Immersive personal stories and conversations about women's health. Overlooked is an award-winning women’s health podcast, hosted by journalist Golda Arthur. In this podcast, we ask, what has been most overlooked, and where is the inequality felt more deeply? The mission of Overlooked is to empower women by helping them advocate better for themselves, and we do this by featuring immersive personal storytelling, and in-depth conversations about women’s health. Overlooked began as a series about ovarian cancer, told through the story of Golda's mother, Teresa. After that first season, the show broadened its focus to look at other topics and stories about women's health, including menopause, endometriosis, motherhood, and survivorship.

There are many positive developments in cancer treatments right now, and the overall survival rate for cancer across the board is ticking upwards. But there’s a shadow here. Survivorship is overlooked, and it comes with its own weight, creating a range of challenges: difficulties that are emotional or physical, sexual or financial. In this episode, Golda talks to Dr Mercedes Castiel about the shadow of cancer survivroship, what 'quality of life' means after cancer treatment, and the kinds of resources survivors and caregivers need. This episode was recorded with a live audience at the Canadian Conference on Ovarian Cancer, organized by Ovarian Cancer Canada, and hosted by the Gynecologic Cancer Initiative at the University of British Columbia. It also features the experiences of three ovarian cancer survivors: Jackie Cherwenuk, Jenny Graham, and Leslie Fletcher. Gynecologic oncologist Dr. Kemi Doll explains how clinical guidelines built without Black women in mind, and decades of dismissed symptoms means that Black women are twice as likely to die of endometrial cancer. 'First Person Health' is a storytelling workshop, and this episode features two moving pieces from women who took the class: Patsy Day tells a devastating story about her stillborn child, and says that in the UK, "The underfunding of stillbirth research is a political act." Leah Wittenberg tells a visceral story about a stomach infection caused by H. pylori that caused complications and sepsis, an abdominal perforation and emergency surgery. First Person Health teaches women how to tell their story powerfully in sound. This is small-batch storytelling, so that each participant gets attention and support as they process their health experience. The last workshop for the year will take place this fall and space is limited to 6 participants. Sanju Pal was a high-performing management consultant when she was told she had a cyst on her ovary the size of a Coke can. But sitting in her gynecologist's office, facing urgent surgery, all she could think about was her job. That moment was the beginning of a seven year struggle through endometriosis, dismissal by her employer, and two employment tribunals - that ended in a landmark ruling establishing that endometriosis can be considered a disability under the Equality Act 2010 in the UK. Sanju Pal talks to Golda about the overlooked aspects of her health story, how her relationship with her body has evolved, and what she’s learned from years of self-advocacy. Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, or PMDD is an overlooked and under-researched condition - a severe form of PMS. Shalene Gupta is the author of ‘The Cycle: Confronting the Pain of Periods and PMDD’, a raw account of her experience with this condition. Shalene talks about the havoc it created in her life and her relationships, and the difficult path to finding effective treatment. She also traces PMDD’s controversial route to formal recognition by the medical establishment. A version of this episode first ran in April 2025. Jasna Hodžić is a writer, researcher - and avid rock climber, and she's built a life around the sport she loves. When she was in her mid-twenties, her gynecologist ran a hormone panel and sent her for a bone density scan, and what came back was the last thing she expected. Jasna had the bone density of someone decades older. She was, as she puts it, 'crumbling from within' - and she had no idea. The condition is called Female Athlete Triad, now also known as RED-S: Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport. Jasna tells Golda her story, and what she wants other female athletes to know. We also hear from listener Catherine Uptmor, a former gymnast, who requested this topic, and who has a story of her own. Nancy King Reame, Professor Emerita at Columbia University's School of Nursing, has spent decades researching tampon safety. She was on the FDA task force that investigated the link between tampons and toxic shock syndrome in the early eighties - a deadly outbreak that killed dozens of women and affected hundreds more. Her research led to the absorbency scale printed on every box of tampons sold. Nancy King Reame says even today, we still don't fully know what goes into a tampon. Nancy Reame is the Mary Dickey Lindsay Professor of Health Promotion, Risk Reduction (Emerita), at the Columbia University School of Nursing. This episode covers: -The history of toxic shock syndrome and its link to tampon absorbency in the 1980s -How tampons are still tested using a synthetic vagina and blue-dyed salt water — not menstrual fluid -Why we don't know the specifics of what goes into a tampon For a further deep dive into this episode, subscribe to our newsletter: https://overlookedpodcast.kit.com/f8ebd706ad What to listen to next: another episode on women’s health history - the story of the Dalkon Shield IUD: https://overlooked.simplecast.com/episodes/the-dark-history-of-the-dalkon-shield-iud-with-chikako-takeshita This episode is sponsored by Raesyn Footwear. Cesarean births are one of the most common operations in the world, and yet, we know surprisingly little about the impact and legacy of this surgery in our bodies. Host Golda Arthur had two emergency cesarean births, and 20 years later, she's still making sense of their legacy. In this episode, she sits down with Rachel Somerstein, author of Invisible Labor: The Untold Story of the Cesarean Section , and Helena Grant, president of New York Midwives , to talk about why cesarean births are overlooked. They discuss: - The origin of this surgery, which in the United States was first practiced on enslaved women. - Why the rate of c-sections is so high in the US. - Why recovery takes far longer than anyone tells you. - What to know if you’re pregnant, or trying to have a baby, and want to know more about cesarean births. But sitting in an uncomfortable chair with an IV in her arm, she realized something. This episode steps back in time, to the origins of the fight for birth control. It wasn't led by one woman - it was shaped by a fierce rivalry between two: Margaret Sanger, who founded Planned Parenthood, and an overlooked figure from history, Mary Ware Dennett, who was the first person to ever take reproductive rights to Washington. Their different visions for birth control - and their bitter personal conflict - created the movement we know today. Author Stephanie Gorton reveals how this hidden history still matters, 100 years later.
