The Klondike Gold Rush History Podcast was a labour of love between two Yukoners who share a deep-rooted passion for local history. Produced by Pascale Halliday and her father, Keith, the 22-episode series guides listeners on an epic journey from the origins of the greatest gold rush the world has ever known to its apogee during Dawson City’s salad days of ’98. And, of course, they can’t get from one to the other without spending some nerve-wracking time on the Yukon River. From an interview near the famed manes of the now-tamed White Horse Rapids, Pascale reflects on her personal connection to the gold rush and the family affair of the podcast’s production. Now the author of two books and many articles in major publications, Eva Holland was just getting started in 2012. That’s when she was offered a 10-month back-fill position with Up Here magazine. “It was the break I was waiting for,” she says, “and I spent those months in an informal feature-writing boot-camp.” In this episode, Eva chats with The YUKON Magazine’s co-publisher, Tammo Walter, about her evolution as a northern writer and what it means to “write the North.” She then reads a timeless story titled “I Found the Sweet Life,” which chronicles a week she spent among Skagway’s seasonal workers during her “boot-camp” era more than a decade ago. Originally published in Up Here , this piece also appears in Eva’s collection No Sleep ‘Til Fairbanks . "This story,” she explains, “was my first foray into the sort of immersive first-person reporting that would become my trademark.” The rest is history. Gravel biking may feel like a relatively new corner of cycling, but in many ways it brings the sport back to where it started: rough roads, mixed surfaces, long distances, and a little uncertainty about what comes next. With the Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay coming up on June 20th, from Haines Junction to Haines, cycling is very much on our radar. And while KCIBR is not a gravel ride, the Yukon has more than enough rough roads, back roads, construction zones, and in-between terrain to make a gravel bike feel right at home. In temperatures below -50°C and help not available or far away everything matters. A lot. As part of Operation Nanook-Nunalivut 2026, a team of Canadian Rangers crossed more than 5,200 kilometres of Arctic wilderness by snowmobile. For 52 days they traveled along parts of the Northwest Passage where weather, equipment failure or one wrong decision can quickly into a very serious situation. Three Yukon Rangers, Maya Poirier, Philippe Brient and Dan Beaudoin, reflect on the longest Arctic patrol ever conducted by the Canadian Armed Forces. They talk about navigating in whiteout conditions, setting up tents, constant dangers, arriving in remote northern communities, and what surprised them most traveling for an extended period of time in extreme conditions. A conversation about endurance, teamwork, survival, and a part of Canada most people know little about and will never experience firsthand. Each spring, northern rivers go from solid ice to flowing water. In the best-case scenario this process goes smoothly but if ice jams form, there can be trouble. We first ran this conversation with Holly Goulding, senior hydrologist with the Government of Yukon, in February 2023. Given the winter the territory just came through, it felt like the right time to bring it back. "It was supposed to be a two-week workin' vacation," says musician Ryan West of his first trip to the Yukon." That was 2009. It's 2026 now, so it's been a long two weeks." One of the reasons Ryan stayed was the community—musical and otherwise—that he discovered at Whitehorse's iconic 98 Hotel . They built their reputation playing live gigs around the North—from the Southeast Alaska State Fair, to the iconic 98 Hotel, to Folk on the Rocks. Next up, it’s opening for Tom Cochrane at his April 5 show in Whitehorse. But Cows Go Moo is no stranger to the studio, either. In May 2024, life took the band’s six teenage members down two highways (the Alaska and North Klondike) to their second recording session at Green Needle Records . In this episode, you’ll hear the Cows and hard workin’ producer Jim Holland workin’ hard to rock hard on a hard rock track that really works. Jim asked the band for everything but “more cowbell”… and they udderly delivered. The finished product is Cows Go Moo’s most recent self-composed single, “The Forgotten.” (You can call it “James Hetfield Takes a Bath with His Guitar and Amp,” if you prefer.) A story about Cows Go Moo also appears in the spring 2025 issue of The YUKON Magazine. The band was previously featured on this podcast in an separate April 2023 episode titled "Hard rock minors."
