Welcome to Through the Ruth - where we explore life inside the walls we call home, and the lives we build around them. I'm Ruth Mathews - Professional Property Manager, storyteller, and lover of all things home. Each week, we'll open the door to real stories, design inspiration, and practical tips for shifting house, creating calm spaces, and keeping your home safe, secure, and beautifully comfortable. Interviewing tenants, landlords and fellow professionals in the industry on what home life is like for them, the lessons learnt and words of wisdom shared from their experiences, including living in a haunted house, co-sharing and finally living on your own when the kids fly the coup. Because whether you own, rent or simply dream - everyone deserves to feel at home. So, make yourself at home...you're listening to Through the Ruth.

  1. S4 E4 Dog Gone - the grief of losing your beloved four legged baby from Through the Ruth - A Podcast where we get to the heart of home, opens in a new tab

    Sep 15, 202616 min

Pet ownership is a double edged sword. They are with us for such a short time and yet show us a life time of love. If you or someone you know has lost their shadow, their best friend, their baby, I hope we can share in this time of grief after losing my 'mini-me' Agatha. Thank you for choosing to join me.

  2. S4 E3 - When your favourite place in the world is BEING AT HOME from Through the Ruth - A Podcast where we get to the heart of home, opens in a new tab

    Jul 21, 202610 min

My home looks different to yours. Have you considered what that means and why? The people that live inside it are different, so what we like to do is different too. We learn by sharing stories and gain insight when we hear how other people describe their 'normal' when they get home from work. Stop and think 'Where is my favourite place in this world' and if it isn't home, then change it until it is the first thing you jump up and answer without a blink of an eye. Share with me what is your life when home, ruth@thepmboutique.com.au xoxo Ruth.

  3. Season 4 Episode 2 Sharing Really Is Caring from Through the Ruth - A Podcast where we get to the heart of home, opens in a new tab

    Jul 8, 20268 min

We all live differently, so can you imagine learning what is normal to you ACTUALLY isn't normal to someone else!? There is no quicker way to learn this than to live with someone else. One might have grown up in a noisy household and the other jumps at loud noises. We often live with different people throughout our lives, whether it be when we are growing up, first moving out of home and having 'flat mates' right though to when we have a life partner and then have kids or others move in to make the household big. Thank you for joining me for another episode xoxo Ruth

  4. Season 4 Episode 1 - Domestic Servitude or Partnership from Through the Ruth - A Podcast where we get to the heart of home, opens in a new tab

    Jun 28, 20267 min

In many homes, one person runs everything and the other sits back and reaps the rewards. This episode is not about gender BUT STATISTICALLY it is the Male that is not meeting their share. If this is not your household, then great, but what if it is? Is it fair for the female to be doing more than half the role of home (including cleaning, cooking, paying bills, getting extensions, going to shops, chemist, doctors appointments, booking all appointments, taking kids to sport, paying for these, cancelling when they are sick, taking time off work to tend to sickness in the house, booking leave ahead for appointments etc. etc. ) and then be expected to also work full time? and maybe then also sharing the cost fifty fifty? As an adult, who doesn't simply want a second mum, needs to step up and take HALF the role of looking after home. Gender should not be an excuse for servitude. Free domestic labour. Because it's a second FULL TIME ROLE and true partnership is exactly that. Partnership. I am one of the lucky ones. But saying that alone is sad. Lucky ones? So many of my friends do not have that 'fortune' with their partners and then the partners say they were blind sighted when they finally leave. Partnership. What do you think that means exactly. What can change for the better now, so it doesn't change for the worse later and you 'never saw it coming'.

  5. Season 3 Episode 8 IF ONLY THESE WALLS COULD TALK from Through the Ruth - A Podcast where we get to the heart of home, opens in a new tab

    Jun 2, 20267 min

Have you ever thought about who sees you. The real you. The one behind closed doors. We automatically think about the people inside these areas only. But the home itself sees and knows the real you. The one you cant hide from others. And perhaps that's why we are so comfortable being at home. It doesn't judge us, or tell others. It just listens. Thank you for listening, Ruth xoxo

  6. Season 3 Episode7 - The Direction Of Divorce from Through the Ruth - A Podcast where we get to the heart of home, opens in a new tab

    May 17, 202610 min

No one starts a family with the expectation it will end in Divorce. Even if not married but you have a family together, separation hits home hard, even when the split is amicable. Todays episode we have guest speaker Billie who works for a Law Firm discuss what to consider to keep the change moving in a successful direction. If your heading towards the big D word, what can you do now to prepare, and what should you do even when your both in agreement of the next direction for the family. A big shout out to Billie for sharing her knowledge base in an effort to keep the process flowing successfully. **Note: No content on this Podcast is Legal Advice. It is recommended you seek your own advice for your circumstances at all times** xoxo Ruth

  7. Season 3 Episode 6 Your Home & Your Nervous System from Through the Ruth - A Podcast where we get to the heart of home, opens in a new tab

    May 11, 202611 min

Join me as we discuss the way our home affects our nervous systems! What makes the atmosphere feel different? What can we do to change it? thank you for joining me again, Ruth xoxo

  8. Season 3 Episode 5 - Reinventing Yourself Each Time You Move from Through the Ruth - A Podcast where we get to the heart of home, opens in a new tab

    May 3, 20268 min

In this episode we discuss the philosophy of how homes shape who we are, who we want to be and who we used to be. We can look back at memories and know we are not the same person as we were when we lived there. We would now make different choices, and sometimes we wouldn't change a thing. If only walks could talk hey, imagine the versions of people that resided there before and after you AND who are now different to who they were too at that time. That version of all those people no longer exists. Fascinating. Thank you for joining me again, in my journey to find get to the heart of home. xoxo Ruth.

  9. Season 3 Episode 4 - Moving On Up & Moving On Out from Through the Ruth - A Podcast where we get to the heart of home, opens in a new tab

    Apr 25, 20264 min

Thank you for joining me in another episode of Through The Ruth. In this episode we think about what happens to us when we shift. Its not just physical, but especially mental. Its thinking of memories but allowing ourselves to prepare for more. And just like we change our homes, we change who we are too and who we want to be for the future. xoxo Ruth.

  10. Season 3 Episode 3 - What Has Love Got To Do With It? from Through the Ruth - A Podcast where we get to the heart of home, opens in a new tab

    Apr 20, 20265 min

In this episode we stop to consider what we all have to be thankful about. What makes our memories? When we are always looking ahead, and expecting everything to be done yesterday, what happens around us that we so easily dismiss that will one day be a memory we may look back on and appreciate - wishing we had been more 'present' at that time. Home is as much an emotion as it is physical. Being present is half the challenge. Thank you and join me again for another episode of 'Through The Ruth' xoxo Ruth.

  11. Season Three Episode 2 - The relationship of Renting from Through the Ruth - A Podcast where we get to the heart of home, opens in a new tab

    Apr 14, 20268 min

Welcome home! In this episode we discuss when trust falls. Can we get it back? What will that look like? Do we remedy or do we part ways. Not all tenancies are meant to be long term. BUT what if you want the tenancy relationship to be long term, what can YOU do to make it a success? I hope you enjoy this episode, and feel free to email me if you have a topic you want covered; ruth@thepmboutique.com.au

  12. Season 3 Episode 1: Designing 5 Star Tenancies from Through the Ruth - A Podcast where we get to the heart of home, opens in a new tab

    Mar 29, 202614 min

Have you ever wondered why some have long term tenants and others turn them over every year? Why do your friends always get their lease renewed but you don't seem able to retain one? Perhaps you just don't seem to feel the system is fair. In this episode we cover the key factors to longevity in a rental, and this is from both sides. No one wants to live in a home where they are treated rudely, where they are made to feel second class all AND owners don't want to be made to feel like they are money hungry bad people when they need to meet the costs to retain the property. RESPECT is something that can be a game changer. Thanks for listening to another episode of Through the Ruth with me, if you have a topic you think I should cover, please flick me an email: Ruth@thePMBoutique.com.au or go over to our website www.thepmboutique.com.au Thanks again, Ruth.

  13. Season 2 Episode Ten - The Hard Conversation to Have from Through the Ruth - A Podcast where we get to the heart of home, opens in a new tab

    Mar 17, 20268 min

This episode focuses on the topics we sometimes have to have, but are also the hardest to have. The topics where you might need to let the owner know the rent will be late this week, or where an owner might need to increase the rent, or perhaps you need to chase up reported maintenance or have to let the tenant know there is going to be a delay caused by tradespeople. You see, the relationship between an owner and a tenant, even when through a professional, can be hard to have. As humans, we tend to want to put off the hard topics, but delaying them can make it even harder. Being a tenant isn't easy AND being a Landlord isn't easy. Only with clear communication and putting 'cards on the table' can we give clarity, transparency and respect which builds trust. A hard conversation is rarely because of spite or anger. I hope to open the channels of communication to avoid disrespect or elongation of a hard topic, showing you that it can be done easier for both parties. Thank you for joining me for another episode, and apologies it is a little late this week! Warm regards, Ruth

  14. Season Two Episode 9 - When its Landlord vs Tenant from Through the Ruth - A Podcast where we get to the heart of home, opens in a new tab

    Mar 10, 20267 min

What happens when communication becomes non-existent? There is no communication, literally. And when there is no communication, both sides assume the worst of the other. So what can be done to avoid this from happening in the first place? it all starts with listening to the other in order for us to have an understanding of what's going on. With understanding comes respect. This is the pillar of stability for both sides. A good Property Manager will encourage and maintain communication with both sides to ensure longevity and stability on both sides. Thanks for listening to another episode of 'Through the Ruth'

  15. Season 2 Episode 8 The Rooms We Avoid from Through the Ruth - A Podcast where we get to the heart of home, opens in a new tab

    Mar 1, 20267 min

We all have that one room we avoid. Usually only opening when we desperately need something we threw in there long ago, or to add to its pile. It might be a room, or for some it might be that kitchen table starting to pile up. For me, its both the main bedroom and the linen press. Both are never where I wish they would be in organisation and even cleanliness. So is everyone to the same? What if those spaces were saying something about us rather than the items actually in there. Be sure to follow and subscribe, and thank you for joining me for another episode of 'Through The Ruth'

  16. Season 2 Episode 7 The Front Of Your Life from Through the Ruth - A Podcast where we get to the heart of home, opens in a new tab

    Feb 22, 202611 min

Have you ever made judgement on someone the moment you rocked up to their house? What do you think of a home with 6 cars on the lawn compared to the neighbouring home that has a precision cut English Garden? In this episode, we dig a little deeper not only on our own judgements made, but what people might think of our own Front Yard. A friendly little reminder to get out there and do something. Make one little change. Effort doesn't have to mean cost, just time. And getting outside might be just the thing you need. So grab yourself a fresh brew and sit down for another episode of Through The Ruth. Ruth xoxo

  17. At Home In A Healthy Body from Through the Ruth - A Podcast where we get to the heart of home, opens in a new tab

    Feb 15, 202622 min

Join me for another episode of Through The Ruth, where today I share my secrets to my personal journey of getting healthy again. This one is a little different than past episodes to date as I want to expand your thoughts not beyond the walls we call home, but to take you deep inside.... Inside our Bodies! Feeling 'At Home' within the body we are given, and how can we make the vessel that homes our minds as best as it can be. We think of a spring clean or New Yrs Resolution as our surroundings, but what about the home we were given minds to reside in our whole life, and how can we make just little changes to get the ball rolling towards big change if we are not happy with it? Hope you like this episode, feel free to let me know what topics you want covered in future episodes too! Ruth.

  18. Season Two Episode 5 - Home Is Never Alone from Through the Ruth - A Podcast where we get to the heart of home, opens in a new tab

    Feb 8, 202611 min

When you make your home environment exactly what you need it to be, you are never alone. In this episode, we cover How to stay grounded, creating an environment for right now, identifying what is important to you, and hit repeat. Whether you own or rent, you have a right to settle in and make your home what you need it to be - especially as a tenant. You don't need to live like everything lacks permanency. There are 'rent friendly' ideas you can use to create your home that you need. So put on the kettle, and join us for another episode to help you enjoy the life your living by getting to the heart of home!

  19. Season 2 Episode 4 - Interview with Di Robson - Industry Trainer & Mentor from Through the Ruth - A Podcast where we get to the heart of home, opens in a new tab

    Feb 1, 202618 min

Ever wondered what it would be like being in the industry of homes for 40 odd years? Imagine the changes that have happened both in prices of homes let alone the technology. Well Di has done just that. Not only has she seen it all, she shares with us a few of her hopes for the future, a memory or two, and recommendations to anyone looking at Property Management as a career - it's not as easy as some people think, and we have a lot of legislation in place to ensure it is done right. Take a listen to a hilarious example of when the unexpected happens and why she rocked up back at the office with dirt on her face and crumpled paperwork! If you have any topic to do with HOME you want me to cover, send me an email: ruth@thepmboutique.com.au and I hope you enjoy not only this episode but some amazing topics to come that will assist with ways to make your house the best home you need.

  20. Season 2 Episode 3 - THE REAL COST OF LIVING from Through the Ruth - A Podcast where we get to the heart of home, opens in a new tab

    Jan 18, 202616 min

Thank you for joining me for another episode of Through the Ruth. Todays episode we discuss the Cost of Living and how it affects the home. If I've learnt one thing, it's that there is never a 'perfect time' where we finally allow ourselves to be happy. It becomes a choice. I hope this episode has you thinking of what is important to keep and what can simply be let go, so the pressure can be minimised and shared within the home to reduce the stress we live with during these times. Don't forget to follow and join me again for another episode of Through the Ruth.
