Former PGA Tour pro David Canipe, The Confidence Doctor Dr. Bob Winters, and original Golf Channel creative force Michael J. Whelan join me for an episode filled with great stories, mental-game advice, and a trip through golf history. We start with David Canipe , a three-year letterman at the University of Georgia who helped the Bulldogs win the 1972 SEC Championship before beginning a professional career that epitomized what it meant to be a grinder. David takes us back to the old Space Coast Tour, where he estimates he won 25 times, and shares what it took to make it through PGA Tour Q-School three different times. We also hear about playing alongside Bill Kratzert at Georgia, the incredible field he faced at his first Q-School in 1976, and some of the biggest moments of his PGA Tour career—including becoming the early leader at the 1984 U.S. Open, finishing T4 at the 1988 Las Vegas Invitational, making the cut at Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial Tournament, and taking the 54-hole lead into Sunday at the 1989 Southern Open. Then, The Confidence Doctor, Dr. Bob Winters , returns with a mental-game lesson every golfer needs to hear: stop playing holes that haven't happened yet. We've all done it. Three holes to go and suddenly we're calculating what we need to shoot to break a milestone score, win the tournament, or finally beat our buddies. Dr. Bob explains why getting ahead of ourselves can derail a great round, how to stay present when the pressure builds, and even shares a simple rubber-band trick that can help bring your mind back to the shot in front of you. Finally, Michael J. Whelan returns to take us inside his fascinating new book, The Fairways of Wisdom . Mike was the guy behind everything when The Golf Channel launched in the mid-1990s, creating its original programming and assembling the talent both in front of and behind the cameras. His remarkable television career also includes HBO, CBS, and NBC. In The Fairways of Wisdom , Mike combines that lifetime of storytelling with his love of golf, playing 9 holes with 9 legends and exploring the lessons and wisdom they might share. Three terrific guests. PGA Tour stories from a true grinder. A mental-game lesson you can use during your very next round. And a creative journey alongside some of golf's greatest legends. It's all here on Next on the Tee—where golf legends live and your game gets better. Thank you for pressing play and taking the journey with us.
The professional golf season may be winding down, but Next on the Tee never sleeps. This week, I’m joined by three outstanding guests bringing us great golf instruction, leadership insights, legendary stories, and a fascinating look at innovation in sports. Resident Director of Instruction Tom Patri , a Golf Magazine Top 100 Alumni Instructor, is back to talk about the Player of the Year conversation—who belongs in it, who could sneak into the discussion, and what we can learn from Ryan Fox’s swing. TP also explains something that hurts golfers at every level: tension . We’ll talk about how tension destroys motion and what you can do to free up your swing and play better golf. Then, Tom Wildenhaus , Director of Golf at Olde Florida Golf Club, PGA Master Professional, and member of the South Florida PGA Hall of Fame, joins me for a conversation that goes beyond the golf swing. Tom shares his perspective on leadership, including some important do’s and don’ts for creating the kind of culture and experience that keeps members and guests coming back. We’ll also cross over into the football world with longtime friend Lee Hanson, Co-Founder of Guardian Caps . We have been longtime believers in Guardian Caps. Lee and Erin Hanson started the company back in 2011. We first met them on Thursday Night Tailgate (football show) back in 2012 and have been tooting their horn ever since. You’ve probably seen their protective helmet covers being worn by players from youth football all the way to the NFL. Lee takes us back to their early days, the journey to acceptance, and what's behind the innovation designed to help make the game safer—and there’s a great golf connection too. His company manufactures urethane covers for several golf ball brands, and Lee was also involved in helping Dick’s Sporting Goods bring the Maxfli brand back to life. Golf instruction, Player of the Year debate, club leadership, sports safety innovation, golf ball technology, and plenty of great stories—it’s all packed into this edition of Next on the Tee…where golf legends live and your game gets better. Thank you for pressing play and taking the journey with us.
Power off the tee. Power between the ears. 8-time Canadian Long Drive Champion Lisa “Longball” Vlooswyk returns to Next on the Tee to share what years of competing under pressure taught her about generating speed, handling nerves, creating more distance, and bouncing back after a bad swing. Lisa also shares a simple way everyday golfers can create more clubhead speed—without swinging out of their shoes. Then, Dr. Jim Afremow and Emmy-nominated writer Phil White make their Next on the Tee debut to discuss their new book, The Daily Champion’s Mind . We dive into building real confidence, embracing pressure, overcoming doubt, resetting after mistakes, avoiding analysis paralysis, and separating who you are from how you performed. Plus, we head to Augusta National to explore the mental challenge of The Masters and what happens when a player realizes, I can actually win this thing. Distance. Confidence. Mental toughness. Gratitude. And, of course, a healthy dose of Vitamin G . It’s all on this edition of Next on the Tee—where golf legends live and your game gets better.
Opening up the Next on the Tee Legends Vault as 1989 Open Champion and PGA Tour legend Mark Calcavecchia takes us inside one of the hottest stretches of golf in PGA Tour history. At the 2009 RBC Canadian Open , Mark Calcavecchia made an incredible nine consecutive birdies , setting a PGA Tour record —and making the moment even more special, his son Eric was on the bag as his caddie . Calc shares the story behind the record-setting birdie streak, if the rest of the group treated him like a pitcher throwing a no-hitter, and the hilarious story of what his son said to him as he stood on the tee after tying the record of 8 straight. Hear the story directly from the man who lived it on Next on the Tee: Legends Vault , featuring legendary players, unforgettable golf stories, and moments from the history of the game.
This week on Next on the Tee , we’re working on two areas that can make a huge difference in the game: what happens between our ears and how we develop the next generation of golfers. Mindset expert Ricky Kalmon , author of the upcoming Leverage Your Mindset for Golfers , Breaking Mental Barriers and Elevating Your Game , shares ways to quiet negative thoughts, handle pressure, recover from bad shots, and stop letting that one dreaded hole beat us before we even get there. Ricky explains “AutoThoughts,” the importance of a strong mental routine, and why sometimes the most powerful thing we can tell ourselves is simply, “I got this.” Then Lee-Anne Gilchrist , CEO of the Golf Performance Academy, joins me for an important conversation about developing junior golfers. We talk about recognizing talent and desire, building their confidence, focusing on development instead of scores, and how parents can support their young players without unknowingly adding pressure. Two great teachers. Two different sides of the game. One episode packed with advice to help us play better—and help the next generation grow. Thank you for pressing play and joining me on Next on the Tee—where golf legends live and your game gets better.
Golf mental game meets unforgettable PGA Tour stories as 1989 Open Champion Mark Calcavecchia and “The Confidence Doctor” Dr. Bob Winters return to Next on the Tee . Dr. Bob shares a powerful lesson on how ego can hurt your golf game , particularly on the greens. Using stories and wisdom from legends including Arnold Palmer, Bruce Crampton, Doug Sanders, and Jean Van de Velde , he explains how putting your ego aside can lead to better decisions, more confidence, and lower scores. Then Mark Calcavecchia takes us inside some remarkable moments from his PGA Tour career . We revisit his record nine consecutive birdies at the 2009 Canadian Open at Glen Abbey , including the hilarious story of what was happening inside his group as the streak kept growing. Mark also takes us back to his dominant 2001 Phoenix Open victory , when he shot 60 and ultimately won by eight over Rocco Mediate. When did he realize 59 was within reach? And how did he avoid becoming another player who surrendered a huge Sunday lead? Mark explains why, like Arnold Palmer, his philosophy was simple: keep attacking. Plus, Mark shares his thoughts on the proposed PGA Tour changes for 2028 , the possibility of promotion and relegation between the Championship and Challenger Series, and whether we'll continue seeing him on PGA Tour Champions in 2027 . It's golf psychology, putting confidence, PGA Tour history, legendary stories, and plenty of laughs with two longtime favorites. Next on the Tee — Where Golf Legends Live & Your Game Gets Better.
Your best golf shot may be lying to you. ⛳ You hit that 7-iron 160 yards once—or maybe a few times—so when the GPS says 160, what club comes out of the bag? But what if your normal 7-iron goes 150–155? How about that 10-20 yard chip shot that's hard to dial in. Those are just a couple of topics two of the very best instructors help you with on this episode of Next on the Tee... My gumba Rob Strano returns for an incredible 26th appearance. Rob and I get into why he grinds the heel of his wedges, plus he shares tips to hit better chips, how to play uneven lies, and why AimPoint gets a bad rap. We also talk Jordan Spieth, and the proposed changes coming to the PGA Tour in 2028. Then PGA Master Professional John Hughes joins me . We talk about playing for the golfer we actually are instead of the golfer we hope shows up that day—and why better course management may save us more strokes than another swing change. Two outstanding teachers, and better people. A ton of useful golf instruction. Plenty of laughs. And, of course, a healthy dose of Vitamin G. 🎙️ Your Best Golf Shot Is Lying to You Listen now to Next on the Tee — Where Golf Legends Live & Your Game Gets Better, wherever you get your podcast content. #Golf #GolfPodcast #GolfInstruction #GolfTips #PGA #PGATour #ShortGame #CourseManagement

Len talks about the legends who filled that leaderboard, from Ben Hogan to a very young Johnny Miller. From that gripping story, we shift to tales about the '66 baseball season and a couple of stories near and dear to my heart about Pirates greats Woodie Fryman and Dale Long. We dive way inside Long's stretch of 8 home runs in 8 consecutive games, a record that's been tied but never broken, and what kept Long in the minor leagues so long. What does it take to tell one of the greatest sports stories ever put on film? And what does it take to prepare today's young athletes for success in a world where talent alone isn't enough? This week on Next on the Tee , I have two extraordinary guests who answer those questions from very different perspectives. First, legendary producer and former HBO Sports President Ross Greenburg returns to the show. Ross has won well over 100 major television awards and created some of the finest sports documentaries ever produced. We catch up on his upcoming documentary, The 99ers , celebrating the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team that captured the 1999 World Cup and changed women's sports forever. As a huge fan of the movie Miracle , I couldn't resist asking Ross to take us behind the scenes of bringing one of the greatest moments in sports history to life. We relive the unforgettable Miracle on Ice, celebrate Team USA's recent Olympic gold medal, and talk about why that incredible story still resonates decades later. Ross also shares updates on his outstanding USGA documentaries and, exclusively on Next on the Tee , announces his newest project—a golf book exploring the little "creative interpretations" many of us have with the Rules of Golf. If you've ever improved a lie, taken a generous drop, or found yourself reaching for an "executive mulligan," you'll definitely want to hear what's coming. Then I'm joined by 2-time Emmy Award-winning broadcaster Stephanie Grady , making her Next on the Tee debut. Stephanie's journey is remarkable. A nationally accomplished junior figure skater whose Olympic dreams were cut short by injury, she switched her focus to broadcast journalism at Penn State, became an award-winning television news anchor before making another bold career change. Today, she and her husband help high school and college athletes successfully navigate the rapidly changing NIL landscape through their company, Influential Athlete. Our conversation goes far beyond endorsement deals. Stephanie shares practical advice for athletes and parents about building confidence without creating entitlement, handling media interviews, developing a personal brand, making smart decisions off the field, and avoiding the pitfalls that can derail promising careers. We also discuss one of the biggest challenges facing young athletes today—how the choices they make after the game or after midnight can impact everything they've worked so hard to achieve. You know what I always say: nothing good ever happens after midnight... Whether you're a golfer, sports fan, parent, coach, or simply someone who enjoys hearing remarkable people share the lessons they've learned at the highest levels of competition and broadcasting, this episode is packed with stories, wisdom, and inspiration. So settle in, relax, and let us take your mind off everything else for the next hour. Leading off is our Resident Director of Instruction, Tom Patri. I start off the segment by asking TP to explain his "why" behind doing what he does. From there, I ask him to explain the phrase "great ball striker," and isn't everyone on Tour a great ball striker?
