This is part 3 of a discussion I have been having with Vickey Young, a disabled woman who is trying to go to get her accommodations to go to law school and the incredible amount of work she has to do to overcome the obstacles she faces to something that is her rights to have. It is shocking that after nearly 40 years after disabled people have fought to have their rights to an education, it is shocking to hear how much ableism she deals with to get her rights.

We had a great discussion with Jess Speer on The 103.3 Asheville FM show Open Air about how we must look at disability now, our new disabled ancestor Judy Heumann the Mother of Disability Rights, and how disability is part of the human experience, like being born and dying.

n this episode, Vickey Young and I discuss our experiences with doctors and how frustrating it can be when you are knowledgeable about your condition. Still, you need a doctor to help you manage your disability to continue to be a productive disabled person in your community.

Amanda Harrinauth is a life coach, poet, and fantastic person. I was honored to be able to take some time to get to know her better. As a disabled person who has had to navigate life, she shows us how perseverance and having a positive outlook on life can lead to great things. Besides being a spokesperson for the Special Olympics, most recently Amanda was acknowledged by Joe Biden for her poetry after being told her poetry was not poetry. I got together with Vickey Young and she and I talk about what experiences we have with accommodations with work and education. We did this about a month before Vickey started law school. Part 2 we will talk about what Vickey has to manage to get the accommodations to become lawyer.

I had a Great discussion with Oji Dannelley. Oji is the wheelchair dancer, A mother, and grandmother. She is also a disability activist we talk about a lot of things that we deal with as disabled people. The ableism in that exists in the world of medicine, the lack of accessibility in the world and the negative stigmas associated with different ability tools that disabled people use, and lot more. We also talked about some of the techniques he learned growing up. He also talks how important it is to realize when you have ANY disability it does not mean you are not capable. This episode of This Crip Life is a talk I had with Freddie Ladner. I met him during the pandemic an we came quickly became friends. Freddie was born with cerebral palsy and we talk about different things he has experienced in his life. Universal design is the design of buildings products or environments to make them accessible to all people, Regardless of age, Disability, Or other factors. While curb cuts wheelchair ramps closed captioning an image descriptions are all very important to include people in our communities that wouldn’t be able to without these things when we talk about universal design for learning we still need to think about how we do that without losing the reason it was created. To give disabled people equal Rights to non-disabled people. I do a deep dive into the idea of universal design in education with our favorite deep diver Vickey Young. Listen and learn :)

Even though the ADA was passed 31 years ago accessibility is still a huge problem for disable people. Cassie Wilson is disabled and decided to take action and create accessibility for herself. She created a group called half access and as recently turn it into a nonprofit. It is a resource for venues and their accessibility. I was approved for standing wheelchair! Medicare and Medicaid usually don't pay for something like this because they don't consider it medically necessary. I got together with my physical therapist, Barbra Crume, who is specializes in seating and we talked about how people get the equipment they need and why it's so important to be fit for a wheelchair that supports your body. In this podcast we also discussed how Barbara worked for one medical facility that was bought out and they close the Seating Clinic. She decided to continue to do what she does and we're so grateful for that. She decided to continue her work at Mountain Care services.
