  1. DnD Locations: Deep Imaskar from Roll for Lore, opens in a new tab

    Aug 31, 20261 hr 12 min

The Imaskari built the greatest magical empire in the history of Toril, and then they did something so monstrous that it took their victims' gods four thousand years to make them pay for it. This episode traces the full arc of Imaskar, from a fertile basin in −8350 DR to the dust desert it is today. We cover the Lord Artificers who ruled without gods, the portal network that let them conquer a continent by stepping through walls, and the kobold kingdom they erased using golems built specifically for the job. We get into the plague that drove out their priests, and the decision that doomed them: Lord Artificer Khotan opening a gate to a world without magic and dragging back hundreds of thousands of people who would become the Mulan. Then we go underground. Deep Imaskar, the City of the Great Seal, where one wizard-lord's household hid for nearly four millennia behind a ward so powerful it convinced all of Faerûn they were extinct. We cover the necromancer coup, Chaschara's revolution, the invasion that came through their own portal, and the Elder Evil Pandorym, waiting inside a demiplane that the merchants of Vaelan were quietly mining and selling as luxury prosthetic limbs. And we finish in the present, because the new Unearthed Arcana playtest brings the Deep Imaskari back with the Path of Unlight barbarian and the Imaskarcanist wizard, and this time they intend to conquer the Underdark. Sources include Lost Empires of Faerûn, Underdark, The Grand History of the Realms, and Bruce R. Cordell's Darkvision. 3. DnD Gods: Wee Jas from Roll for Lore, opens in a new tab

    Aug 17, 20261 hr 10 min

She's been in print since 1983. She made it into the 3rd Edition Player's Handbook deity list. She survived the Edition Wars and she's still in the current game. And if you asked a hundred D&D players to tell you one thing about her, most of them couldn't. This week Jess drags Wee Jas out of the Greyhawk footnotes and makes the case that the goddess of magic, death, vanity, and law is one of the most underused deities in the entire game. On paper those four portfolios look like a grab bag. In practice they're all the same thing: preservation. Knowledge, precedent, souls, and faces — Wee Jas is the goddess who doesn't let things rot. To get there we have to talk about the Suel Imperium, a mage-ruled empire with slave labor, engineered peoples, and a sixty-three year war it could not win. We cover the Invoked Devastation and the Rain of Colorless Fire, including Gary Gygax's own descriptions of both from a Q&A in Paul J. Stormberg's Oerth Journal — material that never made it into a sourcebook. Then the aftermath: a goddess whose worshippers essentially prayed a death portfolio onto her because nobody else was left to tend the dead. Plus the Ruby Church and its hospice work, the Ruby Knight Vindicator prestige class, her stance on necromancy (consent matters), her rivalry with Nerull, and a very long detour into the battle cubes of Acheron. Wee Jas, Greyhawk deities, D&D gods, Suel Imperium, Suloise, Baklunish, Rain of Colorless Fire, Invoked Devastation, Nerull, Ruby Knight Vindicator, Acheron, Oerth, Gary Gygax, Oerth Journal, Dragon Magazine 350, Core Beliefs, D&D death gods, necromancy in D&D, goddess of magic, Dungeons and Dragons lore podcast, Greyhawk lore, D&D pantheon, prestige classes, 3.5 edition, D&D history Hosted on Acast. 4. DnD Demigods: Cthulhu from Roll for Lore, opens in a new tab

    Aug 10, 20261 hr 5 min

Grab your Elder Sign, because Sean and Jess are diving into the sleeping god at the bottom of the ocean: Cthulhu. This one goes way past the tentacle face. Sean breaks down what a Great Old One actually is (older, weirder, and far more indifferent than any demon), why the Elder Gods sealed these things away instead of killing them, and how Cthulhu ended up dreaming in the drowned city of R'lyeh. Then it's on to the man himself, H.P. Lovecraft: the sickly Providence recluse who fired off a hundred thousand letters, ghostwrote Houdini's autobiography, and died broke and unknown in 1937 with no clue he'd become the backbone of modern horror. From there Sean traces fifty years of Cthulhu creeping through Dungeons & Dragons, from a throwaway line in the 1975 gate spell, to Rob Kuntz statting him up in Dragon #12, to the infamous Deities & Demigods printing that caught a cease and desist, all the way to his 2026 turn as a full Darklord in Ravenloft: The Horrors Within. Plus the conversation nobody skips: Lovecraft's racism, and how you reckon with art that grew way bigger than the person who made it. Come for the squid god, stay for Jess deciding whether Cthulhu even belongs in D&D at all. Want to pick our next topic or hang in the most active Discord in D&D? 5. DnD Heroes: Bigby from Roll for Lore, opens in a new tab

    Aug 3, 20261 hr 14 min

You have said Bigby's name out loud at a table. You have pointed at a monster, squeezed it with a giant spectral fist, and felt powerful doing it. But do you actually know the man behind the hand? Probably not... and he is so much weirder than the spell. This week we dig into Bigby, the most powerful anxious person in the history of Greyhawk. We trace him from his origins as a throwaway evil NPC (created in 1973 by Rob Kuntz, not Gary Gygax, for once) all the way to his current existence as a gnome. Along the way: the bumblebee sigil nobody can explain, his career as an exceedingly picky eater, and how "Bigby, Riggby, and Zigby" quietly solves the fifty-year mystery of where his name actually came from. We cover the famous hand spells, the founding of the Circle of Eight and its refusal to ever let the good guys win, the fake merchant cover identity, the death at the hands of a frost giant, and the reincarnation that turned the most famous wizard in D&D into a gnome who does not buy his best friend's excuse for one second. From Oerth to Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants, this is the full story of a name in a spellbook who finally got a life. Plus the AI art controversy nobody asked for. You know the spell. Come meet the man. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

  7. DnD Locations: Feywild EPISODE 100 from Roll for Lore, opens in a new tab

    Jul 20, 20261 hr 7 min

One hundred episodes deep, and we finally set foot in the Feywild. Welcome to the Plane of Faerie, a warped mirror of the Material Plane where the colors run too bright, the emotions run too hot, and a single night of dancing can cost you a decade of your life. In our 100th episode, Sean and Jess trace the Feywild from its earliest D&D roots through its modern 5e form. We break down the great fey courts: Titania and the Summer Court on the Seelie side, and the Queen of Air and Darkness ruling the Gloaming Court for the Unseelie. We get into the Archfey themselves, the eladrin and their seasonal moods, and the sheer variety of fey that call this plane home, from harmless pixies and sprites to redcaps, quicklings, and the truly nasty hags lurking in the deep woods. We also wander into the Domains of Delight, those pocket realms ruled by individual Archfey, and talk about why the Feywild remains one of the most dangerous places in the multiverse precisely because it looks so beautiful. Time distortion, stolen memories, bargains you should never have made. It is all here. Thank you for a hundred episodes of monsters, planes, and Forgotten Realms lore. This one is for the community that got us here. Grab your iron, mind your manners, and never eat the food. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

  8. DnD Planes: The Shadowfell from Roll for Lore, opens in a new tab

    Jul 13, 20261 hr 20 min

Grab a torch... it won't help, but grab one anyway. This week Sean and Jess drag Roll for Lore into the Shadowfell, Dungeons & Dragons' gloomy echo of the Material Plane, where the sky is a black vault, the food bleeds, and despair has actual game mechanics. We trace the plane's whole history: how Jeff Grubb's 1987 Demiplane of Shadow footnote became 4th edition's Shadowfell, and how, in Forgotten Realms canon, the goddess Shar helped Cyric murder Mystra, kicked off the Spellplague, lost everything anyway, and built the plane as a consolation prize. Then it's a full 5e travel guide (Gloomwrought, Evernight, shadow crossings, and the despair rules), the truth about where Strahd and Barovia actually live inside the Domains of Dread, fifty years of shadow spells from the 1975 illusionist to shadow blade, and a bestiary of the plane's greatest nightmares: the shadar-kai, the Raven Queen, sorrowsworn, nightwalkers, banderhobbs, and Shimmergloom the shadow dragon. Whether you're prepping a Curse of Strahd campaign or just here for deep D&D lore, this one's for you. Follow Roll for Lore wherever you get your podcasts. Hosted on Acast. 9. DnD Villains: Glasya from Roll for Lore, opens in a new tab

    Jul 6, 20261 hr 3 min

She's Asmodeus's least obedient daughter, a criminal mastermind he promoted just to shut her up — and it didn't work. This episode we're breaking down Glasya , Archduchess of Malbolge and Princess of the Nine Hells, and Sean's newest crush. from her obscure 1983 debut in Dragon #75 to her defining arc in Fiendish Codex II: Tyrants of the Nine Hells . We cover her murdered mother Bensozia, her decades-long vendetta against Levistus (Stygia's ice-bound "Prince"), and the two wildly different stories of how that murder actually went down. Then we dig into the Reckoning : the civil war Glasya allegedly started with nothing but forged rumors and a talent for manipulation — pitting Mephistopheles, Baalzebul, and half of Hell's ruling archdevils against each other while she walked away clean. We also unpack how she took Malbolge from the Hag Countess (whose literal corpse became the layer itself — towers made of fingers, lakes of bile, the whole nightmare), why her cults thrive among the oppressed despite her being Lawful Evil, and what her Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes tiefling bloodline means for your 5e game. In this episode: Glasya's stats, powers, and combat tactics (spoiler: she never fights fair) Her origins in Goetic demonology and Gary Gygax's original Dragon Magazine lore The Bensozia murder mystery — two versions, one dead queen The Reckoning: how one archdevil weaponized gossip into a full-blown war How Malbolge became a literal corpse-kingdom Using Glasya's cults and politics in your own D&D campaign Perfect for D&D lore fans, Dungeon Master's prepping Nine Hells content, and anyone who's ever wanted an infernal soap opera with actual receipts. 10. DnD Locations: Skullport from Roll for Lore, opens in a new tab

    Jun 29, 20261 hr 26 min

Directly beneath the gleaming streets of Waterdeep, past a mile and a half of solid rock and very bad decisions, sits the most wretched city in the Forgotten Realms. No laws. No government. No sunlight. Just pirates, slavers, illithids, drow factions who hate each other, a beholder crime lord who does most of his business without ever showing up in person, a renegade illithid who has decided to worship the god of knowledge, an aboleth running a spy ring through the sewer pipes on behalf of a kraken who is trying to become a god, and twelve floating flaming skulls who will absolutely kill you if you start a fire or try to impose a tariff. Welcome to Skullport. This week Sean and Jess dig into one of the Forgotten Realms' most unhinged locations, the Port of Shadows, using the 1999 AD&D 2nd Edition sourcebook as their bible. They cover the whole thing: the ancient Netherese mages who accidentally became disembodied skull wizards when Netheril fell, the thousand-year-old necromancer who showed up uninvited and built a city around them in under three decades, the slave economy that somehow requires more logistical sophistication than most legitimate port cities, the five Iron Ring members who hate each other but have agreed that a bigger pie is worth the occasional assassination attempt, and the deeply codependent relationship between Skullport and the city of splendors directly above it that absolutely does not want to talk about any of this. Plus the chaos frog demon who caved the ceiling in and the goddess murder that finished the job. It's a love letter to one of the most creative, deeply cursed settings TSR ever put to paper. 12. DnD Creatures: Merfolk & Tritons from Roll for Lore, opens in a new tab

    Jun 15, 20261 hr 14 min

https://www.patreon.com/cw/RollForLore Take a deep breath and grab your trident... this week on Roll for Lore, Sean and Jess head underwater to cover two of the Forgotten Realms' most criminally underused races: merfolk and tritons. We're talking full lore breakdown, from their first appearance way back in the original Monster Manual all the way through to their modern 5e treatment as both monsters and playable races. We dig into their gods first, because the sea pantheon is way more dramatic than people realize. Eadro, the merfolk and locathah creator deity, leads a coalition of good and neutral aquatic gods called the asathalfinare... and they're locked in an eternal cold war against Panzuriel, a kraken-god backing the sahuagin and their shark-toothed nightmares. Tritons get their own divine champion too, Persana, who's basically the sea's answer to a paladin order. We trace how this rivalry plays out across the Sea of Fallen Stars and the sunken city of Myth Nantar, one of the coolest underwater locations the Realms has ever produced. From there we get into the stats and crunch... how merfolk show up as a low-CR humanoid with that classic amphibious trait and a spear, while tritons evolved from a Princes of the Apocalypse era ally race into a full playable option with elemental resistance and a serious grudge against demons. We talk plotlines too: elemental cults stirring up trouble in the depths, sahuagin raids on merfolk settlements, and how tritons ended up as frontline defenders against the Elemental Chaos itself. 13. DND Monsters: Demons Part 1 from Roll for Lore, opens in a new tab

    Jun 8, 202659 min

We are kicking off a deep dive into the Abyss and honestly... we don't even know where to start because the Abyss is massive and deeply unhinged. So we're doing what any reasonable lore nerds would do, we're going in challenge rating order and starting at the bottom. And the bottom of the demonic food chain is a wild and strange place to be. This episode is all about the low CR demons, the weird funky little guys that don't get talked about enough. We're talking manes, the pitiful miserable bottom rung of demon society... dretches, which are basically just clouds of suffering with legs... quasits, the sneaky little imps of the Abyss... and more. These aren't the flashy demon lords, these aren't the ones with cool names and big campaigns built around them. These are the ones that make the Abyss feel genuinely alien and gross and wrong in a way that honestly slaps. Sean and Jess dig into where these things come from, what they actually are in the lore, how they've changed across editions, and why the bottom tier of demonkind might just be the most interesting part of the whole hierarchy. Buckle up because it gets weird. Jun 1, 20261 hr 28 min

Werewolves, werebears, wererats, wereravens, and the gods who fight over them. We dig into lycanthropes across the D&D multiverse and the lore is way deeper than you think. We cover Strahd's werewolf pack in Curse of Strahd and the wereraven Keepers of the Feather quietly resisting him. We get into Eberron and the Silver Flame's lycanthropic purge, the shifter genocide that followed, and the Pure Flame zealots still hunting today. We talk about the Forgotten Realms and the eternal war between Selûne and Malar over what lycanthropy was meant to be. Plus we tell you who the most famous werebear in all of D&D is. 15. DnD: The Underdark from Roll for Lore, opens in a new tab

    May 25, 20261 hr 16 min

Strap on your torches (and maybe a few extra) because this week we're descending into the Underdark, the sprawling network of caverns, tunnels, and lightless cities buried beneath the surface of the Forgotten Realms. From the drow of Menzoberranzan to the mind flayers, beholders, and the horrors lurking in the dark, the Underdark is home to some of the most iconic monsters and most brutal adventures in Dungeons & Dragons history. We dig into the origins of the Underdark, how it evolved across D&D editions, the deadly ecosystems and societies that thrive without sunlight, and why this setting has captured the imaginations of players for decades. Whether you're a longtime Dungeon Master plotting your party's doom or a curious newcomer wondering what's down there, this episode is your guide to the deep. 16. DnD Locations: THE ABYSS from Roll for Lore, opens in a new tab

    May 18, 20261 hr 0 min

The Abyss is the infinite chaotic evil plane of Dungeons & Dragons — home to demon lords, the Blood War, and 50 years of D&D lore that has grown weirder with every edition. In this episode we map out the essential reading list (from 1977's Monster Manual through 2006's Fiendish Codex I to 2018's Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes), explain the demon hierarchy from larvae and dretches up to balors and demon lords, and break down what demons actually want — which turns out to be less "conquest" and more "metaphysical infection." We tour iconic layers including Pazunia and its iron fortresses, Demogorgon's Gaping Maw, Baphomet's shifting Endless Maze, Orcus's frozen palace city of Naratyr on Thanatos, Graz'zt's deceptively hospitable Azzagrat, and the corpse-cathedrals of Zionyn where the obyrith Obox-ob broods over losing his title as the original Prince of Demons. Plus: the Blood War, the obyrith backstory, and why the Abyss can never have a real king. 17. DnD: Drow Dragons, Shadow Dragons, Deep Dragons and the Jaezred Chaulssin from Roll for Lore, opens in a new tab

    May 11, 20261 hr 18 min

What happens when you cross a drow with a dragon? You get one of the most criminally overlooked corners of Forgotten Realms lore — and one of the wildest stories in the entire Underdark. This week on [Show Name], Sean and Jess dive deep into the Drow-Dragon: a creature born from centuries of slavery, shadow magic, and a rebellion so brutal it reshaped drow society forever. We start with the basics — what is a Deep Dragon, why do they hate the drow they pretend to ally with, and how did the term "drow-dragon" first appear in Dragon Magazine #206 back in 1994? Then we crack open Eric L. Boyd's 2007 free web enhancement City of Wyrmshadows (yes, it's still out there, and yes, it's a goldmine) to tell the full story of Chaulssin, the City of Wyrmshadows — a drow city conquered by Clan Jaezred shadow dragons in 221 DR and held in chains for over 800 years. From there it gets unhinged: the rise of the zekylyn half-dragons, the slave rebellion of 634 DR, the malaugrym shapeshifter infiltration, the founding of House Jaezred, and the eventual creation of the Jaezred Chaulssin — a secret patriarchal assassins' guild dedicated to tearing down Lolth's matriarchy one city at a time. We cover the destruction of Ched Nasad, the Silence of Lolth, and the shadow dragon Shimmergloom's conquest of Mithral Hall (yes, that Mithral Hall — Bruenor Battlehammer's home). In this episode: What is a Deep Dragon? Lore, abilities, and shapeshifting powers The two types of Drow-Dragon: Deep Lineage vs. Shadow Lineage The fall of Chaulssin and the rise of the zekylyn The Jaezred Chaulssin: D&D's most patient assassins' guild Shimmergloom and the fall of Mithral Hall How to use drow-dragons in your 5e campaign Whether you're a Dungeon Master hunting for your next BBEG, a Drizzt Do'Urden fan curious about the lore behind Streams of Silver , or just here for cursed Underdark politics, this one's for you. 19. DnD Monsters: Centaurs from Roll for Lore, opens in a new tab

    Apr 27, 202653 min

From the wedding brawl that ended up carved on the Parthenon to the forests of the Forgotten Realms, centaurs have one of the richest histories in both real-world mythology and Dungeons & Dragons. In this episode we dig into all of it. We start at the source — ancient Greece, where centaurs weren't just "horse people" but a philosophical argument about civilization versus savagery. We break down the Centauromachy, the infamous wedding battle between the Lapiths and the centaurs that became one of the defining myths of the ancient world, and introduce every major player: Pirithous, Theseus, Caeneus the warrior who couldn't be killed by any blade, and the centaurs who crashed the feast and paid for it. We also talk about Chiron — the great exception, the wise mentor who tutored Achilles and Jason and became the template for every sage teacher in fantasy fiction. Then we trace centaurs through the full history of D&D — from their appearance in the original 1974 White Box all the way through 2nd Edition, covering every sourcebook, supplement, and Dragon Magazine appearance along the way. We get into their lore in the Forgotten Realms: where they live, how their tribal societies work, their complicated relationship with elves, and the surprisingly interesting detail that their own god Skerrit exists and they mostly just... don't call him. And we talk about Timoth Eyesbright — the good-hearted centaur adventurer from the 1988 DC Comics AD&D series who became one of the most fully-realized centaur characters in Forgotten Realms canon, including his four-issue showdown with Xanathar the Beholder crime lord of Waterdeep in the Catspaw arc. Topics covered: centaur mythology, Greek mythology, the Centauromachy, Chiron, Lapiths, D&D monster history, Forgotten Realms lore, centaur society 5e, Skerrit, Cormanthor, the High Forest, the Shaar, DC Comics AD&D, Timoth Eyesbright, Xanathar, Waterdeep Great for: D&D players and DMs, Forgotten Realms fans, mythology nerds, anyone who wants to run a centaur NPC or PC that actually feels real. Apr 20, 20261 hr 34 min

She is chaos incarnate. She is the web that holds an entire civilization in its grip. She is the reason the Underdark trembles — and she wants it that way. In this episode of Roll for Lore, Sean and Jessica descend into the Demonweb Pits to explore one of the most iconic, terrifying, and endlessly fascinating figures in all of Dungeons & Dragons: Lolth, the Spider Queen . Before she was the Demon Queen of Spiders, she was Araushnee — a goddess of the Seldarine, consort to Corellon Larethian himself, and patron of fate and artisans among the elven pantheon. So how does a goddess of such standing end up ruling the 66th layer of the Abyss, commanding an army of drow, driders, and demons, and becoming the single most destabilizing force in Faerûn's history? That fall — and everything that came after — is the story of one of D&D's greatest villains. We trace Lolth's origins from her betrayal of Corellon during the Crown Wars, through her banishment to the Abyss and her transformation into the Spider Queen, all the way to her role in shaping the brutal matriarchal society of the drow and her apotheosis into a greater goddess during the War of the Spider Queen . We also dig into her complicated divine family — her daughter Eilistraee, who opposes everything she stands for, and her son Vhaeraun, the Masked Lord — and explore the Dark Seldarine, the fractious drow pantheon she rules through fear and manipulation. Whether you're a Dungeon Master building a drow-themed campaign, a player whose character has a history in Menzoberranzan, or just a lore lover who wants to understand the goddess behind one of D&D's most iconic villains, this episode pulls back the web and shows you what's underneath.
