  1. Larry Cohen on Partners, Postmortems and Playing Nice from Sorry, Partner, opens in a new tab

    Sep 17, 202639 min

In the final episode of Should I Play or Should I Go?, Catherine talks with bridge legend, teacher and author Larry Cohen. Larry recalls almost giving up bridge at 14 after an upsetting experience at his second duplicate game, and explains why creating a welcoming environment has become such an important part of his approach to teaching and playing. He offers practical advice on handling an overcritical partner, resisting the urge to believe every postmortem you hear, and remembering that the person telling you what you did wrong may not actually be right. He also explains why berating a partner is not only unpleasant, but likely to make them play worse. And, as the series comes to a close, Catherine takes stock of what she has learned, reconsiders the comment that started all this, and asks what it means for the way she approaches bridge from here. Plus, other bridge players share some memorable encounters of their own. Thanks to: Kitty Muntz, Geoff Sadler, Victoria, David Adler and Joan Dziekanski. The Bridge Song at the end of the episode is by Ruvaan Malkani. Here are a few resources on keeping bridge enjoyable for everyone: World Bridge Federation: Laws of Duplicate Bridge Larry Cohen: 21 Rules of Being a Good Partner Karen Walker: Table Feel : A thoughtful look at the subtler side of behaviour at the bridge table. Aug 27, 202642 min

Should I Play or Should I Go? is a four-part mini-series about rudeness, rejection and confidence at the bridge table, created, produced and hosted by Catherine Harris. A few weeks ago, something was said at the bridge table that I couldn’t let go. I’ve experienced worse, so why couldn’t I shake it? In this first episode of Should I Play or Should I Go? , I talk to my longtime bridge teacher, Australian champion Andrew Mill, about confidence, criticism and the strange experience of trying to get better at something you love while becoming increasingly aware of how much you still have to learn. Plus, other bridge players share some memorable encounters of their own. Thanks to Daniel Lev, Nikki Hudak, Stephanie Culbertson, Lorraine Cable and Em Barbenel. Also, some time ago I wrote about taking bridge lessons with Andrew. 20. Sorry, Partner wins the Alan Truscott Memorial Award from Sorry, Partner, opens in a new tab

    Jan 9, 20261 min

We are absolutely thrilled to announce that Sorry, Partner has won the IBPA Alan Truscott Memorial Award . Alan Truscott was the long-time bridge editor of The New York Times, and was an IBPA Executive member, serving as its president from 1981 to 1985. The Alan Truscott Memorial Award is presented periodically to an individual or organisation that, in the opinion of the IBPA Executive, has done something in the world of bridge that Alan would have approved of and appreciated. Thank you to the IBPA for this recognition. This honour reflects the generosity of our guests, the loyalty of our listeners, and the global bridge community that has welcomed the show so warmly since its launch. What began as a conversation between two bridge partners has grown into a program heard in more than 170 countries, and we’re deeply grateful for that support. Thank you to everyone who listens, shares the show, writes to us, and champions thoughtful, independent audio. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/sorry-partner . Hosted on Acast.
