What if you could train your body and nervous system to be more resilient? In this episode, I speak with my trusty podcast producer, Tony, all about building resilience. I discuss how resilience and threat are deeply intertwined, why traditional conditioning approaches can sometimes backfire, and how a holistic approach allows us to take someone from feeling pain to moving well and building strength, endurance, and tolerance. I also talk about the anatomy of the thalamus and its role in passing or inhibiting threat signals to the brain, history findings that could indicate issues with the thalamus, and why the thalamus may be a key factor in understanding and overcoming chronic pain. I also share strategies to improve resilience through threat reduction, targeted exposure, and thalamic conditioning. This episode touches on topics such as the threat bucket, threat inoculation , the thalamus, chronic pain, air hunger, ice baths, saunas, strength training, training specificity, plasticity, interoception, the frontal cortex, joint mobility, bone rhythms, obstacle courses, and more. What should you actually do once you've found a professional in applied neurology? In this episode, I speak with my trusty podcast producer, Tony, all about what you can do as a client to take control of your own health and performance. I discuss common mistakes and misconceptions, what to share about your health and fitness history, why your mindset matters, the importance of doing your homework, how to find a good practitioner, the invisible effects of metabolic health, how much education you really need, and more. I share stories of an athlete that couldn't fix his tight hamstring, a first session where a 45 minute history-taking led to a 5 minute breakthrough, and of how my own experience with mold toxicity has informed how I think about being in the client's shoes. In this episode, I speak with my trusty podcast producer, Tony, all about the spine and how spinal mobility relates to pain, movement, and neural processing. I go over common history findings and assessments that indicate issues with the spine. I also go over findings that look like they indicate the spine, but may actually be visceral referred pain from internal organs or processing issues in higher order systems. I address common misconceptions and poor practices regarding spinal health and the importance of addressing root causes. Finally, I give the listeners ideas and resources on how to improve spinal mobility for a better neural network, less pain, and better movement. This episode covers topics such as deep tendon reflexes, gait analysis, sensory testing, bilateral muscle weakness, gut health, breathing, the parietal lobe, posture, neck injuries, nerve glides, vestibular drills, steel clubs, and more. What if strength training isn't improving your posture? In this episode, I speak with my trusty podcast producer, Tony, all about the neurology of posture. I discuss why posture is so commonly misunderstood, why higher order systems cannot be ignored with regard to posture, and how to assess postural problems from an applied neurology perspective. I talk about the importance of vision, balance, and movement in defining posture, as well as address structural issues from birth or lifestyle, and in doing so I make the case that posture and higher order neurological systems are inherently connected. With that knowledge, I then provide a framework for analyzing posture from a more holistic vantage point. From gait assessments to vision drills and even understanding why a hearing deficit may be causing bad posture, this episode is everything you need to know and probably aren't hearing about with regard to posture. What if aquatic training could turbo-charge your recovery? In this episode, I speak with my trusty podcast producer, Tony, all about aquatic training and how I would often use it to aid in recovery, reduce inflammation and improve many facets of movement like strength, coordination, mobility, endurance, and more. I discuss how aquatic training and the Burdenko Method were a formative part of my movement education and outline what makes aquatic training unique from a movement perspective. I also breakdown aquatic training methods from an applied neurology perspective, and discuss how it can improve range of motion and create a more supportive environment for movement after injury, but also how it can adversely affect the vestibular system and create issues in certain situations. I talk about how I would use aquatic training for athletes, as well as some of the programming ideas in the Burdanko method that set it apart. Aquatic training is not your grandmother's water aerobics, and even though I have moved away from it for practical reasons, I encourage everyone to experiment with this modality to this day. What if you could use a single framework to diagnose your pain and mobility issues? In this episode, I speak with my trusty podcast producer, Tony, about the 8 Levels of Applied Neurology, and how any issue we are trying to solve can be viewed through this framework to better understand, diagnose, and target it at the neurological level. I outline the 8 Levels from the outside-in, following the neuro-anatomy of the body from the receptor level at the skin all the way up the spine and into the brain, and in doing so, show how you can systematically evaluate pain, movement, or mobility issues from a local level on up to higher order systems in the brain. I also use a specific example of a pain and mobility issue and run it through the 8 Levels so you can see exactly how it can be applied and why so many of these issues are complex and touch many different systems in the body. The 8 Levels is a powerful model that integrates all of the topics, tools, and approaches discussed thus far on the podcast into a single framework, and is required listening for the aspiring or practicing movement coach or professional. Does the word "neurology" make you think of scientists in white lab coats? In this episode, I bring it back to basics with my trusty podcast producer, Tony, and talk about what applied neurology really is. I define applied neurology as I use it in my practice and what sets it apart from other more clinical neuroscience-based disciplines like functional neurology. I also talk about the growing "nervous system regulation" space and what many are getting right and wrong about applied neurology as the concepts start to become more popular. I talk about some of the core foundations and models underpinning applied neurology such as the input/output loop, the threat bucket, the assessment process, the importance of neuroanatomy, the time-scale of the nervous system, and more. This is a review of fundamental concepts but also a great discussion around how I think about applied neurology and how it fits into the wider conversation around health, fitness, pain, and mobility. Do you have clients who never seem to warm up despite your best efforts? In this episode, I speak with my trusty podcast producer, Tony, about the autonomic system and how it relates to pain and mobility. I talk about the involuntary nature of the autonomic system, the relationship between voluntary and involuntary function, how the body will anticipate physical activity, the neuro-anatomy of autonomic function, pain and threat, gait, breathing, blood-pressure, bone-conduction headphones, warm-ups, and more. I also talk about how to determine if someone is having issues with their autonomic system, what tools you can use when making assessments, and different stimuli that can be used to improve autonomic function.
