I've blogged before on the College of Policing's Sergeant and Inspector Promotion and Progression (SIPP) scheme. It is more complex, more time-consuming for all parties, and is being trialled with great flex between forces. And the College really don't like sharing information about it. I've previously pointed out it would be 'doomed to succeed', as these top-down initiatives always seem to get implemented regardless of the evidence for or against. But now we have official confirmation, before the evidence or feedback has even been collated. SIPP WILL be going ahead, replacing the NPPF, and sooner rather than later. But with a twist... it has been also officially declared SIPP is only a temporary solution. There will be an even bigger overhaul of the police promotion process before SIPP even has time to bed in, as directed by the Leadership Commission report. Listen in to me discuss what's currently going on with the SIPP scheme, what the future holds, and how all this relates to your own future leadership and promotion ambitions. The long-awaited Leadership Commission report has been published, albeit a month later than planned. Here's the key highlights and headlines from the Commission led by Lords Blunkett and Herbert, described by College CEO Andy Marsh as the biggest review of police leadership in a decade. The Police Leadership Commission is seeking views from literally anyone interested in policing. Academics, media, organisations, victims, the general public, and officers and staff (current or former). In this episode I run through and critique the survey being used to gather responses. It's completely qualitative, in that you have 700 words for each of the 7 questions asked. That's a massive amount of data for the College to analyse in just a month or two after the closing date of 12 Feb. It even asks for 'sources' to bolster your responses, a very academic practice. Without any ratings or multiple choice, this is a time-consuming form that will likely favour academic responses. Despite these unhelpful designs, I encourage you to feedback with your thoughts.
