Push factors are conditions that encourage or force people to leave their home country or region. Pull factors are conditions that attract people to a new destination. In reality, migration decisions are usually influenced by a combination of both. For example, a young person from a rural village might leave because there are few employment opportunities at home (a push factor) while being attracted by the prospect of higher wages and better education in a city (a pull factor). Mountains rise, oceans widen, volcanoes erupt, and earthquakes shake the ground because the outer layer of our planet is broken into moving sections called tectonic plates. These movements occur extremely slowly — usually only a few centimetres each year — yet over millions of years they completely reshape the surface of the Earth. The theory of plate tectonics is now one of the most important ideas in geography and geology because it explains the distribution of earthquakes, volcanoes, mountain ranges, and ocean basins. It also helps scientists understand how continents have moved across the planet over geological time and why tectonic hazards threaten millions of people today. This is exactly what can happen during an El Niño event. El Niño is one of the most powerful natural climate phenomena on Earth. It is part of a larger system known as the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) , which involves interactions between the Pacific Ocean and the atmosphere above it. Although it begins in the tropical Pacific Ocean, its effects can be felt across the globe. For geographers, El Niño provides an excellent example of how interconnected the Earth’s systems are. Today we’re exploring one of the most important demographic challenges facing modern societies — ageing populations and the old‑age dependency ratio. This ratio compares the number of people aged 65 and over with the number of working‑age people, usually defined as those aged 15 to 64. It doesn’t mean that every older person is dependent or that every working‑age person has a job, but it gives us a useful snapshot of how much pressure there may be on the labour force. What the Ratio Tells Us When the ratio rises, it means there are more older people relative to workers. That can affect everything from pension systems and healthcare to tax revenues and economic growth. In Europe, for example, the European Central Bank reports that ageing‑related costs in the euro area are projected to rise from 25.1% of GDP in 2022 to 26.5% by 2070. That might sound small, but it represents billions of euros — and it’s enough to slow potential economic growth as the contribution from the working‑age population becomes negative. How Ageing Populations Affect Society Let’s break down the impacts: Pensions: More retirees mean higher costs for governments and pension funds. Healthcare and social care: Older populations need more medical support and long‑term care. Tax revenues: Fewer workers can mean less money coming in to fund public services. Housing design: Homes need to be more accessible and adapted for mobility. Public transport: Systems must cater for older passengers with safety and comfort in mind. Labour supply: A smaller workforce can limit productivity and innovation. Economic growth: With fewer people working, economies may struggle to expand. These changes ripple through every part of society — from how cities are planned to how governments balance their budgets. Government Responses So, what can governments do? There’s no easy answer, and every option comes with trade‑offs. Increasing the retirement age keeps people in work longer and boosts tax revenue, but it’s unpopular, especially for those in physically demanding jobs. Raising taxes can fund pensions and healthcare, but workers and businesses often resist. Reducing pension benefits lowers public spending but risks increasing poverty among older people. Encouraging older people to remain in work helps maintain skills and experience, but requires flexible employment policies. Boosting productivity through technology can offset labour shortages, though it demands investment and training. Attracting workers through migration can strengthen the workforce, but it’s politically sensitive in many countries. Each of these strategies reflects a balancing act between economic necessity and social fairness. The Bigger Picture Ageing populations are not just a European issue — they’re a global trend. As fertility rates fall and life expectancy rises, more countries will face similar challenges. The old‑age dependency ratio reminds us that demographic change isn’t just about numbers; it’s about how societies adapt to new realities. It affects how we design our homes, plan our cities, and think about work and retirement. Closing Thought The key takeaway is this: ageing is inevitable, but decline doesn’t have to be.     Send us Fan Mail Mangrove Forests: The Amazing Comeback of Nature's Coastal Guardians Imagine a forest that can protect people from tsunamis, provide homes for thousands of marine animals, and help fight climate change all at the same time. It might sound like something out of a superhero movie, but these forests really exist. They are called mangrove forests , and after decades of destruction, they are making an incredible comeback. A Forest in Trouble For much of the last century, mangrove forests were disappearing at an alarming rate. Across tropical coastlines, these unique forests were cleared to make way for fish farms, agriculture, housing developments, and growing cities. Scientists became increasingly worried that mangroves could continue shrinking until very little remained. Between the 1980s and 2010, more than 12,000 square kilometres of mangrove forest were destroyed across Asia, Africa, and the Americas—an area roughly the size of Jamaica. The loss of these forests was not just bad news for wildlife. Coastal communities also lost an important natural defence against storms and flooding. What Makes Mangroves So Special? Mangroves are trees and shrubs that grow where land meets the sea. Their twisted roots rise above muddy coastal waters, creating one of the most distinctive ecosystems on Earth. Although rainforests often receive more attention, mangroves play an equally important role in protecting the environment. These remarkable forests: Absorb and store huge amounts of carbon dioxide, helping to slow climate change. Protect coastlines from erosion, storm surges, and tsunamis. Provide safe nursery habitats for fish, crabs, and other marine species. Support the livelihoods of millions of people who depend on fishing and coastal resources. In fact, scientists estimate that mangroves can store up to five times more carbon than many land-based forests, making them powerful allies in the fight against global warming. The Good News: Mangroves Are Recovering In a surprising turn of events, scientists have discovered that mangrove forests are recovering faster than expected. Since 2010, the world has gained more mangrove forest area than it has lost. This is an encouraging example of how ecosystems can recover when given the chance. One reason for this recovery is that mangroves are naturally resilient. When people stop cutting them down and damaging their habitats, many mangrove forests can regenerate on their own.     Send us Fan Mail External weathering and erosion processes gradually become the dominant factors in the development of the landscape as tectonic activity ceases or becomes very slow. The influence of geology remains important but passes to a more detailed level in which’ rock type (lithology) and structure may strongly influence local relief features. In all landscapes, the critical factor is not so much the absolute resistance of a rock as its resistance relative to the rocks around it. It is this which creates the pattern of high and low relief. For instance, in south-east England, chalk is a relatively resistant rock in relation to adjacent strata, but in Northern Ireland, it is soft compared to surrounding basalts. The granite, clays and limestones that form the landscapes are found in entirely different environments today from those in which they originated. In 2025, about one in four new cars sold worldwide was electric, up from one in five the year before. That is a major change in transport geography because it shows how quickly technology can spread from one country to another. It’s about where the disease starts, how it spreads, and why some places are much harder to protect than others. In 2026, Central Africa was dealing with a fast-growing Ebola outbreak, with most cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and some spreading into Uganda. Within weeks, the number of cases rose sharply. So what makes Ebola so dangerous, and why is geography such a big part of the story?
