Europe may be getting larger—but not through traditional EU expansion. In this video, I examine Ursula von der Leyen’s proposal for a new European Security Council that could include Ukraine, Canada, the United Kingdom and Norway. Canada could also become the EU’s first “associate member,” even though that status does not currently exist. These developments are connected to something larger. Russian drones are crossing borders, railway infrastructure is being sabotaged, Western officials narrowly avoided a Russian strike near Poland, and European leaders are increasingly admitting that declarations of “resolve” have not deterred Moscow. I examine reports that Russian Major General Anton Grunas, commander of the 4th Separate Motor Rifle Brigade, was killed in occupied Donetsk Oblast on September 12. Grunas had personally briefed Vladimir Putin on Russia’s claimed capture of Konstantinovka and received the Gold Star Hero of Russia less than three weeks before his reported death. Yet available battlefield maps do not support a full Russian capture of the city. I assess what this episode says about propaganda, command vulnerability, and Ukraine’s unmanned systems forces. I also cover Ukraine’s reported strike on an Su-24 at Saki airfield in occupied Crimea, the reported shutdown of the Kirishi refinery and reduced output at other major diesel facilities, and damage to a warehouse beside Taganrog’s Atlant Aero drone producer. I examine a rapidly worsening set of security incidents across Europe: a Russian jet-powered drone hit a Kyiv–Warsaw train two kilometers from Poland, while Italian Typhoons on NATO’s Baltic air-policing mission shot down an unidentified drone after it entered Lithuania from Belarus. The Lithuanian drone was reportedly over the country for roughly half an hour, and officials assessed a high probability that it carried an explosive charge. I also assess the limits of attribution around rail disruption in the Netherlands and a drone crash near Germany’s Wunstorf Air Base, alongside Russia’s threats toward Poland and Belarusian drills near NATO borders. The larger military trend is stark: reported Russian jet-drone strikes rose from about 350 in June to more than 2,800 in August. I examine a consequential night in the Russia-Ukraine war: Ukraine reported strikes on the TANECO refinery in Tatarstan—more than 1,200 kilometers from Ukraine—and the Slavyansk EKO refinery in Krasnodar, a facility with roughly 5.2 million tons of annual processing capacity. I also look at reported hits on UAV launch infrastructure, repeaters, radar assets, and facilities at Taganrog, including claims that the city had lost operational Pantsir and S-300/S-400 systems. I examine Ukraine’s reported 300-drone overnight campaign against targets in Russia and occupied Ukraine—a near two-to-one contrast with the 129 drones Russia reportedly launched at Ukraine. It is official. Russia's 2026 Offensive has failed. I examine reports that Ukrainian forces have dismantled the Russian salient north of Lyman, driving Russian troops back toward the Zherebets River and potentially restoring parts of the front to its May 2025 position.
