This week on the Animal Communication Podcast, we sat down with Day Schildkret, author of Hello, Goodbye: 75 Rituals for Times of Loss, Celebration, and Change and creator of Morning Altars, to explore why ritual matters so deeply, especially when we're grieving a pet. Day drew a clear line between routine and ritual: routine moves us from one point to the next, while ritual exists to make the unseen seen and to transform our relationship to what we're going through. We talked about grief as something we get under rather than get over, how our culture has grown "grief illiterate" in its rush back to normal after loss, and how ritual can hold us safely enough to let buried feelings finally surface.The conversation closed on relationships as the true heart of ritual, since ritual's deepest function is remembering, gathering our scattered attention back to what and who we cherish. Day reminded us that it's never too late to create a ritual for an old, unmarked loss, even one from decades ago, and that something as simple as a date on the calendar can become an annual doorway back to a beloved animal. This week, we flip the mic around and welcome someone who usually stays behind the scenes: Tony, our audio editor for the past three seasons and over 100 episodes. Tony has spent every week listening closely, smoothing out our ums and coughs, and turning our conversations into the show you hear. In this episode, we finally get to know the person doing that work. Tony shares how he found his way here: a decade behind the bar in the restaurant industry, a growing obsession with podcasts as an escape during long prep shifts, a broadcasting program, and eventually a connection through the Empower Network that led him to Diane and Tina at MindBodySpirit.fm. Tech was never the intimidating part for him, he tells us; being on camera is what makes him nervous. From there, the conversation opens into everything Tony has absorbed from the other side of the editing booth: the recurring theme of animals carrying people through hard times, the tenderness in how our audience finds comfort in "the woo," and the mix of inspiring and humbling moments that come with meeting people's heroes. We dig into a question Tony has wondered about for a while: the difference in cognition between domesticated and wild animals. Each of us weighs in with our own take, touching on boundaries, communication styles, and the deeper soul-level reasons animals choose to enter our lives. The conversation moves through animals in storytelling (Redwall, Homeward Bound, Timbuktu, and the shared trauma of "does the dog die?"), our favorite guests and most meaningful episodes over the seasons, and a joyful detour into dog breeds, herding instincts, and a Border Collie story from Tony's own life that captures just how much intelligence and personality animals bring to their play. We close by turning the spotlight back on Tony's role. In this episode, we take a journey through the ancient Wheel of the Year, exploring the solstices, equinoxes, and the lesser-known cross-quarter days (Imbolc, Beltane, Lughnasadh, and Samhain) that ancient cultures across the globe have honored since long before recorded history. We trace how many of today's religious holidays, from Christmas to Halloween, have roots in these earth-based, solar celebrations, and reflect on what gets lost and gained when sacred cyclical wisdom gets absorbed into linear tradition. Karen brings in the lens of traditional Chinese medicine, describing the solstices and equinoxes as the "cosmic breathing of the earth" and unpacking how our elemental natures (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) tie us to the seasons in deeply personal ways; we even find out Julie's element live on air. Meredith shares her own complicated relationship with fire and the fear she's working to transform into reverence, while Julie reflects on the years she spent in Alaska, where telling time by the solstice and the blooming of fireweed was simply a way of life. We talk about the mythic battle between the Oak King and the Holly King, the balance of light and dark, and how the animals in our lives never lost their connection to these cycles, even as we did. Something stirred in the fall of 2024, and many of us felt it without having a name for it. In this return conversation with Kara Daniels, founder of Deep Root Connections, we find the shape of what that was. Kara brings us the story of Gaia's upgrade: not an abandonment, not a disappearance, but the same beloved Earth Goddess stepping into a higher-frequency version of herself - younger, spunkier, and ready to shake things up - because the old cycle was complete and a new one had begun. What unfolds from there takes us deep: into Earth dragons reawakening after centuries of dormancy, carrying original creation codes in their bodies; into fairies and star beings collaborating with our animals in the afterlife to experiment with light codes and weave the blueprints for new species into physical reality; and into the surprisingly accessible ways all of us can begin receiving those codes right now, through sunrise, bare feet on soil, a hand on a tree. We also talk about fire as an ecosystem, as grief, and as a portal. And we go somewhere unexpected and important: the shame many of us carry around reclaiming a relationship with nature, and the wisdom the trees themselves offer in response. This is a conversation about what is waking up, what is being rewoven, and why communicating with nature, as the trees told Kara, is everyone's birthright. This week we're asking the question that we’re passionate about: why does animal communication matter right now, in this moment, in this world? Not as a curiosity, and never as a party trick, but as something sacred and necessary. Each of us comes to this work from a different place, so we start there, with our own why: Meredith's lifelong pull toward listening and counseling, now finding its fullest expression through the animals; Karen's story of being woken up again and again since a childhood encounter with a gorilla at the zoo, and how reconnecting with the animals got her out of bed on the hardest days; and Julie's experience of collective grief and unmooring since her dad's passing, and the sense that the animals aren't ignoring any of it, they're strengthening the invitation to come back. Karen shares what disconnection from animals and nature actually costs us physically and energetically, right down to the organs and meridians. Meredith traces the thread through mythology and folklore, and tells the story of a hummingbird in her backyard that reminded her that nature doesn't need to follow the rules we've built around it. We talk honestly about skepticism, what it means to ask someone for just a tiny thread of potential, and why "proof" might be a standard the collective is finally outgrowing. There's a detour into a lecture on the difference between knowledge, knowing, and wisdom, and how that maps onto Divine Feminine and Divine Masculine balance. And, of course, we come back to our own animals and what they're teaching us this season: Lukas asking Julie to rest, play, and trust more; Barnabas showing Meredith a whole new level of calm in the face of backyard chaos; and Karen's cats reflecting the steadiness she's finally found amid a big life transition. This week, Lora Lee Medley, founder of Moon Mojo Feline, intuitive animal communicator, and certified holistic cat practitioner, joins the podcast for a conversation that reminds us there are no bad cats, only cats responding to the energy around them. Lora Lee's own journey began with her cat Monty's kidney disease diagnosis, which led her to Reiki, and deepened through her cat Emmett's health struggles into crystal healing, herbalism, cat chakras, and animal communication, eventually training under Sylvie Sterlin to become a certified holistic cat practitioner working with the soul-level purpose, or archetype, each cat carries. In this episode of The Animal Communication Podcast, Julie, Karen, and Meredith sit down with Intuitive Katja Wostradowski, a long-time friend and colleague rooted in Nordic ancestry, now living and working in the Sacred Valley of Peru. Katja shares the extraordinary arc of her journey: growing up in atheist East Germany, where her natural sensitivity and deep connection to animals had no space to unfold; relocating to London for a career as a German teacher; and then following an inexplicable, years-long calling to South America that eventually led her to Bolivia and finally, to Peru. Along the way, she discovered the work of Danielle McKinnon, which helped her make sense of the intuitive awakening she was experiencing, and she began to understand how the land, the mountains, and the indigenous traditions of the Andes were alive and speaking to her. Katja opens up about the profound healing journey she undertook with her partners Roxana and Oscar - a process rooted in ancestral biography, Bach flowers, ritual, and the sacred medicine of cacao, and how her son's birth became the catalyst that cracked her open to her own depths. She also takes us into her life as an animal communicator and intuitive channel in the Sacred Valley: communicating with the corn, the pond, and the mountains in her garden; working with sacred cacao as a gentle bridge to the heart; and participating in a years-long series of collective healing fires aimed at reconciliation between cultures and the healing of ancestral wounds.
