The Camera Life

Jonas is a German-born, Melbourne-raised photographer with a strong desire for exploration and travel. That sense of adventure first led him to pick up a camera around 10 years ago, documenting the places, experiences and outings he encountered along the way. Initially drawn to landscape photography, his work has gradually expanded into cityscapes, portraits and the small candid moments he finds interesting or beautiful. His love for photography has always been focused on the process. Regardless of the subject, Jonas enjoys being able to capture and document the world as he sees it. Sharing his work through social media is a great bonus, but it has never been his main motivation. Visiting new places, cities, countries and landmarks continues to be a major source of inspiration, and photographing his travels remains one of his greatest passions. Just as importantly, many of his favourite photographs have been taken closer to home, revisiting familiar parts of Melbourne and finding new ways to see them. Photography has given Jonas a much deeper appreciation for how beautiful the world can be in so many different ways. Doug Porter is an Australian photographic artist whose creative journey spans more than six decades. After leaving Art College at 17, where he studied drawing, painting and printmaking, Doug began his career in a professional photographic laboratory in 1964. Over the following 51 years, he worked alongside and printed for some of Australia’s finest photographers, including Athol Shmith, Wolfgang Sievers, Robert Imhoff and Ian McKenzie, eventually spending 38 years as Commercial Production Manager at Bond Imaging. The arrival of digital imaging transformed Doug’s creative world, sparking an enduring passion for Photoshop and the possibilities of digital post-production. After returning seriously to photography following a trip to Italy in 2006, he established Fresco Images – Doug Porter Imagery Australia. Today, Doug is particularly drawn to creating narrative artworks from multiple photographs. He approaches each piece as a blank canvas, using only his own imagery and allowing the work to evolve organically without presets or AI-generated content. For Doug, the photograph is often simply the starting point—a sketch from which the final artwork emerges. Cats or dogs. It's the oldest argument going, but tonight we're actually settling it as photographers. Greg's a cat person. Justin's a dog person. And it turns out the two animals are completely different to shoot. Dogs give you everything, eye contact, expression, they'll hold a look and they actually want to please the camera. Cats give you nothing on purpose. You have to wait and steal the moment when it happens, a bit like street photography with claws. So the real question underneath all the tribal stuff is this. Do you prefer a subject that performs for you, or one you have to catch? We go back and forth on it, drag in some real pet shoot footage, and let the live chat pick a side.

John has worked for four decades as a professional freelance photographer and writer, contributing to magazines around the world and producing work for major brands in the adventure sports and travel industries. Many of these clients retained his services for more than 25 years, reflecting the long-standing relationships he built throughout his career. Alongside his freelance work, he spent two decades as Picture Editor and staff photographer for a leading winter sports magazine. While much of his photography has been created in high mountain environments, assignments for cycling companies and other clients have also taken him around the world, providing opportunities to produce personal work for exhibition.
