Is this actually a safe space? In this episode: The never-ending reality of coming out The mental load of constantly deciding whether to come out The everyday assumptions about being straight and cisgender Protecting your energy vs making something a teaching moment The pressure to explain your relationship and identity Why using the word "partner" can be more inclusive Coming out is a choice, not an obligation= Join us as we talk about the never-ending process of coming out, queer identity, LGBTQIA+ safety and the mental exhaustion that can come with constantly explaining who you are . 2. Is Queer Visibility Going Backwards? The Census, & Queer Disney Songs

    Sep 3, 202630 min

Send us a message Welcome back to Let's Be Perfectly Queer Podcast , your go to LGBT Australian podcast for all things queer . Small talk is BACK!.. Kind of.. we chatted more than I thought! In this episode of Let’s Be Perfectly Queer, we dive into some of the LGBTQIA+ topics, conversations and headlines that have caught our attention recently. First up: the Australian Census. Are the new LGBTQ+ questions enough to give us an accurate picture of Australia's queer community? And what happens when people are still living at home or aren't in a position where it feels safe to be openly LGBTQIA+? Then, we're talking about that phrase we're all sick of hearing: "Stop shoving your sexuality down our throats." Is queer representation really being forced on people or are people simply uncomfortable seeing LGBTQIA+ lives represented in the same way heterosexual relationships always have been? We also discuss rainbow capitalism and why some major brands appear to be scaling back their Pride support. Were they ever genuine allies, or was supporting the LGBTQIA+ community only worthwhile when there was money to be made? Plus, Japan is introducing a nationwide LGBTQ+ education program but can education alone create genuine inclusion when same-sex marriage still isn't legally recognised? And finally, we talk about the songs that hit a little differently when you're queer. Is Part of Your World secretly a queer anthem? Why does Reflection resonate so strongly with so many trans and queer people? And what Disney song meant something completely different to you when you were growing up? In this episode: LGBTQIA+ questions in the Australian Census Being queer while living at home and staying in the closet Is LGBTQ+ representation really being "shoved down our throats"? Pride, backlash and rainbow capitalism Brands scaling back their LGBTQIA+ support LGBTQ+ education in Japan Can education change attitudes without equal legal rights? Is Part of Your World a queer anthem? The queer meanings we find in Disney songs Reflection , Go the Distance and the songs that helped shape us Join us as we chat about a range of queer topics.. and until next time... stay perfectly queer! 3. Were Bert and Ernie Queer? Queer Coding in Our Childhood Shows and Cartoons

    Aug 20, 202643 min

Send us a message Welcome back to Let's Be Perfectly Queer Podcast , your go to LGBT Australian podcast for all things queer . If you ever watched a childhood cartoon and thought “Hang on… were they queer?” , this episode is for you. This week on Let’s Be Perfectly Queer Podcast , Archie and Katie dive into one of the most fascinating and complicated parts of LGBTQIA+ representation in media: queer coding . From the age-old debate over Bert and Ernie to Tinky Winky and Ursula , we explore the childhood characters that generations of queer people have seen themselves in, even when those characters were never officially LGBTQIA+. But why did queer coding happen in the first place? We go back to the Hays Code and a time when openly queer characters were rarely allowed on screen, forcing writers and filmmakers to communicate queerness through mannerisms, relationships, fashion, personality and subtext. We also unpack the darker side of queer coding, particularly the long history of queer-coded villains and what happens when the only characters who seem to reflect you are the bad guys. And then there's the big question: does it matter what the creators intended if queer audiences found genuine representation in those characters? In this episode we discuss: Whether Bert and Ernie were actually queer What queer coding really means The history of the Hays Code and LGBTQIA+ censorship The childhood characters we may have completely missed were queer coded Why so many Disney villains have queer-coded traits Ursula, Scar, Jafar, Captain Hook and the history of the queer-coded villain Tinky Winky, SpongeBob, Velma, Shego, Elsa and more What happens when queer representation is associated with villains, outsiders and "the other" Why positive LGBTQIA+ representation in children's media matters Whether you're LGBTQIA+, an ally, a cartoon lover, or someone who has ever looked back at a childhood character and thought “OH… I get it now” , this episode will have you questioning everything you watched growing up. So… who was your queer-coded childhood character? 👀 🎧 Listen now, and let us know who you saw yourself in growing up... 4. Is Being LGBTQIA+ "Natural"? What Queer Ecology Can Teach Us About Ourselves

    Jul 30, 202635 min

Send us a message Welcome back to Let's Be Perfectly Queer Podcast , your go to LGBT Australian podcast for all things queer . If you've ever heard someone say being LGBTQIA+ is "unnatural," this episode is for you. This week on Let's Be Perfectly Queer Podcast , Archie sits down with Lee Pivnick and Nicolas Baird , co-founders of the Institute of Queer Ecology , to unpack one of the most fascinating intersections of science, nature and queerness. From gay swans and bonobos to trans clownfish (yes, Finding Nemo got it wrong), we explore the incredible diversity of sexuality, gender and relationships found throughout the natural world. But this conversation goes far beyond animal facts. We dive into what queer ecology actually is, how science has historically overlooked queer perspectives, why biodiversity matters, and how viewing nature through a queer lens can change the way we think about ourselves, our communities and the planet. In this episode we discuss: What queer ecology actually means Same-sex relationships throughout the animal kingdom Gender-changing fish and the real story behind Finding Nemo Bonobos, gay swans and surprising animal behaviour Climate change, biodiversity and conservation Why "it's not natural" is one of the weakest arguments against LGBTQ+ people Whether you're LGBTQIA+, an ally, a science nerd or simply curious, this conversation will completely change how you think about nature 🎧 Listen now to learn about more than just gay swans... In this episode of Let’s Be Perfectly Queer , we sit down with Heather Hester author, speaker, and host of More Human, More Kind, to talk about something a lot of parents and allies struggle with… fear. Apr 9, 202626 min

Send us a message Welcome back to Let's Be Perfectly Queer Podcast , your go to LGBT Australian podcast for all things queer . In this episode Archie sits down with wellness coach and licensed social worker Devin Scott to unpack something so many LGBTQ+ people experience, but rarely talk about: the exhaustion of masking, code switching, and trying to “belong.” With Devin we unpack what it really means to play the “game of belonging”… and why even when you “win,” it can still feel like something’s missing. We explore: Why masking and code switching are survival tools for LGBTQ+ people The mental health impact of long-term masking (burnout 👀) Queer perfectionism and the pressure to “fit” everywhere How shame shows up and why it’s not always the enemy The difference between being accepted and actually being seen Where to start if you’re realising you’ve been “playing the game” Because the truth is a lot of us were never taught how to exist as ourselves safely. 13. Did Shakespeare Have a Secret Gay Lover? Queer Clues & The Fair Youth

    Mar 26, 202629 min

Send us a message Welcome back to Let's Be Perfectly Queer Podcast , your go to LGBT Australian podcast for all things queer . This week, we’re diving into one of the biggest literary debates of all time: was William Shakespeare gay… or at least queer? From secret lovers to “queer-coded” sonnets, we unpack the theory that Shakespeare may have had romantic or sexual relationships with men, particularly the mysterious “Fair Youth” featured in 126 of his sonnets. We explore: The Fair Youth and who he might have been Shakespeare’s sonnets and their surprisingly queer themes The dramatic portrait theory (involving vandalism and possible heartbreak) Queer themes in plays like Twelfth Night and The Merchant of Venice Why we can’t label historical figures the way we do today We also touch on: Are we uncovering hidden queer history or projecting modern identities onto the past? Because while we may never know Shakespeare’s sexuality for sure, one thing is clear: his work is filled with passion, desire, gender fluidity, and relationships that don’t fit neatly into boxes. Whether you’re a Shakespeare fan, a queer history nerd, or just here for the drama, this episode is packed with fascinating insights, chaotic theories, and a little bit of queer speculation. 🎧 Listen now and decide for yourself, did Shakespeare have a secret gay lover?... and until next time, stay perfectly queer! Mar 12, 202649 min

Send us a message Welcome back to Let's Be Perfectly Queer Podcast , your go to LGBT Australian podcast for all things queer . In this powerful episode, we sit down with Dr. Anna Baeth and Ellie Roscher , co-authors of Fair Game: Trans Athletes and the Future of Sports , to unpack one of the most heated debates in the world right now: trans athletes in sport . Are transgender athletes “taking over” women’s sports? Are they stealing scholarships and medals? Is it really about fairness and safety, or is something else going on? We break down the biggest lies circulating in the media and politics, and look at what the actual research says. Spoiler: trans athletes make up less than 1% of participants, yet hundreds of laws have been proposed to exclude them. In this episode we explore: The data behind trans athlete participation Why the “fairness” argument doesn’t hold up How moral panic is manufactured The role of patriarchy and capitalism in sport Why controlling trans bodies is part of a bigger political agenda How trans athletes can actually help create a better, more inclusive sporting future We also talk about lived experience, what it feels like to move through sport in a transitioning body, the anxiety around locker rooms, and why movement and play are a human right. This episode is about more than sport. It’s about bodily autonomy, media misinformation, political fear-mongering, and what happens when we actually listen to trans athletes instead of talking about them. If you care about transgender rights, women’s sport, LGBTQIA+ inclusion, or the future of athletics, this is a conversation you need to hear. 🎧 Listen in and find out the truth about trans atheletes in sports... and until next time, stay perfectly queer! In this episode, we dive into a fascinating and often forgotten part of queer history: female husbands of the 18th and 19th centuries. Dec 25, 202530 min

Send us a message Welcome back to Let's Be Perfectly Queer Podcast , your go to LGBT Australian podcast for all things queer . To wrap up a huge season, we ditch the script entirely and spin a wheel of random, funny, and unexpectedly deep queer questions . From pop culture hot takes to queer nostalgia, internet debates, and reflecting on our own experiences, this episode is about ending the season on a lighter, more playful note, without ignoring the real conversations that matter. In this finale episode, we chat about: Whether you can be queer and still support JK Rowling If Taylor Swift is a queer icon or just brilliant at marketing Straight actors playing queer roles, does it matter? Queer childhood crushes and why they say so much about us Why lesbians love carabiners The queerest animals, drag names we never used, and chaotic pop culture opinions After a year filled with big conversations about queer history, trans rights, misinformation, media narratives, and politics, this episode was a lighter take on everything that is happening out there right now. No prep. No rules. Just two queer hosts, a spinning wheel, what could possibly go wrong? Send us a message Welcome back to Let's Be Perfectly Queer Podcast , your go to LGBT Australian podcast for all things queer . In this episode, we sit down with advocate, author and podcaster Todd Rennebohm to unpack one of Canada’s most heated political battlegrounds: Saskatchewan’s so-called “trans agenda.” Todd, a white cisgender straight man walks us through the province’s recent policies targeting transgender students, the backlash against queer-inclusive education, and how far-right rhetoric is shaping school environments across Canada.
