Your body isn’t the problem—your mind is. Ultra runners don’t stop because they’re too tired. They stop because doubt, fear, and hesitation convince them to quit. You’ve trained your legs, lungs, and endurance, but when things get tough, does your mindset hold up? True mental toughness isn’t about being fearless. It’s about knowing—deep down—that no matter what happens on race day, you have the resilience, grit, and mental strength to keep moving forward. Unstoppable Ultra Runner is for you if you’re asking: *Why do I lose my confidence when a race gets hard? Learn how to trust yourself and stay mentally strong when it matters most. *How do I stop second-guessing myself before a big race? Develop an unshakable belief in your training and your ability to finish. *What’s the secret to pushing through when It seems impossible? Master the mindset shifts that separate those who stop from those who keep going. *How do I handle setbacks without falling apart? Turn challenges into fuel, so you come back stronger every time. *Why do I always play it safe instead of going after big goals? Break free from self-doubt and run with the confidence to chase what you really want. Hosted by Susan Donnelly, a veteran ultra runner with over 150 100-mile ultra finishes, Unstoppable Ultra Runner gives you the mindset focus you need to run your best races. As a coach, Susan has helped ultra runners of all levels—beginners to veterans—build confidence, increase performance, and go after big goals with a mental game that matches their physical training. Training plan entitlement is the belief that choosing and completing the right training plan means you’re owed a good race. In this episode, I’ll show you why this thinking can undermine your self-trust, how handing your decisions and expectations over to a training plan can actually work against you, and what to do instead so you’re prepared to handle whatever happens on race day. Discover how to use your training plan as a tool without letting it make your decisions for you and learn how to build the kind of self-trust that doesn’t depend on having an easy race, but on knowing you can handle a hard one. If you're constantly worried about cutoff, it's easy to assume you need to train harder or run faster. But you may already have more time available than you realize. The problem is that without noticing it, you could be giving that time away mile after mile to distractions that have nothing to do with getting you to the finish line. In this episode, I share the top three distractions I see stealing runners' attention and valuable race time, and explain how each one pulls your focus away from what you need to be doing right now, whether that's maintaining your pace, fueling consistently, or simply paying attention to the trail in front of you. In this episode, I introduce one of the core philosophies behind my coaching: the concept of the infinite game. I explain why viewing ultra running as one long game, rather than a series of make-or-break races, changes everything. No single race can ever be a verdict on your ability, and changing your mindset on this lowers the fear of failure, and helps you race with more confidence, freedom, and enjoyment. When you stop treating every race like the final exam of your ultra running, you free yourself to learn from every experience, and keep growing for years to come. This episode will show you how embracing the infinite game can help you let go of unnecessary pressure, and enjoy the challenge of becoming a better ultra runner one race at a time. We often think coaching is about learning mental skills, improving race execution, or building better plans. But this week, I explain why some of the biggest breakthroughs in ultrarunning come from something much harder to measure: having someone who helps you stop holding yourself back, and gives you permission to chase the goals you really want. Whether you're preparing for your first ultra, returning from a setback, or wondering what's missing in your running, this episode will show you what coaching really gives you as an ultrarunner. I share what my own recovery taught me about the value of coaching, and explain why belief, permission, and consistent support can change far more than your race results. After a disappointing race, it's easy to look for someone or something to blame. You trained hard. You followed the plan. You did everything you could. So when your race falls apart, the thought, "My body betrayed me," can feel completely justified. But what if that seemingly harmless thought is quietly damaging your confidence, your motivation, and your future as an ultrarunner? This week, discover how to evaluate a disappointing race without turning against yourself, why taking responsibility gives you more control instead of less, and how building trust with your body can help you race with more confidence for years to come. If you've ever walked away from a race feeling like your body let you down, this episode will give you a healthier, stronger way to move forward. There's a moment before every race where you make a bet on yourself, and most runners don't realize they're making it. Do you go after the goal you really want, knowing you might not achieve it? Or do you choose the goal that feels safer because you're afraid of falling short? That one decision shapes how you approach your race before you ever reach the starting line and says far more about what you believe you're capable of than most ultra runners realize. In this episode, I explore why so many ultra runners hold themselves back before the race even begins. I break down the hidden cost of choosing the safe goal, why fear often disguises itself as being realistic, and how the goal you choose influences your race strategy, your confidence, and the relationship you build with yourself as an ultra runner. What if the biggest thing holding you back in ultrarunning isn't your fitness, your training, or your mindset, but a set of rules you never consciously agreed to? Many of us unknowingly carry beliefs about what an ultrarunner is supposed to do, what races we're supposed to run, how much we're supposed to suffer, or what success is supposed to look like. Over time, those expectations can quietly turn a sport we love into something that feels heavy. In this episode, hear some of the most common assumptions in ultrarunning that may be stealing your enjoyment of the sport, and discover what becomes possible when you stop chasing someone else's version of ultrarunning and start defining your own. This episode will give you a practical way to stop spinning in indecision, let go of the need for certainty, and move forward with far less wasted mental energy. Have you ever considered dropping out of a race because you felt guilty for making everyone wait on you? You realize you're the last runner on the course, the aid station is packing up, and you don't want to keep the volunteers waiting any longer, especially when they've already given up their weekend to help. In this episode, I unpack one of the most common and powerful mindset traps ultra runners face: believing you're inconveniencing volunteers, your crew, or the race director by staying in the race. I explain why those thoughts feel so convincing, what volunteers, crew members, and race directors really feel about you staying in the race, and how changing the way you think about receiving help can transform your entire race experience. When most runners think about mental skills, they think about the big moments that require them. Pushing through pain. Digging deep when they want to quit. Finding the determination to make it to the finish line. But surprisingly, that's not where mental skills make the biggest difference. The truth is, your race is shaped long before you reach that dramatic moment. In this episode, you'll learn how thousands of small decisions influence your performance and what it looks like to engage your mind from the very first step instead of waiting until the race is on the line. When you stop treating mental skills as an emergency tool and start using them throughout your race, you'll waste less time, race with greater confidence, and give yourself a much better chance of reaching the finish line. You're deep into a race. Your legs hurt, your energy is gone, and every step feels harder than the last. Your body is telling you it's done, so it's done... right? Not necessarily. One of the biggest mistakes ultra runners make is assuming they know what their body is saying when they're actually listening to something else entirely. In this episode, I break down why so many runners struggle to know when to push and when to back off during a race. You'll discover how to tell the difference between what your body is actually communicating and the story your brain is telling about it, and how to build a stronger relationship with your body so you can race with more confidence. What do you do when it feels like everything you worked for has been taken away? Whether it's an injury, a surgery, a string of DNFs, or another setback you never saw coming, most runners fall into one of two traps: settling for a smaller future or becoming obsessed with getting back to who they used to be. In this episode, I share what I learned in the days after my hip replacement surgery and why I chose neither of those paths. Facing the possibility of losing the future I thought I wanted forced me to rethink everything. What I discovered was that setbacks don't just take things away. Sometimes they reveal possibilities you couldn't see before. Every race gives you experience. Few runners turn that into improvement. The Ultrarunner’s Mastery Debrief Template helps you evaluate your races like experienced ultrarunners do - identifying what worked, what didn’t work, and what to do differently next time. If you can't run ultras right now, are you still an ultra runner? It's a question no runner wants to ask, but injuries, DNFs, setbacks, and major life changes have a way of forcing it into the spotlight. When running is a big part of how you see yourself, losing the ability to run can feel like losing a part of who you are. In this episode, I share my own experience of facing that question after two difficult DNFs, six months without running, and a hip replacement. You'll discover why identity is self-assigned, not circumstance-assigned, and how to stay connected to the ultra runner you are even when you can't train, race, or finish the way you want to. Six years ago, a surgeon told me I had only two years of running left before I would need a hip replacement. In an instant, the future I had imagined for myself as an ultra runner disappeared. What followed was six years of fear, grief, frustration, uncertainty, and countless moments when I wished things were different. I wanted a different outcome. I wanted a different reality. What helped me through wasn't avoiding that reality, it was learning how to accept it and keep moving forward anyway. In this episode, I share the three mental mastery tools that helped me face an uncertain future, make difficult decisions, and find peace with a situation I never would have chosen. Whether you’re dealing with an injury, a race that didn’t go as planned, or a challenge completely outside of running, these lessons will show you how to move forward when life refuses to cooperate. Every ultra runner faces the same mental challenges in a race: lows, distractions, problems, pain, and difficult decisions. The difference between runners who consistently struggle and runners who consistently finish strong often comes down to whether they know how to handle those moments effectively. In this episode, I’m breaking down the five mental skills I believe every ultra runner needs to race well and finish reliably. You’ll discover how these five skills work together as a complete race system and why mastering them changes the way you race. You want more from ultra running. You want to get faster, finish more reliably, and enjoy this sport at a higher level. But if you’re stuck getting the same results race after race, despite all your physical training, there may be bigger obstacles holding you back than your mileage, nutrition, or gear. This week, I’m breaking down the three biggest things I see keeping runners from reaching their true potential. You’ll learn how to identify what’s really holding you back, why mental mastery is essential to closing the gap between where you are and where you want to be, and what it takes to finally step into your next level as an ultra runner. What do you do when the odds say you probably won’t succeed? In this episode, I’m breaking down what ultra runners can learn from one of the biggest long shot victories in sports and how to keep believing in yourself when the outcome feels uncertain. When you’re facing a race that feels intimidating, whether it’s a new distance, a comeback after a DNF, or a goal that feels bigger than anything you’ve done before, waiting for proof that you can succeed will keep you stuck. The real shift happens when you stop letting the odds dictate your decisions and start choosing to believe that success is possible, even before you know exactly how it will happen. Every ultra runner worries about making the wrong call in a hard moment. Did you back off for a legitimate reason, or did you let yourself off the hook with an excuse? In this episode, I’m breaking down one of the most important mental skills an ultra runner can build: how to tell the difference so you can stop second guessing yourself and trust your decisions. You’ll discover two simple tests to help you tell whether you’re acting from an excuse or a valid reason. I’ll show you how to make clearer decisions, avoid the guilt and regret that come from giving in to excuses, and build the kind of self trust that allows you to train and race with greater confidence.
