After joining the Kansas City Fire Department in 2012, Ralph entered a world built around discipline, sacrifice, brotherhood and service. He began his career earning approximately $13 an hour while responding to fires, shootings, overdoses, fatal crashes and other emergencies across Kansas City. In this deeply personal conversation, Ralph describes discovering a body inside a burning home after believing the building had already been searched. He also recalls helping rescue a young boy from an apartment fire moments before the building began collapsing. Although the crew got the child outside, he later died from smoke inhalation. His mother taught him how to survive the streets, while his father introduced him to church, discipline, hard work and life outside the neighborhood.
