The dog days are over! It's September and Juan Soto is back. Oh, it's so good to see him. He is being delusional and he is wearing a Lisa Frank-style multi-hued neon leopard-print cap. Diva! This week on Hits Different, Dave and Kait say farewell to Luis Robert Jr. and welcome back to Swaggy V, who, as you may recall, conveniently broke his hand 1 week before the trade deadline. Our Mets! We're going to miss them so much. But WHO will be rooting for in the play-offs? We have some initial feelings but actually, I think we're open to pitches from the audience. We're without Dave this week, so it took 10 tries to turn the microphones on. Next week we'll be without Ellen, but plus Dave, and I'm sure we'll struggle with something else (probably our senses of style and joie de vivre). Apologies for the lateness of this pod, we had a small communication problem and Producer Nathan was unable to get into the files for several days. For my (Kait's) part, I have no idea what was discussed as I was out of town attending a gorgeous wedding in New Hampshire (with Producer Nathan and his cohort of North Carolina athletes). I'm going to guess Carson Benge was mentioned (angel!!) and Dave says there was discussion of Nate Lavender's warm-up song "Lavender Haze." I have no idea whether Ellen was brave enough to eat day-old "San Diego" themed fish taco egg roll. I can't wait to listen and find out!! Short one because they missed me, I assume. These Mets are not the same Mets they were a week ago—we have any number of random men to meet and to visit on David's Hometown Dates. Also, now that their season is so decidedly in the toilet, the Mets are stress-free, living large, and having a great time. BRETT BATY FIRST CAREER GRAND SLAM. Ellen, Kait, and Dave vaguely recap two weeks of baseball and discuss the Mets' new closer Kodai Senga, their new power-hitter Luis Torrens, and the semi-cancellation of a Mets prospect who briefly forgot about David Wright. No egg rolls were eaten in the past two weeks while we were on vacation, but Kait had about 500 croquettes in España, where she met just one person in a Mets hat and he didn't seem to know what the Mets were (the colors simply matched his barista uniform). The Mets won two games in Atlanta, both of which were normal. Then they came home and lost a game to Kansas City in a way that was perfectly normal. "When you meet a girl you don't start kissing her right away"—how many people talk about their relationships with their married coworkers. Dave, Ellen, and Kait are back in the regular studio (different room of Kait's apartment) and talking about the upcoming trade deadline (eek!) and the new Women's Professional Baseball League (sick!!). This week on Hits Different: We didn't know that Carlos Mendoza was going to be fired when we recorded!!! So we don't talk about that. Instead, Ellen, Dave, and Kait discuss the first time that every member of the Mets infield committed at least one error in the same game since 1962. A wonderful historical achievement. The Mets also gave up more than 50 runs in a week, allowed Bryce Harper to hit for the cycle, watched Kyle Schwarber hit 3 bombs in an hour, and raised Dansby Swanson's OPS by 60 points in four days. Mark "Swaggy V" Vientos responded to criticism by saying "I have to give myself props." The Mets have been out west in the SNOW. They've scored some runs but they've also entered a "fluid" shortstop situation. They've decided not to fire their manager, but this announcement has done nothing to tamp down the utterly hysterical discourse about whether they should fire their manager. This week on Hits Different, we're talking about the Amazins' amazing 12-game losing streak, their longest since 2002. On Wednesday night, the streak finally ended, but at what cost? Francisco Lindor is now in a walking boot due to a calf strain so severe that he refuses to even look at the imaging. He hasn't looked down at his leg at all, actually. He doesn't want to know!!! How are you feeling about the Mets? It's sort of a weird time, because of course we all saw a Baty Bomb (not discussed in this episode) on Thursday night, but we also saw Craig Kimbrel. We saw the streak end, but it was with two narrow victories over a team that (with respect) has no aspirations to accomplish anything this year. We saw Francisco Lindor wince and we screamed. The one thing we are sure about is that the Minnesota-themed Hot Dish egg roll was GREAT. Two thumbs up. Ellen's most enthusiastic review so far (out of the two she has done).
