“Functional training” has become one of the most overused and misunderstood terms in fitness. Some people associate it with kettlebells, unstable surfaces, unilateral exercises, carries, sandbags and multiplanar movement. Others hear the term and immediately dismiss the entire concept. In this episode of the Judd Lienhard Podcast, Judd argues that both sides are missing the point. Functional training is not a specific style of exercise. By definition, training is functional when it improves the function or performance that matters to the individual doing it. That means the same exercise can be functional for one athlete, non-functional for another and potentially dysfunctional for someone else. ⏱ TIMESTAMPS: 00:00:00 What Functional Training Actually Means 00:00:15 The Problem With “Functional” vs. “Non-Functional” Training 00:00:43 Defining Functional, Non-Functional & Dysfunctional Exercise 00:02:30 Why Strength Training Is Usually Functional 00:05:10 Can Bodybuilding Make You Less Athletic? 00:08:00 Why Compound Lifts Improve Athletic Performance 00:10:45 The Real Reason Bodybuilders Can Look Unathletic 00:14:05 Why Machines & Bodybuilding Can Still Be Functional 00:17:20 Why Strong Athletes Need Different Training 00:19:55 The Case for Isolation Exercises 00:23:45 Why Leg Extensions & Biceps Curls Aren’t “Useless” 00:27:05 Compound vs. Isolation Training Explained 00:29:15 Why Machines Can Be MORE Functional Than Free Weights 00:32:55 When an Exercise Becomes Non-Functional 00:35:20 Strength Training for Boxers & Athletes 00:38:25 Why the Same Exercise Works Differently for Every Sport 00:40:15 The Case for “Functional” Training 00:42:30 Special Strength & Bridging the Gap to Athletic Performance 00:45:20 The Problem With Functional Training Dogma 00:47:45 The Problem With Barbell-Only Training 00:49:55 How to Choose Exercises Based on YOUR Needs 00:52:20 How Judd Structures His Own Training 00:55:00 Finding the Right Balance of Strength, Power & Isolation Work 00:56:40 Stop Asking Whether an Exercise Is “Functional” Follow Judd Lienhard: 📱Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/juddlienhard/ 📺 YouTube: @JuddLienhard 📖 Substack: https://substack.com/@juddlienhard 🌐 Website: https://www.juddlienhard.com/ This episode is brought to you by David Protein David Protein has the highest protein-to-calorie ratio of any leading bar in the market. In this episode, Judd explains why total body training may be one of the best workout splits for men over 40, busy adults, and anyone struggling with recovery. For years, Judd trained like someone chasing maximum performance: heavy lifting, sprinting, jumping, high training volume, and pushing through everything. Eventually, his body stopped cooperating. After years of intense training, combined with lifestyle factors, inflammation, injuries, and the realities of aging, Judd reached a point where training harder was no longer making him healthier. Instead of giving up strength, he completely rethought the way he trains. In this episode, Judd answers one of the biggest questions in fitness: If your goal is simply to become as fit, athletic, healthy, and capable as possible, what should your week actually look like? Rather than chasing trends or specializing in one physical quality, Judd lays out a practical blueprint that balances strength, hypertrophy, power, metabolic conditioning, aerobic fitness, mobility, and recovery into one sustainable weekly program. Most lifters are actually training for strength endurance, not absolute strength... and that's why they eventually hit frustrating plateaus. In this episode, Judd explains one of the biggest misconceptions in modern fitness: lifting weights doesn't automatically make you strong. The way you organize your sets, reps, intensity, fatigue, and recovery determines the adaptation your body develops. If your workouts primarily consist of higher-rep sets, excessive volume, and constant fatigue, your body becomes better at producing moderate force repeatedly, not generating maximum force when it matters most. Train smarter, move better, perform like an athlete again. In this episode of the Judd Lienhard Podcast, Judd answers another round of listener questions covering one of the most misunderstood topics in fitness: how much training is actually enough? While social media has made minimalist workouts incredibly popular, Judd explains why the answer isn't as simple as "less is more." He breaks down the relationship between training volume, frequency, intensity, and strength gains, explaining why beginners, intermediate lifters, and advanced athletes all require different approaches. While there is absolutely a point of diminishing returns, Judd argues that many people have swung too far in the opposite direction, believing they can maximize strength and muscle with the absolute minimum amount of work. 📲 Try my training app with a FREE 7-day trial: 👉 https://www.juddlienhard.com/ Get immediate access to over a year’s worth of structured programming, including leg-focused, full body, bodyweight, minimal-equipment, and strength-focused workouts—built around the same principles you see in this video. 💪 Judd's resistance bands: https://www.juddlienhard.com/product/resistance-bands-4-band-multi-pack ⏱ TIMESTAMPS: 00:00:00 Introduction 00:00:43 Does training get easier after 40? 00:02:28 Can 30-minute workouts actually build strength? 00:03:45 How training age changes your results 00:05:10 The ideal weekly training volume for muscle growth 00:06:08 Why fitness minimalism has gone too far 00:07:01 What Judd would tell his 25-year-old self 00:07:40 Mobility mistakes that lead to injuries 00:08:08 Why sprinting should never disappear from your program 00:08:45 The conditioning work Judd wishes he had done sooner 00:09:11 The Two-Five Method for beginner strength training 00:10:15 The five movement patterns everyone should train 00:11:40 Why women should lift heavier weights 00:12:45 How to structure supersets for strength 00:13:40 Why isolation exercises belong at the end 00:15:26 Are there exercises people should stop doing? 00:16:00 Why back squats aren't right for everyone 00:16:40 Better alternatives to forward lunges 00:18:24 The fitness metrics people obsess over too much 00:19:05 When strength stops being the priority 00:20:30 Why body fat doesn't define athleticism 00:21:55 Deadlifts vs. squats for back pain 00:24:10 Walking mechanics that improve your knees and hips 00:25:30 Why your feet should point mostly forward 00:26:20 How proper foot mechanics strengthen your arches 00:27:15 The connection between walking, glutes, and knee pain 00:29:18 Final thoughts This episode is brought to you by David Protein David Protein has the highest protein-to-calorie ratio of any leading bar in the market.
