    Aug 15, 202636 min

--- After years away from professional music, I went to a jam session bar in Tokyo for the first time. Everyone was warm and welcoming. I played Beatles songs with strangers and had a great time. And on the way home, I felt frustrated. I thought I had let go of my pride as a musician. I hadn't. This is a 36-minute solo episode about frustration, and why I think it might not be a bad feeling to have. Especially when you are learning a language. 3. One Story, Two Ways: Casual and Polite Japanese (ft. Shun) from Okkei Japanese Podcast, opens in a new tab

    Aug 8, 202620 min

Hear the same story twice. Once with a close friend, once with someone from work. This time Shun joins me, and we tell two real stories in casual Japanese first, then in polite Japanese. The first one is about a friend whose marriage is falling apart. The second one is about the time my eye hurt for a week, and what the doctor found. The casual version has zero control. This is how we actually talk with a close friend. You don't need to catch every word. Notice how the vocabulary and the grammar change, and also what we choose to say. With a friend you can just say "dasa" (that's lame). With a coworker you say "shinpai desu ne" (that sounds worrying). 👇Learn N5 Immersion Program https://www.okkeijapanese.com/n5-program/ 👉Get the transcripts with furigana on Okkei Japanese website https://www.okkeijapanese.com/ 🔘Hi. I just stroll through Honmoku Sancho Park, look at the seasonal Koinobori (carp streamers), and pass by an old American diner.
