Welcome to Gazpacho Andaluz! In this episode, we're bringing you the adventures that Marcos had at the biggest flamenco festival in Moron de la Frontera. It's an essential summer event for aficinados, and is jam-packed with amazing artists of all kinds. Marcos called the lineup this year "the best since the 60s". He took a friend new to the flamenco scene to a first of its kind experience of attending the festival and taking it all in. We recorded this episode last year but never aired it. Then we resumed our recordings and moved on. Manolo Sanlúcar transformed the flamenco guitar into an Andalucian symphony but always retained its roots. He came from a family of bakers but ended up being admired internationally. His fans include big names such as the Spanish Prime Minister Felipe González, the film star Omar Shariff and opera singer Montserrat Caballé. Marcos has more on his life, plus a memory of Manolo playing live in the Genovese gardens in Cádiz and what he consider to be his master work – Tauromagia. The rumba is now part of the repertoire of all flamenco artists. Even though it originated in Cuba, the various Gypsy groups including the Amayas , Ojos de Brujo, and the Gypsy Kings have popularised the form across the world and today’s young guitarist continue to compose new rumbas. And let's not forget a very high point - the release of Entre dos Aguas by Paco de Lucía . Every influential flamenco family is famous for a type of performance - song, dance or playing. In the first of our series on dynasties, we'll talk about the Lebrijanos. Lebrijano is one of the most famous Gypsy flamenco artists and the son of La Perrata – the cousin of Fernanda y Bernarda de Utrera. He also has family ties with La Niña de los Peines, and recorded with all the big guitarists. Marcos also talks about seeing his sister – Inés Bacán live at the Barbican theatre many years ago – along with Moraito. He emerged in the eighties as a major force in the way the flamenco guitar was developing after the revolution of Paco de Lucia. He played some brilliant duets, was admired as a perfectionist, and became a major artist for the label Nuevos Medios. Marcos has great memories of Rafael Riqueni both from Spain and England.
