A tiny plaque, carved from mammoth ivory was dated to around 30,000 BCE. On its surface, a human figure stands in a pose that some researchers believe represents the constellation Orion. Deep within caves from that same era, paintings depict other familiar celestial forms, like Taurus, occupying the ancient sky then just as they do now. While it is nearly impossible to trace the exact moment our ancestors first looked up and traced these glowing patterns of light, astrology grew directly out of their deep desire to understand the universe and read the will of the gods. Across the globe, early human cultures interpreted the sky through their own unique lenses - tying starry shapes to local flora and fauna, weaving them into existing folk legends, or building brand new myths around the shapes they saw. There’s a particular joy in beach treasure: a rare shell, a shark’s egg sack, or an interesting rock - but what is extra special is finding a stone steeped in folk belief and holding it up to spy through it to the sea beyond. Witch stones, or, as they are commonly called, hag stones, have for centuries been believed to have magical uses. They have been called hex stones, lucky stones, pledge-stones or druid stones. In German, they are Hühnergötter, or "chicken gods,” but in Latin they were called silex pertussis, meaning "perforated flint. “ Some know them as Odin stones or eye stones, Cailleach stones, adder stones, or wish stones. Names vary from place to place, but they all tie into folk superstitions and beliefs. People felt there was something divine or otherworldly about a stone with a naturally occurring hole, and so they became symbols and tools of magical prowess, protection or warding against witchcraft... It has finally arrived. The formal beginning of the lighter half of the year, Bealtaine 2026, heralded the rise of the Flower moon, This name was originally given by the Algonquin people to the full moon in May thanks to the abundance of blooming flowers. Other names include the hare moon, the corn planting moon, and the milk moon. But this month has another, more significant moon to watch out for - the Blue moon. A Blue Moon is different from the monthly or seasonal moon names like the flower moon - it isn't restricted to a time of year. It is a movable feast. A full lunar cycle is a little over 28 days long. However, a calendar year is 365 days, which means that during some years, you may end up with thirteen full moons instead of twelve, depending on where in the month the lunar cycle falls. In the space between land and sea, the Finfolk are said to slip silently from their hidden kingdom, seeking humans to drag below the waves.” The Finfolk are a race unique to Orkney and Shetland, creatures of contradiction much like the islands themselves: part sea, part land, both wild and ordered. Amphibious and powerful, they can step from waves onto shore as they choose, living comfortably between two worlds. .Unlike the mermaids we might picture, Finfolk are fully humanoid - men and women alike -though their daughters sometimes appear with mermaid tails. Their bodies are draped with fins that fall like clothing, making it difficult to tell them from land-dwellers at a distance. Up close, the fins reveal their otherworldly nature.
