  1. Gary Sorace "Mastermind of the Mat" from The Dynasty Effect, opens in a new tab

    Aug 31, 20261 hr 16 min

Long before national rankings, super tournaments and powerhouse programs became the norm, Gary Sorace was helping lay the foundation for modern Ohio wrestling. A 1970 Ohio State Champion from Maple Heights, Cleveland State wrestler, longtime coach and one of the most influential assistants in St. Edward wrestling history, Sorace joins The Dynasty Effect Podcast to share stories spanning more than five decades in the sport. Gary explains how a chance meeting with legendary Coach Howard Ferguson changed his life, eventually leading him to help build the early St. Edward dynasty. He reveals how Ferguson spent hours filling legal pads with notes, how the famous technique charts hanging in the St. Edward wrestling room were created, and how the training methods from Maple Heights became the blueprint for one of the greatest programs in America. The conversation also uncovers Gary's role in creating the original Quad of Champions, an event that helped inspire future national super events like the Ironman Tournament, along with his philosophy of always seeking out the nation's best competition. Gary opens up about the heartbreaking end to his own college career after learning Cleveland State had failed to file his redshirt paperwork, costing him his final NCAA Tournament opportunity despite a 14-1 season. Instead of walking away from the sport, he poured his passion into coaching and helping build championship programs. Throughout the episode, Gary shares timeless coaching lessons on motivation, building dynasties, developing athletes instead of chasing rankings, treating every wrestler differently, and why the greatest coaches understand that not every athlete is motivated the same way. Lance Palmer is one of the most accomplished wrestlers to ever come out of Ohio. A four time Ohio State Champion for St. Edward High School, Palmer became the first wrestler in school history to win four state titles and one of the most dominant wrestlers the state has ever produced. His success continued at Ohio State University where he became a Big Ten Champion, four time NCAA All-American, and NCAA finalist. After college, Palmer transitioned into professional fighting and quickly became one of the top featherweights in the sport. He captured two World Series of Fighting titles and later won two Professional Fighters League championships, building a career as one of the most successful wrestlers to cross over into MMA. In this episode of The Dynasty Effect Podcast, Palmer discusses his journey through the legendary St. Edward wrestling program, the pressure and expectations that came with chasing four state titles, and what it took to compete at the highest levels of college wrestling. He also reflects on helping build Ohio State into a national contender during the early years of the Tom Ryan era. The conversation also dives into one of the most unusual chapters of Palmer’s life: bear wrestling. Palmer explains how he first got involved, what it was really like stepping into the ring with a bear, and how those experiences fit into his broader journey in combat sports. Today, Palmer remains deeply involved in the fight world through Real American Freestyle (RAF), helping build creative and exciting new opportunities for wrestlers and fighters. This episode explores the mindset of a champion, the transition from wrestling to fighting, and the lessons learned from competing at the highest levels of combat sports.
