Meteorology, served with genuine excitement — Tornadoes, blizzards, heat domes, lightning: this is a podcast about the forces that drive our weather and the stories behind them. This podcast focuses on weather, especially extremes, and the way it interacts with forecasting. Much of the podcast focuses on the U.S.A. Local Chicago weather is sometimes included. Often a weather synopsis is given for the Midwest. Sometimes a weather synopsis is also given for the East Coast or West Coast. Occasionally, a synopsis is given for other locations within the United States, including the Gulf Coast. In recent months, the Jewish halachic times (called zmanim) have often been included. The Weather Report for Kids! 0:00 - The Giant Heat Dome! Imagine a giant, invisible dome of super hot air sitting right over the middle of our country. Scientists call this a "heat dome." It's making places like Oklahoma and Missouri super-duper hot. This big hot dome is also sliding westward towards Arizona. By Thursday, the desert city of Phoenix is going to feel like a giant oven! It will be over 110 degrees outside. If you live there, you definitely need to drink lots of water and stay in places with air conditioning. 1:03 - Cool Air to the Rescue & Thunder Boomers! But don't worry, cool air is on the way! A big push of chilly air, called a "cold front," is marching down from Canada. When this cold air crashes into the hot, sticky air, it will make big thunderstorms! Places like Iowa and the Dakotas are already seeing heavy rain and loud thunder. The rain can come down so fast it makes big puddles and even flooding. So, grab your umbrellas and rain boots! 1:39 - Snow in September?! Believe it or not, winter is already trying to peek out! High up in the mountains of Montana and Wyoming, the air is getting so chilly that the rain is going to turn into snow! Glacier National Park might even get up to 6 inches of fluffy white snow by the end of the week. It'll almost be time to build a snowman up there! 2:06 - Wild Weather in Alaska and Hawaii! In Hawaii, a big storm called Hurricane Loa is bringing heavy pouring rain and huge, crashing waves to the islands. And way up north in Alaska, a massive storm is bringing heavy rain and wind so strong it could almost blow off your hat! 2:30 - Crazy Weather Extremes! Weather can be really silly sometimes! In California, if you stand on the beach, you might need a sweater because it's only in the 60s (which is cool). But if you drive just a little bit away from the water, it's over 100 degrees and super hot! That's a 40-degree difference in just a short car ride! 3:10 - Frosty Mornings in Maine! Also, way up in the state of Maine, it will be so cold at night that there might be icy frost on the grass in the morning! That was a quick trip through the weather all across America! Thank you for listening to our super awesome weather show! And remember, always keep looking up at the clouds! Bye!
