  1. 255: Cognitive Distortions Q&A - Part 2 from The Successful Nurse Coaches ™, opens in a new tab

    Sep 14, 202640 min

In part 2 of the Cognitive Distortions Masterclass, Laura shares a step-by-step business roadmap from certification to first paying client, covering the four-phase timeline: weeks 1–12 for certification training, week 12+ for the business course where you set up your LLC and legal foundation, weeks 12–20 to learn enrollment conversations, and weeks 20–6 months for pro bono clients. She notes that 40% of graduates who follow this path have a paying client by six months. She then covers scope of practice — nurse coaching is not clinical care, and the distinction is your protection — and confirms you can coach outside your licensed state by working with out-of-state clients as a certified life coach. Client acquisition, she explains, is built on service: 20% of free clients convert to paying, and your first $100K will likely come from word of mouth and referrals rather than marketing. The episode pivots into the Nurse Coach Residency program — a 12–18 month, 3-trimester, 200-CEU business program. Trimester 1 covers business setup, visibility, 80 invitations, and your first 1–5 paying clients. Trimester 2 targets your first $10K through sales training and niche development. Trimester 3 is a capstone project with website, advanced marketing, and a community leadership component. Pricing is $5K per trimester or $12K total, and Laura confirms you can succeed without residency — the business course has all the information; residency just provides structure and accountability, like a personal trainer for your gym membership. The Q&A portion covers investment fears and cognitive distortions around price, including Laura's story of a nurse on food stamps who built a thriving practice; a detailed explanation of the 80 invitations for a recently laid-off nurse pursuing her MBA; an LVN asking about success without RN credentials and Nancy's story of kayak coaching and a $10K client. 2. 254: Cognitive Distortions: The Mindset of a Six-Figure Nurse Coach (Part 1) from The Successful Nurse Coaches ™, opens in a new tab

    Sep 7, 202647 min

In today’s episode, Laura teaches one of her favorite coaching concepts: cognitive distortions : the mental shortcuts and biased thought patterns that shape how we see ourselves and the world. Whether you're a brand-new nurse curious about coaching, a student in certification, or an established nurse coach, this episode breaks down the 10 most common cognitive distortions we see in ourselves and in the people around us. The 10 Cognitive Distortions All-or-Nothing Thinking : "If I can't commit 100%, there's no point starting." Reframe: Progress doesn't require perfection. Overgeneralization : "I'll never get a paid client." Reframe: One experience does not establish a pattern. Minimizing & Magnifying (Catastrophizing) : "If I invest and it doesn't work, I'll be homeless." Reframe: What's the most likely outcome? Shoulds : "I should have figured this out years ago." Reframe: The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now. Labeling : "My client didn't renew — I'm not good at this." Reframe: One outcome doesn't define your worth. If you're going to label, label positive. Jumping to Conclusions (Mind Reading & Fortune Telling) : "They're all judging me." Reframe: You're not a mind reader. Intuition is never fear-based; projection is. Discounting the Positive : "That client hiring me was just luck." Reframe: Stop systematically erasing evidence of your own competence. Blame & Personalization : "If she hadn't yelled at me, I wouldn't have been angry." Reframe: Clean up your side of the street. Take accountability for what's yours; release what isn't. Emotional Reasoning : "I feel like a fraud, so I must be one." Reframe: Feelings are data, not verdicts. Would your case hold up in court? Mental Filter : "Nine things went well but I said one awkward thing — that's all I can think about." Reframe: You're filtering out the 90% that worked. Widen the frame. 3. 253: Which Two Needs are Really Running your Life? Part 2 from The Successful Nurse Coaches ™, opens in a new tab

    Aug 31, 202622 min

In today’s episode, Laura continues with our series on the six human needs — this time focusing on how to use the model as a diagnostic tool in your coaching sessions to ask sharper questions and help clients get unstuck faster. In this episode: When a client "isn't making progress," ask: What is this behavior doing for them? Often it's meeting a deep need in a negative way. A powerful case study of a chronically ill client whose need for love was being met through sickness — and how uncovering that became the seed of her recovery. Why certainty and identity keep people stuck: Who am I without this problem? How to listen for "I need…" language cues, interrupt, and go deeper. Finding a healthier vehicle to meet the same need — so the old pattern is no longer necessary. A candid look at how these patterns show up in the instructor's own life and business. Nurse Coach Tip: Identify the top two human needs for each of your current clients. How are those needs being met — positively or negatively? 4. 252: The Six Basic Human Needs: The Hidden Drivers behind every decision you (and your clients make) Part 1 from The Successful Nurse Coaches ™, opens in a new tab

    Aug 24, 202630 min

In today’s episode of the Successful Nurse Coach Podcast , we kick off a series with Tony Robbins' framework of the six basic human needs. We explore what each need is, how they show up in our lives (both generatively and destructively), and why understanding your top two needs is essential for designing a life of intention and fulfillment. The Six Basic Human Needs: Certainty : The need for stability, security, and predictability. Knowing where your next meal, paycheck, or home is coming from. Uncertainty / Variety : The need for novelty, stimulation, and change. Without it, life feels like Groundhog's Day. Growth : The need to expand, learn, and evolve. Everything alive is either growing or dying. Shadow side: Never feeling satisfied, compulsive achievement at the cost of relationships. Generative side: Rocket fuel for impact and purpose. Significance : The need to feel important, special, and recognized. Love & Connection : The need to feel close to others. We're social creatures. Contribution : The desire to give beyond oneself and leave a legacy. Only those who prioritize growth and contribution report lasting fulfillment. Key Takeaways: Everyone has all six needs, but your top two are in the driver's seat — they shape your decisions, career path, and relationships. If your life doesn't satisfy your top two needs, you'll walk around in a "tolerable level of misery" and seek to get them met in either generative or destructive ways. The host's personal top two needs are growth and significance — and she shares how understanding this has explained patterns throughout her entire life. You don't need to change who you are; you need to understand who you are and harness your needs intentionally. Balance is a myth — we're always in motion. The goal is awareness and course-correction, not perfection. Growth + contribution are the two needs linked to lasting fulfillment. Without them, you'll eventually ask, "What's it all for?" In Part 2 of this series we will dive into how to identify your own top two needs and how they're quietly running your life. Stay tuned. 5. 251: Soft Nursing, Leaving the Bedside, and Why I Don't Believe in Work-Life Balance Anymore from The Successful Nurse Coaches ™, opens in a new tab

    Aug 17, 202642 min

In today’s episode, Laura shares how her experiences with burnout, chronic illness, and the limitations of traditional healthcare led her from ICU nursing to nurse coaching. She introduces the concept of "soft nursing," a proactive, relationship-based approach that focuses on root causes and whole-person healing rather than crisis management. Laura also challenges the idea of work-life balance, advocating instead for a life aligned with purpose and personal values. She offers an honest look at the realities of building a coaching practice and encourages nurses to explore new possibilities without feeling pressured to make an all-or-nothing leap. 6. 250: Don't Sell Yourself Masterclass Part 2 from The Successful Nurse Coaches ™, opens in a new tab

    Aug 10, 202614 min

In Part 2 of this workshop, Laura dives into one of the biggest mindset shifts entrepreneurs can make: separating self-promotion from idea promotion. While many coaches fear that marketing means constantly talking about themselves, Laura explains that the most impactful marketing isn't about being the center of attention—it's about championing ideas that genuinely help people. She explores how to build an authentic personal brand that grows over time, why visibility doesn't have to look like everyone else's, and how sharing your values, experiences, and unique perspectives creates trust with your audience. Laura also shares a powerful distinction between communicating your accomplishments from a place of confidence versus seeking validation, helping listeners reframe what it means to be visible in business without feeling "salesy." If you've struggled with showing up online or promoting your coaching practice, this episode offers a refreshing and practical approach that feels authentic, sustainable, and deeply aligned with your purpose. 7. 249: Don't Sell Yourself Masterclass Part 1 from The Successful Nurse Coaches ™, opens in a new tab

    Aug 3, 202643 min

In Part 1 of this masterclass, Laura explores the foundational mindset shifts that every aspiring nurse coach needs before building a thriving coaching practice. While it's easy to focus on certifications, business strategies, and marketing, lasting success begins with something much deeper: your own personal growth. Laura shares why becoming a coach isn't simply about learning new skills. It's about evolving your identity, expanding your self-awareness, and learning to lead yourself before leading others. She discusses the importance of embracing discomfort, challenging limiting beliefs, and recognizing that the transformation you experience personally becomes the greatest gift you can offer your future clients. Laura demonstrates how to use ChatGPT as a brainstorming partner to help articulate your ideas and turn them into engaging social media posts. Rather than starting with a blank page, she shows how you can ask ChatGPT to write several posts around a single coaching concept, then edit the results so they sound authentic to your voice. As AI learns your writing style over time, it becomes an increasingly valuable tool for generating ideas, overcoming writer's block, and creating content that reflects your unique perspective. The goal isn't to let AI replace your voice—it's to give you a strong starting point that you can personalize and make your own. Jul 6, 202633 min

What role does spirituality play in transformational nurse coaching? In Part 1 of this special three-part workshop series, we explore one of the most powerful topics in coaching: spirituality. Whether spirituality is central to your life or something you're only beginning to explore, this conversation creates space to examine your own beliefs without judgment. Through personal stories, research, and reflections from our nurse coaching community, we discuss how our spiritual beliefs influence the way we show up for ourselves and our clients. As coaches, we can only guide others as deeply as we've been willing to explore ourselves. This episode invites you to begin that journey with openness, curiosity, and compassion. In this episode, you'll learn: Why spirituality naturally emerges during transformational coaching The difference between spirituality and religion, and why they aren't always the same How your personal beliefs influence your coaching presence Why psychological safety is essential for both coaches and clients Common fears surrounding spirituality and religious trauma The concept of spiritual pluralism, exclusivism, and a new perspective called "perceptual exclusivism" Insights gathered from more than 120 nurse coaches about their spiritual beliefs and experiences Why cultivating your own inner work allows you to coach at a deeper level How resonance and personal energy impact every coaching conversation The most powerful coaching doesn't come from having all the answers. It comes from creating a safe space where both coach and client can explore life's deepest questions with curiosity, humility, and compassion. Jun 29, 202625 min

Do you need a better planner, or a completely different relationship with time? In today’s episode of The Successful Nurse Coach Podcast , Laura explores the powerful distinction between time management and time ownership. Drawing from her own experiences as a nurse, entrepreneur, mother, and leader, she challenges the belief that productivity problems can be solved with better systems, color-coded calendars, or the perfect morning routine. Instead, Laura introduces a deeper question: Who owns your time? For nurses transitioning into coaching, entrepreneurship, or any new chapter of growth, this conversation offers a refreshing perspective on overwhelm, freedom, self-leadership, and the responsibility that comes with creating a life by design rather than by default. 15. 241: The Real Math of a Nurse Coaching Practice (What Six Figures Actually Looks Like) from The Successful Nurse Coaches ™, opens in a new tab

    Jun 8, 202632 min

In today’s episode, Laura breaks down the real math behind building a profitable nurse coaching practice while cutting through fear and uncertainty to show you exactly what it takes to replace (and exceed) a traditional nursing income. Why it's "simple, not easy" - The framework for success is straightforward; what's hard is the internal shift in identity, fear of rejection, and limiting beliefs Traditional nursing income vs. coaching income - A nurse earning ~$40/hr working 36 hrs/week makes ~$74K/year; 10 coaching clients can generate the same income working far fewer hours Real pricing numbers: New grad: $1,800/package → $72K/year (10 clients) Mid-career: $2,500/package → $100K/year Established (2–3+ years): $3,000/package → $120K/year Time breakdown — Full-time practice = 20–25 hrs/week total; 10 clients at 90 min/session = ~15 hrs of direct client work per month Part-time model — 5–8 clients is fully achievable alongside other commitments The 5-year projection — Why nurse coaching outpaces traditional nursing paths long-term Reverse engineering $10K/month — At a $2,500 package, you need 4 "yes" conversations, ~16 proposals, and 40–60 invites per month (2–3 hours of outreach) The tugboat vs. lighthouse shift — Early on you invite people in; over time, clients come to you Top 5 Fears Laura Addresses "I'm an introvert" — Coaching is built for introverts "I suck at sales" — Sales is a learnable skill; nurse coaches call it advocacy "Who can afford coaching?" — Coaching is a $2.2B industry and tends to be recession-proof "I feel guilty charging" — Why charging clients is actually an act of belief in them "I'm an imposter" — Why imposter syndrome signals high intelligence and capacity for growth The math isn't complicated. The work is internal. Every action you take to build your practice also transforms you into a more grounded, confident, healed version of yourself, and that's the greatest gift of the coaching modality. Jun 1, 202620 min

In today’s episode of the Successful Nurse Coach Podcast , Laura dives into the power of identity and how the roles, systems, and environments around us quietly shape who we become. Laura shares personal stories from her nursing career, including the realities of working through exhaustion, pregnancy, and people-pleasing tendencies, while unpacking how many nurses unknowingly adopt identities that leave them feeling stuck, disconnected, and misaligned. This conversation explores the difference between living by default versus intentionally creating the version of yourself you truly want to become. From nurse to coach, employee to leader, Laura explains why lasting transformation starts with identity first, not strategy. If you’ve ever felt like you’ve outgrown your current reality, this episode will challenge you to rethink who you are becoming and what is actually possible for your life. May 25, 202647 min

In today’s episode , Shelby sits down with Kris Christie, a recent graduate of The Nurse Coach Residency program, to hear her inspiring story of becoming a board-certified nurse coach while working full-time as a public health nurse. Kris became a nurse in her late 40s after working as a caregiver and discovering a passion for healthcare. She holds a Master's in Nursing (Clinical Nurse Leader track) from USF and has spent six years as a public health nurse. She also serves as an administrator for an adult day healthcare program and runs a music-filled, three-dog household. We talk about: How Kris came to nursing in her late 40s and why she was drawn to preventative medicine and chronic disease management Her experience hiring a nurse coach in 2022 — and why it changed her life personally more than professionally The "victim mindset" and perfectionism patterns she recognized in herself (and now sees in her clients) Why she specifically wanted a nurse coach — not just any life coach How she managed 8–12 hours per week of coursework on top of a full-time job and a packed personal life The moment she realized she was "being selfish" by not offering her coaching services to people who were waiting for them Her sliding scale model: charging market rate for 80% of clients, sliding scale for 20% — so no one is excluded Breaking through the belief that offering your services = bothering people Why her strong community roots led to fast referrals and organic client growth Her #1 piece of advice to other nurse coaches: your future self can't emerge if you're blocking her with old beliefs Watch the full episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/y5PjuhmPnXM Connect with us: Instagram: @successfulnursecoaches Website: www.thesuccessfulnursecoaches.com Join our Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/thesuccessfulnursecoach Mentioned in this episode: NCR + Cohort 8 https://www.nurselifecoachacademy.com/

Melissa Parsons spent more than two decades in nursing, from trauma and cath lab to becoming a nurse practitioner. But after years of feeling increasingly disconnected from the kind of healing she truly wanted to offer, she reached a breaking point. In this conversation with Shelby, Melissa shares the deeply personal journey that led her toward nurse coaching, spirituality, and building a business rooted in genuine human connection. Together, they unpack the fear of being seen, the vulnerability of inviting people into coaching, and the surprising healing that can happen when nurses finally feel heard themselves. In this episode, we talk about: Leaving a misaligned nursing career after 22 years The moment Melissa realized she couldn’t keep doing things the same way Why spirituality and purpose became central to her healing journey The vulnerability of coaching friends, coworkers, and family members The difference between “cold” marketing and leading with real connection Fear, uncertainty, and building a business without guaranteed outcomes Burnout, grief, and the emotional weight nurses carry without debriefing How nurse coaching creates space for deeper healing and human connection Melissa’s story is an honest reminder that sometimes the discomfort we feel is pointing us toward something more aligned. This episode is for the nurse who knows they’re meant for more, even if they can’t fully explain it yet. “Because if you’re living in fear, you’re not fully here”. What happens when you stop waiting to feel ready, and just go all in anyway? Colleen, a pediatric nurse turned nurse coach, shares her raw and honest journey from certification to building a thriving coaching practice. In this conversation with Shelby, she opens up about fear, visibility, investing in herself, and what it actually takes to go from “thinking about it” to signing paying clients while still working full-time. This episode is a real behind-the-scenes look at what it means to step into leadership, trust the process, and build something meaningful even when it feels uncomfortable. In this episode, we talk about: Moving straight from certification into business and why momentum matters The fear of being seen online and hitting “post” anyway Why your first clients won’t come from posting, but from reaching out What it really takes to sign your first paying clients Learning to sit with fear instead of waiting for it to disappear The power of repetition, feedback, and watching your own growth in real time Building a coaching business while working full-time and managing real life Shifting from getting clients to becoming an exceptional coach Colleen’s story is a powerful reminder that confidence doesn’t come first. Action does. And when you’re willing to show up, feel the fear, and keep going anyway, everything starts to change. May 4, 202622 min

In this final part of the money consciousness series, Laura uncovers the hidden beliefs that quietly repel money, including judging wealthy people, fearing disconnection from others, and believing money is limited. She shows how these patterns are rooted in identity and the need to feel safe and accepted, not in a lack of strategy. Through personal stories and coaching insights, Laura highlights how thoughts like “more money means more responsibility” or questioning if it’s okay to earn more can lead to self sabotage and staying small. She also reframes financial freedom as an internal state rather than a specific number. The episode closes with a powerful reminder that shifting your relationship with money starts within. When you create safety, expand your capacity, and challenge limiting beliefs, earning and receiving become far more natural and aligned.
