My Dad's Car : Nostalgic cars of our childhood

Published by Andy Gregory and Jon Recknell

  • Kids & family
  • Leisure
  • Automotive

Join Andy and Jon, two friends who have discussions with invited guests about their personal relationships with automotive nostalgia and family history. Each episode kicks off with us asking our guest “what’s your earliest car memory?” From there it’s a journey back through time towards the modern day, but generally focusing on vehicles we remember from childhood. We ask about siblings, neighbours, music, smells, smoking, breakdowns, selling, buying, accidents and more. Despite the podcast title, we don’t discriminate against cars belonging to other people, such as Mum’s, Gran’s, Uncle’s, Aunts, friends, or even a neighbours. If those cars made an impression, we want to talk about them. Sep 8, 20267 min

Send us Fan Mail Just a quick audio note to say "We're still alive" and we haven't forgotten you. In fact, we recorded this whilst we were recording another guest for Season 9. We've recorded 4 so far of Season 9, with more guests pencilled in for this September. In this bonus episode, Jon and Andy have a quick chat about summer holidays, Jon's work with grass cutting and furniture sales, Andy's rusty 944 and modern classics going up in value, and of course the fact we've had a little break for 'life'. We hope you're all keeping well, and normal service will resume (hopefully) late September / Early October. 2. Tom Gray - That Guy Gray: Sunbeam Alpine, My Dad's Company BMWs got replaced by Ford Mondeos. E39 5-Series, Peugeot 406, BMW Z3, BMW Z4. S8E10

    Jul 28, 202636 min

Send us Fan Mail We're joined by Tom Gray, who may be better known to you as 'That Guy Gray' an automotive content creator. He's sat in his Range Rover L322 for this interview. Tom's earliest car memory starts off with him around age 12, and a Sunbeam Alpine that he would steer from the lap of a family friend. Other motoring memories include staying up 'late' to watch Top Gear with hid Dad. His Dad was and still is, a bit of a petrol head. Prior to children he'd had a Ford Escort XR3, Tom recalls the first car he travelled in was a red Peugeot 406, followed by a blue 406. His Dad would have BMW company cars, and these peaked with the E39 generation 5 series, a model both Tom and Jon hold a candle for. When his Dad's work dropped BMW from the company car scheme these were replaced by Ford Mondeos. When Tom was 13 his Dad bought a Fire Engine red BMW Z3, which they would take on road trips, and even did some track days in. This later inspired Tom to buy his own BMW Z4 Coupe. Tom's Mum has had Fiesta's, a Ford Focus and these days drives a JCW Mini Cooper, which she is keen to modify - Tom less so! We hope you enjoy this chat, and please do go and give Toms channel a follow. 3. Emily Wilson: Making content with my 81 year old Dad, his vintage car collection, P100, Dodge Ram, and Mum’s brand new BMW 7 series S8E9.

    Jul 14, 20261 hr 0 min

Send us Fan Mail Paul Harding steps into the co-host chair once more for this great episode with Emily Wilson. We found Emily on Instagram Emily Wilson’s Cars (@emwilsons_cars) • Instagram photos and videos where her channel has rocketed to now over 40k followers in only a matter of months, largely based on her 81 year old Dad's antics, knowledge and huge likeability, and her own skill of extracting soundbites and pearls of wisdom and turning them into social media content for others to enjoy. Emily's story starts very simply, living above an antiques shop, her Dad would drive a Ford P100 pickup and between him and his wife (Emily's Mum) they would source, sell and deliver architectural antiques, with previous customers including Ringo Starr and the now King of England, Charles III. As business grew, so the cars came along - her Mum choosing to buy a brand new BMW 7 series, and her Dad favouring Dodge Ram pick up trucks! Alongside the truck, her Dad would also buy and restore classic cars which now form a 15 strong collection including Bentleys and Rolls Royces from the 20s and 30s, through to Jaguar E Type, Austin Healey and even a Ford Escort! We really hope you enjoy this chat and reflection on both car nostalgia, but also on what it takes to create content in 2026. 4. Paul Lucas - Kit Cars With Paul: My Dad's MGB V8, Triumph Stag, Mk2 Jag, E-Type, V12 XJS, XJ6 and watching the MPGs S8E8

    Jun 30, 202636 min

Send us Fan Mail We're joined by Paul Lucas, a serial kit car builder and man behind the YouTube channel Kit Cars With Paul 79. Kit Cars with Paul79 - YouTube Our conversation starts with us diving into the channel, what made him start doing kit cars, and whether its a day job. From there we're back on track with Paul's earliest car memory - an MGB GT with a V8, possibly a factory built car, maybe a diy upgrade. Later this car would be replaced with Triumph Stags, which would facilitate a whole social circle and camping trips to the continent. Paul's Dad loved a Jaguar too, and often would have a pair at anyone time. Although despite liking a big engine such as the V12 XJS he would insist on driving slowly to keep the MPG as high as possible!! Sadly Paul's father is no longer about, but we do chat about him building the Ferrari kit car at his Dad's house, how he would help him with jobs (although not to his high standards) and how he did get to see the first Porsche builds before he 'popped off'. To find out more about these cars check out Paul's website. Kit Cars with Paul79 We're pleased to say the guys from Viking Covers are staying on as Sponsor for My Dad's Car. 5. Ben Marshall - Dad Cars: A Mitsubishi Space Wagon, a Fiat Punto, Jag XJ6, Lotus Elise and my older brother's Gran Turismo car! S8E7

    Jun 16, 202643 min

Send us Fan Mail We're joined by Ben Marshall from the YouTube channel Dad Cars to discuss why and how he got involved in the automotive world. It all starts with a Mitsubishi Space Wagon, a rare car, with 7 seats, back in the day but a car Ben would love to get his hands on, although they have all seemingly vanished from the planet! Following his parents split, his Dad got a sliver Mk1 Fiat Punto as a runaround, his Mum never passed her test, despite several attempts. Music wise, Bens Dad would listen to Fleetwood Mac and Queen. A pivotal car in his childhood was an S1 Lotus Elise which belonged to a neighbour, Ben would later re-live that ownership fantasy himself as an adult. At school Ben had a pal with a burgundy Jaguar XJ, it didn't have any seatbelts in the back, and his Mum let them run around with their t-shirts off in the summer, let alone climb up the scaffolding at his house. Please check out Ben's Dad Cars channel on YouTube here: I MADE A MASERATI MPV FAMILY CAR WITH 6 SEATS! and on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/dadcars88 We're pleased to say the guys from Viking Covers are staying on as Sponsor for My Dad's Car. 6. Mike Fernie - The Engine Guy: My Dad's MG C, Lanchester LD14, Rover 600, Mondeo and Aston Martins at the school gates. S8E6

    Jun 2, 202641 min

Send us Fan Mail We're joined by You Tuber Mike Fernie, previously a presenter for DriveTribe, he's now out on his own and doing fantastically. Andy met Mike at the NEC Classic Car Show last year, and Mike was kind enough to say he'd join us for a chat. We kick things off with Mike's earliest car memory, and it's his fathers MGC behind the garage doors which sticks prominently in his mind, from when he was 2 or 3 years old. Behind the MG, is parked a 1930s Lanchester LD14, a car that we think either belonged to his Grandfather or Uncle, or is the same model that they used to drive. The MGC is due to be back on the road again in 2026, the Lanchester sadly, with its 8hp engine, is still sat in the corner, awaiting some love. When it comes to cars in regular use, his Father's Rover 600 is the core car memory, along with his Grandfather's Mk2 Ford Mondeo. Just like many of our other guests, Mike has dipped his toe in reliving those ownership experiences himself, however, he's 'one-upped' his elders and bought the range topping sportier versions, the ST200 and the 600 Ti with the Tomcat turbocharged engine. We touch a little on Mike's time on DriveTribe, and see if we can get any inside 'dad's car' scoops on his previous ex-Top Gear colleagues. Jeremy's Dad had a Cortina 1600E, and Richard now owns the Morgan he'd previously gifted to his late father, and apparently has plans to modify it in the future. A big thanks to Mike for joining us - please go and check out his channel here. 7. Josh Davies: My Dad worked with Andy, we moved to the USA because of VWs. Herbie, Vanagon Syncro S8E5

    May 19, 202638 min

Send us Fan Mail Josh Davies joins us from the USA to talk about his Dad, Richard Davies, who Andy worked with for over ten years at Heritage Parts Centre. Richard was a brilliant guy, hugely knowledgeable, and stoically lived with Cancer for 20 years before it finally caught up with him. Josh recalls his Dad having a Herbie VW Beetle when he was young and growing up in Wales. They moved to USA for Josh's Dads work, In Colorado, Josh and his Dad would go for a drive, with classical music playing loud, in an attempt to scare the Buffalo! 8. Grant Williams: Racing Jaguars is what my family does. Mk1 Jaguar Racecar BUY 1, Goodwood Revival S8E4

    May 5, 202642 min

Send us Fan Mail We're joined by Grant Williams this week, a third generation classic Jaguar racer who is a crowd favourite out on track. Starting from pole position in his first race, to winning the championship in the first year, to wowing the fans at Goodwood events going sideways at every opportunity. It’s fair to say racing is in his blood. It started with his Grandfather, who with a few friends used to all race on the same license, keeping a bucket of water on the paddock to cool the drum brakes between races! He regularly races BUY 1 which was first bought by his Grandfather from the factory team as it had disc brakes and kept beating him! Grant has also recently bought back his father's Mk2 Jaguar wide body 'lightweight' project which will be powered by 700hp V12 race engine, and features 19” wide rear wheels from an F1 car! Other cars of note include a 3 door Range Rover tow car, and a Mk3 Ford Escort Van that used to tow the Jag behind it. Grant would travel in the car, and his Dad would drive the van - when they got to a hill, Grant fired up the race car and pushed the van along, helping it get to the top!! You can follow the whole project on YouTube. 9. James Blaze: My Dad had 2CVs, Skodas and then collected Porsches. 924, 968, Carrera GT. S8E3

    Apr 21, 202649 min

Send us Fan Mail We’re joined by James Blaze this week who has found himself the custodian of his late father’s car collection. The story starts with Citroen 2CVs and moves through a Peugeot 505 estate that he welded seat belt brackets into and toured around Europe. His father became interested in motor trials and picked Skodas as his weapon of choice, before getting introduced to Porsches, firstly with a 924, then a Turbo before a run of 968s, including several Clubsport models. We first saw James on Jonny Smiths Late Brake Show - watch the video here. https://youtu.be/w_Y1i1qWo1M?si=A-8aGQzSl7g0La3_ We're pleased to say the guys from Viking Covers are staying on as Sponsor for My Dad's Car. 10. Charlotte Vowden: My Grandad's Ford Escort saved me from school bullies, and inheriting my Grandfather's MGA roadster. S8E2

    Apr 7, 20261 hr 11 min

Send us Fan Mail We're joined by Charlotte Vowden, Motoring journalist, automotive adventurer and presenter. Her story with cars hasn't always been a passion. It starts with her Grandads Mk3 Escort, and how he would pick her up from school and 'save her' from the bullies who would throw footballs at her head as she made her way to the gate. The car was nothing special, except it really was special. Her Dad was a mobile mechanic, so was busy working a lot of the time, but his skills have really come into their own in more recent years as Charlotte inherited an MGA roadster from her other Grandfather, and she's been on a number of life affirming roadtrips since taking over the ownership. From driving the length of the UK on sustainable fuel, to mimic the 1000 mile test from days gone by, to driving to Nordcapp, the furthest accessible point north, in Norway. Please do follow what Charlotte gets up to on Instagram, where you'll also find photos from her car based adventures. 11. Steve Clyde - Gyeon UK: My Dad could pedal. Peugeot 504, Vauxhall Carlton, Chevette Estate, my Brother’s Capri S8E1

    Mar 24, 202639 min

Send us Fan Mail We're joined by Steve Clyde from Gyeon UK this week. His earliest car memory is a gold Peugeot 504 Estate, and taking 8 or 9 family members down to Cornwall for holidays. After Vauxhall Chevette followed, which was his first experience of his Dad in a rear wheel drive car. He’d previously owned a Mk2 and Mk10 Jaguar before kids came along. His brother is older than him, and he recalls him taking him to a family photography session is his Capri, a drifting around a corner only to be spotted by his parents waiting outside the studio. His Mum was shocked, his Dad secretly proud! We're pleased to say the guys from Viking Covers are staying on as Sponsor for My Dad's Car. 12. Greg and Adam from Viking Covers: Beige Mk2 Escorts, Peugeot 205, Audi RS4, Jag E-Type, we chat to our sponsors about their earliest car memories. S7E10

    Mar 10, 202642 min

Send us Fan Mail We are joined by Greg and Adam, owners of Viking Covers, our proud sponsor for Season 7 of the Podcast. We've never recorded as a 4 before, but we think it came out pretty well - although it does make the editing a bit harder!! Adam recalls his parent's hearing aid beige Mk2 Escort - and strangely enough, he owns one very similar now, except his has a Cosworth lump and over 400bhp!! Sadly his Mums Escort was stolen while he was at a kids party, and never recovered. It was replaced by a Peugeot 205. He did have a mate who's Dad had a 3 door Cosworth - so he and his friends used to go to classic Ford events. Greg tells us his Dad used to have Audi RS6s, which prompted him to buy one for himself a few years back - however, reliability wasn't its strong point, and he's chopped it in for a ex-British Gas Caddy van and an EV! His Uncle had a blue Jaguar E-Type, which they used to take to classic car shows. We hope you enjoy this episode, and thanks again to Greg and Adam for supporting what we do. 14. Gracie Haddon - StarterMotor Charity: My Dad took us around Europe to meet car owners for a book he was writing. Triumph Herald, Austin Healey Sprite, Porsche 912 S7 E8

    Feb 10, 202634 min

Send us Fan Mail We're joined by Gracie Haddon, from the StarterMotor Charity, an organization that helps young people to create careers in the classic automotive 'ecosystem'. We chat about Gracie's upbringing - her Dad's work as a writer of Classic Vehicle books, and how they would travel around Europe, with a photographer, to meet and document owners of rare and cherished vehicles. Family holidays were taken in a Jeep Cherokee, and spent in an Airstream Caravan kept just outside of Horsham. She was meant to visit JayKay from Jamiroquai's house for the book, but sadly he had to cancel. She has since met him though. We speak about her shared Austin Healey Sprite that she owns with her Dad, but she really wants a Triumph Herald, because of a lady they met on their travels who owned one. Gracie encourages us to visit both Bicester Motion, and the coveted Hagerty Festival of the Unexceptional, which we have only heard great things about. We really hope you enjoy this one, and please look up StarterMotor both to support their vision, but also as an information source for the young people in your life. 15. Nick Whale - Iconic Auctioneers: Dad's Camaro, Brand New Rolls Royces, Aston Martin V8, Gerry Marshall and Vauxhall Firenza. S7E7 Recorded at NEC Classic Car Show

    Jan 27, 202634 min

Send us Fan Mail We recorded this live at the NEC Classic Motor Show, in the back of a Land Rover Campervan! Our guest is the founder and CEO of Iconic Auctioneers - the massive auction at the show, Nick Whale. Nick's Dad was a Car Dealer, so its safe to say cars are in his blood. His Dad imported a Camaro when he was young, and then as a the CEO of a successful chain of car dealerships, would buy a brand new Rolls Royce each year, and did this for many years on the bounce. Sadly, his fellow classmates at boarding school took his Dad's flash car as a reason to pick on him. Nick recalls being a VIP guest at the Vauxhall Firenza launch - he got to meet Gerry Marshall, and later became good friends with him and now owns an ex-Gerry Marshall Firenza road car. We chat about auctions of course, motorsport and Nick's love of racing, and also the enthusiasm some of his kids are showing for cars too. 18. Barney Dines - Heritage Parts Centre: Live at the NEC Classic Car Show. Mk1 Escort Mexico to France, Nan in Sportscars, Teacher in a Cossie! S7E5

    Dec 30, 202530 min

Send us Fan Mail Barney was the first of our live interviews at the 2025 Classic Car Show at the NEC. As Andy's boss, he's known Barney for 18 years, but this is the first time he had interviewed him. We start things off with a bucket and a gritty sponge, with him helping to clean his Dad's yellow Mk1 Escort Mexico. We stay in that car for drives to the South of France, including knocking the exhaust off on the ferry with some frequency. There was a teacher at Barney's school with an RS500 Cosworth, and a sixth former with a Beetle. Naturally, as the CEO of Heritage Parts Centre, we spoke about how Barney got into VWs - it was the Bug Jam coverage on TV, which he saw at school that set the spark inside him. Elsewhere, there's mention of his Nans interest in British sportscars, and how she almost got a Morgan, but by the time her name came up on the waiting list, she was too old to get in and out of it! 19. Jez Hayter - Mythron Cars: Grandfather’s Wolsley, Norway in a Renault 18, 3 door Range Rover and building Austin Healey Sebring Sprites for the modern day. S7 E4

    Dec 16, 202537 min

Send us Fan Mail We’re joined by Jez Hayter the founder of Mythron Cars who produce a bespoke, reinvented modified Austin Healey Sebring Sprite for the modern day. Discussion starts with the charm of playing Action Men and moves into a 50’s Wolsley which belonged to his Grandfather - complete with fold out rear picnic tables. Later we speak about their family Renault 18 estate, which took the family to Norway for two years, Jez would sit in the middle, something he was particularly proud of. In Norway they had a neighbour with a classic 3 door Range Rover in powder blue, with a tan interior, with no seat belts to restrict them, they could fit 6 kids in the back! We wrap things up with some talk about technology and safety improvements. We hope you enjoy this episode.
