wasn’t the event we pictured when we signed up, and it’s disappointing to face, but Fat Dog 120 being cancelled isn’t the end of my running career, so I will live in the disappointment, grieve the loss, and move on. That’s all we can do, right? The good news is, Coach Andrew Miller has great perspective, and we had a great episode chatting about what to do when your A goal is suddenly gone. It’s not what we want to deal with, but it’s relevant and helpful information when we do have to deal with it. It’s important to appreciate the journey, and that’s never been more evident to me than now. Shout out to the Fat Dog 120 crew, Christine, Erik, and the gang. We know this couldn’t have been easy. Nobody wins in these situations. We wish you some good recovery time and a strong 2027 event! Jul 2, 202610 min

Another great month of training with Andrew has come and gone… somehow. We knocked out our 100km requirement for the Fat Dog 120 this month. I had an amazing day on the trails with a crew of support, and I learned a lot. Those lessons will be taken forward as we get ready for the 120-mile beast in August (that’s, like, really soon). I had a couple of other long runs after the 100km effort, and I was definitely feeling it. So we’re prioritizing recovery as we take on these last few weeks of training. I’m feeling confident in the work we’ve done but still terrified of the goal ahead. It was a great time to catch up with Andrew, and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I enjoy working with Andrew! Another month has gone by, so Andrew and I got together again to touch base and plan. It’s always great chatting with him, and this month I had some fears he had to quell because the race is getting closer and I’m getting nervous! Andrew also touched on how to take care of my body out there during a long effort, and we get set for my 100km challenge here in June! Coach Andrew Miller is once again taking me under his wing as I prepare for my longest personal challenge to date, the Fat Dog 120. 5. Why practicing with your poles will make you fuel better on race day from The Miller Minutes, opens in a new tab

    May 7, 20269 min

Another month is in the books as my coach, Andrew Miller, gets me ready for Fat Dog 120 in August. I had some dentistry and work travel to work around, but still had a productive month, hitting 5 hours on my long runs and starting to dial in nutrition and hydration. I’m tracking what I’m drinking and eating out there, and I’ve been getting more practice with my poles. It does take some adjustment as you have to be more deliberate about eating and drinking when your hands have poles in them. Andrew was happy with where we are at and expects May to look a lot like April as far as training goes. We have my first 100k challenge in June, so that’s the next checkpoint! Apr 2, 202610 min

It was another solid month, even if I didn’t feel like I got in a groove. Andrew added some hiking days, and we’ve increased the length of the long run. As running takes up more hours on the calendar, I’m learning to adjust, and it’s been great having Andrew guide me along! I’m getting excited as I’ve mapped out my June 100k and it was great getting to catch up and plan out April. Coach Andrew Miller is once again taking me under his wing as I prepare for my longest personal challenge to date, the Fat Dog 120. February was a good month, and even though it wasn’t perfect (Andrew reminded me that life is never perfect), we made some great progress and are feeling really positive about heading into March. We added some tempo run/interval workouts and increased the long run. And I even get a bonus 100k effort out of the deal! January went quite well for me as far as getting back out consistently. It wasn’t perfect, but it was certainly a great start, and we’re moving into February with confidence. My races are starting to pick up, so I need to start running those and planning our training for the calendar. It’s nice to work with Andrew and not stress about what I’ve not been doing, instead focusing on what we did do, and what we can do moving forward. Running with a coach is a lot of fun! It was really fun running a stage race for the first time as well as running in the desert for the first time! I had some stomach issues I had to deal with, and getting used to the hot desert sun was a new experience, but the weekend went great overall. Houda invited me down and I was thrilled to be able to say yes. This event looks like an absolute blast, Chantelle Erickson took part last year and told me it’s incredible, so I can’t wait to give it a go myself. Here is description from their website: Moab Run the Rocks lets you pick your poison so you have the best chance of achieving your goals on some of the most sought-after singletrack on the planet. Choose between two stage race lengths— The Full Pint or The Half Pint —each consisting of three stages held over three days. For runners looking to fill their cup, The Full Pint offers a spectacular route totaling 53.6 miles (85.6 km) and 4,480 ft (1,356 m) of vertical gain. And for those interested in a shorter challenge that doesn’t hold back on thrilling terrain, The Half Pint delivers a route totaling 33.1 miles (53.1 km) and 2,670 ft (811 m) of vertical gain. No matter which length you choose, fun is sure to be had by all during this unique stage race and spring trail running festival. Registration is limited to 600 runners and sold out for 2025! You’ll have to put it on your calendars for 2026 after reading about it, and especially after following my adventure along ;) Full episode with this month’s “The Miller Minutes”: Get full access to Community Trail Running at www.communitytrailrunning.com/subscribe
