Texas GOP candidate Bo French ignited a furious debate on the nature of American identity after posting a photo of a University of Texas game that showed one section of the stands dominated by foreigners. The mass migration of Indians into Texas has created a cultural shift that many residents find unsettling. Democrats rushed to accuse the candidate of racism, and they were joined by many Texas Republicans, but French stood firm. As Republicans head toward what looks like a perilous midterm election, affordability is on everyone’s lips. The Biden administration never convinced voters that it had brought food and housing costs under control. Some Republicans have tried to pretend the problem does not exist; others have acknowledged it without making meaningful progress. Both Joe Biden and Donald Trump made choices that worsened the pressure, from expanding federal spending to deepening costly foreign commitments. Neither party has a durable solution. The Congressional Budget Office projects a $1.9 trillion deficit for fiscal year 2026, and debt held by the public now tops 101% of GDP. Spending and inflation are not accidents at the edge of mass democracy. Many Americans have heard the "melting pot" analogy used to explain the nature of our country's identity, but they don't know that term is relatively new. For most of the nation's history, the "Anglo-assimilation model" was considered the standard. Immigrants could come from all over Europe, but they were expected to conform to a predominantly British culture. The latest jobs report showed that 98% of new jobs in the month of August went to women, along with most of the raises and promotions. President Trump and other GOP politicians praised the news as a victory for women, but the implications for marriage in the U.S. are staggering. Women do not marry unemployed men, and they do not marry men who make less than they do. The Trump administration recently revealed it is drafting a proposal, championed by Vice President JD Vance, to change how the government distributes money already earmarked for child care. The plan would tap the roughly $12 billion Child Care and Development Fund and make some of that money available to married couples with a stay-at-home parent. No new appropriation is involved. After months of conservative outrage over fraud and abuse in child care programs, you might expect the Right to welcome a proposal that gives families another option. For decades, American hiring and admissions have been distorted by a legal and bureaucratic regime that promised equal treatment while repeatedly rewarding institutions for sorting people by race and sex. The Civil Rights Act itself does not exclude white men; Title VII protects employees from discrimination because of race and sex regardless of which race or sex they are. But affirmative action rules, consent decrees, diversity mandates, contracting preferences, and institutional risk management created powerful incentives to treat demographic categories differently. Incentives shape behavior. Universities, Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, and nonprofits learned to fear discrimination claims, bad publicity, activist campaigns, and regulatory scrutiny. Long before “wokeness” became a corporate religion, lawyers and compliance departments were already teaching institutions to think in terms of protected groups, disparate impact, representation targets, and litigation exposure. Everyone is talking about how the implementation of artificial intelligence will revolutionize employment or education, but very few are talking about how it will change politics. The managerial revolution changed how societies were organized, placing large amounts of power into mass bureaucracies and mass media. The assassination of Charlie Kirk was a devastating blow to conservatives, but almost as shocking was the response from parts of the left. Major figures issued the expected denunciations, yet plenty of ordinary progressives celebrated the violent death of a father and husband or mocked his memory online. Conservatives learned that some of their neighbors were perfectly willing to cheer the murder of a political opponent. Since then, trade wars, foreign wars, and the usual daily controversies have offered convenient distractions from a much darker realization: Something about American politics has changed. The old assumption that nearly everyone still accepts the same basic rules can no longer be taken for granted. The Trump administration secured a flurry of big wins recently across several different categories. On immigration we have seen the deportation of Hattians who lost their Temporary Protected Status, a $100,000 fee for H-1Bs, and a pause on immigrant visas. The administration also secured big victories in the courts that will allow ICE to continue deportations and will also allow restrictions on mail-in balloting. British political commentator Melanie Phillips recently made a social media post claiming that the British are not allowed to have a national identity but Israelis are required to have one. The arguments stemmed from her belief that the British were not a real ethnic group with a right to a collective self-determination, while the Israelis do share a real ethnic bond, so their claims are valid. Unfortunately,  Phillips is far from alone in this belief, which has created a real barrier to robust nationalism. When I first entered the public arena, the focus of my work was almost entirely on why the Right needed to take power seriously. Conservatives had suffered a devastating string of political and cultural losses because they focused on argument and ideology while paying little attention to the way power actually worked. That criticism drew plenty of hostility from defenders of the status quo who did not appreciate some rookie pointing out why decades of conservative leadership had produced so little. It turns out I was not alone. Popular voices, including Matt Walsh and John Doyle, now openly support conservatives taking and wielding power effectively. That disagreement has launched another round of public debate over the pursuit of power, but the argument is only a proxy for a larger battle over JD Vance, foreign policy, and the future of MAGA. Lindsay Clancy is on trial for the horrific crime of allegedly murdering her three children after sending her husband out to do errands. Even the defense in the case is not bothering to argue that Clancy is innocent, only that she may have been temporarily insane due to postpartum depression. Despite this admission, women online have raised a massive amount of money while creating a conspiracy theory that blames Clancy's husband.
