Womankind Collective: Spill The Tea Podcast Women’s health, gender bias, extraordinary stories, and the menopause conversation, served with honesty, humour, and heart by authors and lifelong friends Jinty and Lou. Every Sunday we spill the tea on the stuff society shies away from: hormones, health, relationships, equity, midlife pivoting, and finding your confidence again, plus menopause, because it keeps coming up for good reason. No topic’s off-limits and no conversation is too awkward. With expert guests including Menopause specialists, GPs, Gynaecologists, Nutritionists, Sleep Therapists, Advocates, and Comedians, we mix evidence-based facts with real talk, real laughs, and the occasional faux pas. Beyond the podcast, we’re authors of Tackling Gender Bias in the Healthcare System: What Patients Stories Teach Us About Implementing Systemic Change, and our #WheresMyClinic campaign helped bring the NHS Devon Menopause Service to life. We founded Exmouth’s first Menopause Café and hosted BBC Radio Devon’s first-ever menopause café. Find us daily on Instagram as Womankind Collective. New episodes every Sunday, grab a cuppa and join us. It’s time to spill the tea. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Today we're spilling the tea on how AI is affecting women, work, and happiness. Our guest is Giselle Goodwin, a self-help author, former business owner, and the woman behind Can Women Really Have It All? A Happiness Handbook for Working Mothers . But don't let the "self-help" label fool you, Giselle's approach isn't about "finding your inner goddess." It's honest, it's grounded in research, and it's backed by a PhD in women, work and wellbeing that she went back to university to complete after twenty years of running her own businesses. She's spent years asking one deceptively simple question: how can life actually be better for women? In this episode we talk about: • The "having it all" myth, the promise the 1980s sold women, and whether it ever delivered • How flexibility, hybrid working and micro-shifting can quietly become a trap for women at work • The basics of how AI is already affecting women's jobs, and which sectors are most at risk • Why AI's gender bias matters from AI safety and regulation to non-consensual AI-generated images of women and girls • Why Giselle calls the impact of AI on women the next "she-demic," and how worried we should be • The domestic gap nobody talks about and the research showing that when men do more at home, women are less depressed, arguments drop, and divorce risk halves • The three things Giselle would change tomorrow in policy, culture and technology to make work genuinely work for women Plus, we catch up on our week (we've been gadding off to the cinema), and this week's book club pick is a shameless plug, t's our very own book, Tackling Gender Bias in the Healthcare System: What Patients' Stories Teach Us About Implementing Systemic Change , out 21 September 2026 ! Rainbow pregnancies. Matrescence. The silence around loss. Julie explains what a rainbow pregnancy actually is for anyone who hasn't heard the term, and Polly talks us through her more hands-on work, pregnancy massage, hypnobirthing and the benefits for birthing people. We ask why miscarriage and baby loss are still so hard to talk about openly even now, whether that's shifted since Julie and Polly started this work, and what women most often wish someone had told them before pregnancy and birth. We also talk about what it's like supporting women through a period of birth trauma inquiries and maternity investigations, what the disorientation of early motherhood is actually made of hormonal, social, or both and what Julie and Polly would say to anyone listening right now who's feeling that guilt or disconnection. For our listeners supporting adult daughters, friends and family through loss or the fourth trimester, we ask what's most helpful, and what well-meaning people often get wrong when trying to help. We also discuss free or low-cost help and support. We also chat about our weeks, the importance of saying yes and going out, and Jinty talks about hypermobility, how it might affect your vision, and prism lenses in glasses could help. What Patient stories Teach Us About Implementing Systemic Change: https://uk.jkp.com/products/tackling-gender-bias-in-the-healthcare-system Discount Code: THOMSHEER15 We are back for series 17, and our guest today is a dear friend of ours, Elle Mace. Elle is an ILM Level 5 Coach and Mentor, a Master Practitioner in eating disorders, obesity and body dysmorphia, a nutrition and weight management therapist, and a life and positive psychology coach. Elle says she's "always been passionate about health and fitness,” but for years, that passion sat alongside an unhealthy relationship with food that started when she was just ten years old. She's spent the years since learning to free herself from what she calls her "food demons," and falling back in love with her body. That journey is now a book, Food Freedom: How to Find Peace from Food Anxiety and Reclaim Your Body Confidence, an empowering guide for women rebuilding their relationship with food, body image and self-worth. Grounded in positive psychology and Elle's own experience as a qualified Eating Disorders Practitioner, it looks at how diet culture harms all of us, the different faces of disordered eating, and how to trade self-criticism for self-compassion. The book is brilliant, we went along to her book launch, where Elle spoke about her own journey and the power of positive psychology, and we knew you would want to hear this conversation. We chat about how Food Freedom actually came about, and what it was like for Elle writing it, digging back into her own story, including the book's subtitle, How to Find Peace from Food Anxiety and Reclaim Your Body Confidence. Elle takes us into her chapter on Body Dysmorphia and seeing yourself clearly, timed with the first ever Body Dysmorphia Disorder Awareness Day, unpacking what BDD actually is and what it isn't. We talk about diet culture and where "healthy eating" tips into disordered thinking, including whether something like fasting can become disordered when taken too seriously, especially with so many conflicting expert opinions out there. Elle also opens up about swapping self-criticism for self-compassion, including how she came to name her own inner critic, and shares tips for anyone struggling with theirs. We can't ignore what's happening right now with GLP-1s either, so we ask Elle, someone who has spent years untangling this stuff, what she makes of a moment where women are shrinking and even Hollywood stars are starting to look frail rather than "healthy." She tells us the one thing she wishes someone had said to ten-year-old her, and shares the smallest first step she'd want anyone to take today if they recognise themselves in her story. We also chat about our summer, there's a new Weekly Invitation, and stick around for some beautiful inspiration to carry you through the week. ☕ SUBSCRIBE for honest chats on women's health, feminist issues, sisterhood & smashing the patriarchy, one cuppa at a time. 💛 Enjoying the podcast? What Patient stories Teach Us About Implementing Systemic Change: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tackling-Gender-Bias-Healthcare-System/dp/1805018817 Series 16 Finale: Book Club Special with Ruth Newton, author of The Carrier For our series finale, we're doing something a little different: a book club special. We're joined by Ruth Newton, writer, campaign producer, and author of the best-selling debut novel The Carrier, a dystopian story where women absorb other people's pain as a form of labour. The Carrier has already picked up serious recognition: longlisted for BPA's First Novel Award, shortlisted for the Hodderscape x The Science Museum Debut Science Fiction Award, and winner of the Jericho Writers' Friday Night Live competition. In this episode we talk to Ruth about how much of the real world shaped the invented society of Eudaimonia, why she chose to make her protagonist Vivian a true believer rather than a sceptic from the start, and why every carrier in the book is deliberately a woman. We get into the visceral extraction mechanism at the heart of the story, the role men play in the resistance and what it says about allyship, and where The Carrier sits on the spectrum between cautionary tale and reflection of something already happening. We also ask Ruth about Vivian's traumatic awakening, whether her tipping point changed during the writing process, and what she most wants readers, particularly women, to sit with once they've turned the final page. We also discuss our favourite reads of the year so far, and there’s something in there for everyone! Stick around for some beautiful inspiration to carry you through the week. Link to Pre Order: Tackling Gender Bias in The Healthcare System. What Patient stories Teach Us About Implementing Systemic Change: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tackling-Gender-Bias-Healthcare-System/dp/1805018817 This week we are Spilling The Tea with Nicky Denson-Elliott , a professional feminist, community builder, award-winning podcaster, and the woman asking a question that, once you hear it, you can't unhear it. We're talking about the word hysterectomy, a word one in five people don't even realise means the removal of the uterus. A word rooted in "hysteria," a diagnosis used for centuries to dismiss and pathologise women, only struck from medical record books in 1980. Nicky had a hysterectomy herself this year, and it crystallised something she'd already been thinking about as a feminist campaigner. She's now petitioning NHS England to retire the word "hysterectomy" in favour of uterectomy, clearer, more accurate, and free of centuries of baggage. Today we're talking medical misogyny, language, and why the words used for our bodies matter more than we think. We ask her about the petition and the moment that made her think "this word has to change"; how living through her own hysterectomy this year sharpened her view on the language; the real history connecting "hysterectomy" and "hysteria," and whether people actually know it; why a procedure that around one in five UK women will have has never had its language challenged before now; how she's finding getting the petition out there given the algorithm's treatment of women's health content (following our chat with the CensHERship Campaign last week); whether she's faced any opposition or the response has been entirely positive; and what NHS England and clinicians have said so far. We also cover the new terminology for PCOS, now PMOS, and what this name change could hopefully mean for people living with it. What Patient stories Teach Us About Implementing Systemic Change: https://www.waterstones.com/book/tackling-gender-bias-in-the-healthcare-system/louise-hockings-thompson/jinty-sheerin/9781805018810 The history of women's bodies is, in many ways, a history of what men decided women should and shouldn't know. From Aristotle's declaration that the female form was a "defective" version of the male, to Freud's wildly influential and wildly wrong theories about female psychology, medicine has long been shaped by shame and a striking resistance to progress. Today, the censorship has simply migrated from the anatomy textbook to the algorithm: the word vagina can get your content suppressed, women's health ads get pulled without explanation, and gynaecological cancer campaigns get taken down. This week we're joined by Clio Wood, women's health advocate, journalist, author of Get Your Mojo Back: Sex, Pleasure and Intimacy After Birth , and founder of wellbeing retreat company &Breathe together with Anna O'Sullivan , founder of FutureFemHealth, they co-founded CensHERship , an advocacy and research initiative tackling the censorship and bias affecting women's health online. We talk about : • The moment that pushed Clio to act, the compromises creators make (swapping "vagina" for a grapefruit emoji) • Whether that reinforces the very shame they're fighting, • The eye-opening data: 95% of the 150+ organisations they surveyed had experienced censorship in the last year. • We also dig into the double standard between men's and women's health content, • The real-world cost of suppressed information, self-censorship and body shame, • Algorithms, and what's going on here • Where CensHERship is actually seeing change. Plus, Jinty's got a stack of fun fly facts that you can impress your friends with, and stick around till the end for some inspiration to carry you through the week. ☕ SUBSCRIBE for honest chats on women's health, feminist issues, sisterhood & smashing the patriarchy, one cuppa at a time. 💛 Enjoying the podcast? What Patient stories Teach Us About Implementing Systemic Change: https://www.waterstones.com/book/tackling-gender-bias-in-the-healthcare-system/louise-hockings-thompson/jinty-sheerin/9781805018810 She was 16 years old, newly separated from her home country, when she received a diagnosis that would reshape everything she thought she knew about herself, her body, and her place in the world. Natalia Shvarts was born with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser Syndrome, MRKH , a rare condition affecting over 10,000 women in the UK, where the vagina and uterus are underdeveloped or absent. It would take years, and a memoir, to find her way home to herself. In this episode, we sit down with Natalia, solicitor, speaker, MRKH advocate, and author of I Don't Matter: In Search of Home , for an honest, unflinching conversation about what it means to be told, as a teenager, that your body is different, and to spend years rebuilding your identity from that moment on. We explore the diagnosis itself, what Natalia was told at sixteen and how she made sense of it; what MRKH actually is and why it remains so widely undiagnosed; the profound question she found herself asking in those early years: "If real women bleed, what even was I?" ; navigating vaginal dilation as a teenager, largely alone and without adequate support; where gender bias shows up in MRKH care and how the medical system fails women with the condition; the loneliness, secrecy and shame that surrounded her diagnosis and her family's reaction to it; entering the UK's first womb transplant trial and the moment she made the decision to withdraw; the link between her diagnosis, people pleasing, and finding herself in a relationship involving coercive control; her mental health reaching a crisis point and why she speaks about it publicly; and what reclaiming her identity and reaching acceptance has actually looked like in practice. This episode also features our women's rights quiz and it makes for genuinely shocking listening. And this week we have something quite special: a Jinty Joke to make you smile through the week. Natalia's memoir is raw, necessary, and deeply human. This is the kind of conversation that reminds you why we spill the tea. ☕ SUBSCRIBE for honest chats on women's health, feminist issues, sisterhood & smashing the patriarchy, one cuppa at a time. 💛 Enjoying the podcast? What Patient stories Teach Us About Implementing Systemic Change: https://www.waterstones.com/book/tackling-gender-bias-in-the-healthcare-system/louise-hockings-thompson/jinty-sheerin/9781805018810 In this episode, we are joined by Fay Peace, a woman whose experience of navigating the healthcare system is both deeply personal and heartbreakingly familiar. After visiting her GP in 2019 with symptoms she knew felt wrong, Fay spent nearly two years being dismissed, told it was probably the perimenopause, or perhaps a UTI before finally being diagnosed with stage 3 womb cancer in 2021. Womb cancer, also known as uterine cancer, is the fourth most common cancer in women in the UK, with around 9,800 new cases diagnosed every year. Incidence rates have risen by nearly 60% since the early 1990s. And yet it remains one of the least talked-about gynaecological cancers which is exactly why conversations like this one matter. In this conversation, Fay takes us back to the very beginning: what her early symptoms were like, why they were so easy to explain away, and at what point she began to sense something serious was being missed. She talks honestly about what it felt like to have her instincts dismissed, including the moment her surgeon told her it was stage 1 and "nothing to worry about" only for that to change. She shares what it was really like to go through chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and brachytherapy, and what kept her going. We list the main symptoms to look our for, the need for early detection diagnostics and the importance of primary care listening to a patients real concerns and symptoms. Fay didn't stay silent. She channelled her experience into action, launching her campaign #CheckYouOut she’s on a mission to get the symptoms of all five gynaecological cancers (cervical, womb, ovarian, vaginal, and vulval) onto everyday product packaging. She's already secured a significant win, convincing Bodyform to redirect their QR code to The Eve Appeal and she's just getting started. What Patient stories Teach Us About Implementing Systemic Change: https://www.waterstones.com/book/tackling-gender-bias-in-the-healthcare-system/louise-hockings-thompson/jinty-sheerin/9781805018810 This week on Spill The Tea, Lou and Jinty are joined by Sarah West, a nurse, ADHD coach, and passionate advocate for women who've spent years being everything except correctly diagnosed. Sarah first joined us in Series 12, Episode 3 to share her own story. Now she's back as part of our Gender Bias in Healthcare series, and this conversation goes deeper. Together we explore how ADHD research was almost entirely built around hyperactive boys and the lasting legacy for generations of women and girls who simply didn't fit that picture. We discuss why girls tend to internalise where boys externalise, and whether that's still playing out in referral pathways today. We examine why so many women receive anxiety, depression, or even bipolar diagnoses before anyone considers ADHD and what it does to a woman to have her neurology repeatedly mistaken for a mood disorder. Sarah also tackles the topic of perimenopause and how it can dramatically unmask ADHD symptoms, the emerging research linking ADHD and autism with hypermobility, the "over-diagnosis" backlash and whether that criticism is actually a gender bias story in disguise, plus what still needs to change, and what good post-diagnosis support should look like. We also share what we’ve been up to this week, and stick around for some beautiful inspiration to carry you through the week. ☕ Subscribe for honest chats on women's health, feminist issues, sisterhood & smashing the patriarchy one cuppa at a time. 💛 Enjoying the podcast? What Patient stories Teach Us About Implementing Systemic Change: https://www.waterstones.com/book/tackling-gender-bias-in-the-healthcare-system/louise-hockings-thompson/jinty-sheerin/9781805018810 Description: Internalised Misogyny in Healthcare Have you ever been told you're too much? Too emotional, too sensitive or not sick enough, not convincing enough, or just not the right kind of patient? And have you ever walked out of an appointment with a female doctor feeling like that was somehow worse? You're not imagining it. This week, we're talking about why. We're joined by Sophie Lee, founder and CEO of Electric Peach and author of Beyond Palatable , a manifesto for women who are done shrinking. Together we unpack internalised misogyny: what it is, how it shows up in the consulting room, among our friends, and sometimes in ourselves. We explore why women are conditioned to police each other's health experiences, why dismissal from female clinicians can feel particularly shocking, and how we can start to check our own internalised biases. Sophie also shares her powerful perspective on self-advocacy in medical spaces, the exhausting cost of making ourselves palatable, and as a newly expectant mother how navigating maternity care has brought all of this into sharp focus. If you've ever contorted yourself to be believed, this episode is for you. 💛 Stick around for some beautiful inspiration to carry you through the week. ☕ SUBSCRIBE for honest chats on women's health, feminist issues, sisterhood & smashing the patriarchy, one cuppa at a time. She went to her GP with real symptoms and was asked if it was all in her head. It wasn't. Dismissed by her consultant, Jen was eventually diagnosed with Medullary Thyroid Cancer, a rare cancer and her journey since has transformed her into a powerful advocate for women's health. In this honest, moving conversation, we explore: • The moment Jen was made to feel her symptoms weren't real and how she responded • What Medullary Thyroid Cancer is, • What treatment looked like, and what she wishes she'd known sooner • The often-overlooked connection between cancer treatment and menopause • Her work training workplaces in menopause awareness and volunteering with a menopause and cancer charity Jen is raw, real, and utterly compelling and she has a message for every woman whose pain has ever been dismissed. This week, Jinty and Lou sit down with Rosie Taylor , award-winning investigative journalist, broadcaster, media consultant, and host of the Mother Bodies podcast. Rosie has spent a decade reporting on women's health and family life for some of the UK's biggest publications. But what sets her apart is this: she hasn't just reported on the crisis in maternity care, she's lived it. Her own experience of birth trauma sent her on a mission to understand what is going wrong in our maternity system, and she has been reporting and campaigning on it ever since. In this powerful and eye-opening conversation, we explore: → How Rosie went from personal anger to understanding this as a systemic failure. → Why postnatal care is described as the "Cinderella" of midwifery and why just £250 is allocated per woman postnatally vs £2,800 for antenatal care. → The shocking dismissal of women in crisis including one who was told "stop making a fuss, everyone has babies" while suffering massive internal bleeding. → The paradox of understaffed maternity wards and newly qualified midwives unable to find jobs. → How racially minoritised women, disabled women, and those facing economic hardship are being failed most severely. → Whether the 12 recommendations from the 2024 maternity inquiry are being acted upon and why nearly two thirds of maternal deaths happen postnatally. → How patriarchal medical systems have systematically stripped power from midwives and mothers. → What excellent maternity care actually looks like, and where we go from here We also chat about our week, including a new film that's just dropped and exactly how much alcohol is being drunk in parliament. Hear us rant! We end with something beautiful to carry you through the week. 🌸 ☕ SUBSCRIBE for honest chats on women's health, feminist issues, sisterhood & smashing the patriarchy, one cuppa at a time. 💛 Enjoying the podcast? What Patient stories Teach Us About Implementing Systemic Change: https://www.waterstones.com/book/tackling-gender-bias-in-the-healthcare-system/louise-hockings-thompson/jinty-sheerin/9781805018810 Our guest today is Neelam Heera-Shergill, founder and CEO of Cysters, a community-led charity with national reach working at the intersection of menstrual health, maternal care and mental well-being. When we talk about gender bias in healthcare, we're really talking about a system that has historically been designed for men. But what happens when you exist outside that narrow template in more ways than one? Neelam knows that story intimately, and has built something extraordinary in response to it. Rooted in grassroots activism and collective liberation, Cysters exists to challenge the stigma, systemic barriers and cultural silence that prevents so many people particularly those from ethnically diverse communities from getting the care they deserve. Neelam's work spans advocacy, creative storytelling, policy influence and community building, all driven by a simple but radical belief: that menstrual and maternal care should never be a privilege. In this conversation we explore: · How Cysters began with one voice and one lived experience and the moment Neelam knew she had to turn it into something bigger. · Why the framing of ethnically diverse communities as "hard to reach" says far more about the system than the community and what Cysters' evidence actually shows. · The real problem at the heart of healthcare inequity: "a lack of listening, referring, believing." · Through our research for our book, we found that women from deprived areas and marginalised communities are doubly disadvantaged when it comes to healthcare and whether Neelam's findings reflect the same. · The specific conditions endometriosis, PMOS, miscarriage, menopause where the intersection of gender and ethnicity creates particularly stark gaps in care. · How Cysters holds space for communities where menstruation carries cultural silence or shame, while still challenging it. · The ways Cysters has influenced real research and policy, and how a community of voices is making a tangible difference. · What a genuinely equitable reproductive healthcare system would look like and the two or three things that would need to change first. · Why "radical love and care" sits at the centre of Cysters' work, and why that language matters in a world of policy documents and research reports. We also catch up on our adventurous week hiking with Ramble Worldwide and Ageism is Never In Style in the Lake District with a wonderful group of like-minded women and we chat about why pre-orders for books truly matter (did you know we've got a book coming out in September?) This week on Spill The Tea , we're having the conversation the NHS seems reluctant to. We sit down with Jocelyn, who at 36 went into premature menopause, and years later underwent a hysteroscopy a procedure she was wholly unprepared for. What followed was agonising pain, zero adequate warning, and a long road to discovering she was far from alone. Jocelyn found her way to Hysteroscopy Action , a UK campaign fighting for patients' rights to proper pain relief and informed consent and she's here to help make sure you're better informed than she was. Together we unpack what a hysteroscopy is, why so many women are still suffering needlessly, and the question we simply won't let go of: if this were a procedure routinely performed on men, would "take a paracetamol" ever be considered adequate? We also catch up on our week and chat about our new BFF Jane Green and her hotly anticipated memoir Rewilding , out in June one to pre-order immediately. Plus, we close with some beautiful inspiration to carry you through the week. 🌿 Whether you've had a hysteroscopy, have one coming up, or simply want to understand why the gender pain gap is still very much alive this episode is for you. ☕ SUBSCRIBE for honest chats on women’s health, feminist issues, sisterhood & smashing the patriarchy, one cuppa at a time. 💛 Enjoying the podcast? BBC South West journalist Emily Wood first joined us, a few moons ago, to talk perimenopause. Today, she returns in an entirely different capacity, to share one of the most personal and compelling investigations we've ever heard. Emily has created True Crime Tuesday currently airing on BBC Radio Devon Daytimes and it’s a deeply personal reinvestigation into the murder of her great aunt, Eva Porter, killed in Clapham in 1935. What began as her mum exploring the family tree became something far bigger: a cold case reinvestigation, a journey through the London Archives, 83 pages of a coroner's report, and an unexpected thread connecting the case to Devon's most famous daughter, Agatha Christie. But at its heart, this is about something we care deeply about: women's history. The real kind. Eva was a young woman who left home at 17 with ambitions, who became a single mother doing whatever she had to do to survive, and who was ultimately reduced to a headline about how she died. Emily has spent many hours making sure that is not where her story ends. Because how many Eva’s are there? How many women's lives were shaped or crushed by the world they were born into, and then quietly forgotten? In this episode we ask Emily: when did curiosity become investigation? What did 83 pages of a coroner's report reveal? What was life really like for women in 1930s London? What is the Agatha Christie connection? And what has it meant to give Eva her name back? Stick around for some beautiful inspiration to carry you through the week. 💛 True Crime Tuesday is currently airing on BBC Radio Devon Daytimes. Lee works with health professionals through NHS Practitioner Health, speaks at national events, offers one-to-one therapy for adults, and hosts her own podcast The Choice Space. In this episode we explore why so many women experience imposter syndrome and how it often overlaps with people pleasing and perfectionism. We also talk about: • Whether imposter syndrome is more common in women • Why people pleasing can be damaging but can also have a positive spin if dealt with correctly • How these traits show up for late diagnosed autistic and neurodivergent women • Practical CBT tools for those moments when the “I’m a fraud” thought appears • What Dr Lee wishes every woman truly understood about self-worth We also chat about going to the hygienist, how are your gums? And as always, stay until the end for some beautiful inspiration to carry you through the week. If you’ve ever doubted yourself, felt like you had to prove your worth, or wondered why success can still feel uncomfortable, this conversation will resonate deeply. This week on Spill The Tea with WKC, we’re joined by chemotherapy nurse Gemma Reeves, who has witnessed first-hand the heart-breaking rise of breast cancer in younger women. Gemma recently launched a petition calling for routine mammograms in the UK to begin at age 40 instead of 50 a campaign focused on earlier detection and saving lives. In a major step forward, the petition has now passed 100,000 signatures, meaning it must be considered for parliamentary debate. Currently, the NHS Breast Screening Programme invites women aged 50 to 70 for a mammogram every three years. Those guidelines are based on evidence reviewed by the UK National Screening Committee, which assesses when screening provides more benefit than harm. But with diagnoses increasingly affecting younger women, Gemma and many others are asking whether the current system is still fit for purpose. Breast cancer isn’t just statistics it’s our friends and family. Jinty lost her best friend to breast cancer at 43 after both of us found lumps at the same time. Jinty’s was benign. Hers wasn’t. That’s why conversations like this matter. In this episode we discuss: • What change Gemma is asking the government to make • What she’s seeing on the frontline of cancer care • Why the myth that younger women don’t get breast cancer is so dangerous • The symptoms women at any age should never ignore • How she carries the emotional weight of caring for patients while campaigning nationally Alongside this powerful conversation, we also take a lighter wander through the week, including a nostalgic look back at the public service adverts Gen X grew up watching, some wonderful collective nouns for groups of animals, and a delightful contribution from our dear friend Tom Read Wilson, who shares a collective noun for a group of menopausal women. Stay with us to the end for a little inspiration to carry you through the week. This week on WKC Spill The Tea, we’re joined by psychotherapist, feminist thinker and author Jennifer Cox to discuss Anger and her ground-breaking book, Women Are Angry , named The Times Self-Help Book of the Year 2024. For generations, women have been conditioned to stay quiet, be agreeable and not make a fuss. But suppressed anger doesn’t disappear it manifests as burnout, anxiety, depression and physical symptoms. Jennifer draws on decades of clinical experience to explore how rage is often a rational response to inequality, injustice and the emotional labour placed on women. In this episode, we explore: • The moment Jennifer knew this book had to be written • The patterns she repeatedly saw in the therapy room • Why rage rooms are booming and why 90% of customers are women • How to tell the difference between depression, burnout and anger • The “small” daily frustrations that accumulate into something much bigger • How suppressed anger shows up in women’s bodies and mental health We also discuss what’s making us personally angry right now including the corruption of water companies in England after watching Channel 4’s Dirty Business , and how this impacts us here in the South West. Stick around for our 'Thought for the Week, beautifully inspired by our guest, Jen, to carry you through the week, plus all the usual warmth, honesty and shenanigans you’ve come to expect from WKC. If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re exhausted… or just done this episode is for you. This week on Spill The Tea, we’re joined by Jacynth Bassett , founder of Ageism Is Never In Style , a global platform working to change how age is understood, represented and valued. Jacynth approaches age through a feminist, intergenerational lens, challenging how women are judged, marketed to, and treated as they get older — and exploring what becomes possible when we shift the narrative. In this episode, we explore: • What “ageism” actually means and where it shows up in everyday life • Why ageing feels tougher for women, particularly around appearance and credibility • The emotional, economic and health costs of ageism • Where real change is happening from campaigns to consulting to community work • Why 78% of over-50s feel under- or misrepresented in advertising • Whether youth-focused marketing profits from making older women feel like they need fixing • The shift from “anti-ageing” to “pro-ageing” and how language shapes identity • Why intergenerational thinking transforms how we see later life We catch up after our break and there’s plenty of shenanigans to discuss, and stick around for some beautiful inspiration to carry you through the week. For anyone listening, this conversation is an invitation to feel more unapologetic, more visible, and more powerful as you age. You can find Jacynth and Ageism Is Never In Style® via these links.
