In February 1964, Vincent Gaddis published "The Deadly Bermuda Triangle" in Argosy magazine. He picked three points on a map, drew the lines, and turned a pile of unrelated disappearances into a shape. People have been drawing triangles on maps ever since. The shapes were drawn by writers. In January 1973, CIA Director Richard Helms gave a verbal order and the MKULTRA files went into an incinerator. Nobody wrote the order down. Four years later, a clerk's unexplained filing decision surfaced seven boxes at a records center outside Washington. Eight thousand pages, all of it accounting. Trolls. Are they real? In 1244, armed men riding across a windswept ridge in Iceland met something in the road that stopped and let them stare, and the account gives us three words in Old Norse: tröll eitt mikit. A great troll. Then it moves on, like a monster in the road was barely worth the ink. In 1982, a backhoe operator clearing a Florida peat pond pulled up a 7,000-year-old human skull. He had found Windover Bog, and 167 more people were down there with him. Ninety-one of them still had their brains. They belonged to a lost ancient civilization that vanished from Florida with no name, no written language, and no explanation.
