How many fish can your aquarium actually hold? It sounds like a simple question, but stocking gets complicated quickly. A tank can have enough biological filtration to process waste and still be limited by oxygen, swimming space, territory, social behavior, or the amount of maintenance needed to keep the system stable. That becomes especially confusing with schooling fish. You may be told that a species needs a larger group to feel secure and behave more naturally—but at the same time, a stocking calculator may tell you that your aquarium is already full. So how can “add more fish” ever be the right advice? Why is your aquarium water cloudy? White, green, brown, and hazy aquarium water can have very different causes—and figuring out what you’re actually looking at is the first step toward deciding whether you need to do anything about it. Cloudy aquarium water is a symptom, not a diagnosis. A milky bacterial bloom can look similar to suspended substrate dust or thousands of tiny microbubbles. Green water is usually a completely different issue involving free-floating algae, while brown or tea-colored water may simply be tannins released by driftwood, leaves, botanicals, or other materials in the aquarium. UV can be extremely useful for certain types of green water but won’t remove tannin coloration. Activated carbon may help remove tannins but isn’t a universal solution for suspended substrate dust. Fine mechanical filtration can capture particles, but it can’t fix every biological or chemical reason water may look different. Why are your aquarium fish dying even though your water parameters are good? Normal ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, and temperature readings can rule out some common problems, but they can’t tell you everything affecting your fish. Low dissolved oxygen, chlorine or chloramine exposure, disease, sudden changes in water chemistry, contamination, stress, and other problems may not show up in the tests you normally perform. In this episode of Tank Guide Life, we look beyond the usual water test results to explore why freshwater aquarium fish can become stressed, start gasping, behave abnormally, or die even when the water parameters seem normal. We also investigate another common and confusing problem: Why do fish sometimes struggle or die after a water change?
