It's two weeks of back to back Utcasts as we mix things up to go goofy-mode on your asses. We're talking about the Ocarina of Time Remake, Torneko's Mystery Dungeon, Chibi Robo, Mega Man, and more. Later, CurtDogg stops by to reminisce about old times with Destructoid live events plus tell us a bit about his own live events and also talk about his new kickstarter for rollercoaster accessibility review videos (which you can support here: http://kickstarter.curt.dog/ ) (and also the CurtDogg section is available as a video on our YouTube channel with a lot of relevant visual b-roll: https://youtu.be/o2cfat6-YO4 ). Rounding things out, we air some dirty Maximum Utmost laundry as Jonathan and Zoey try to get to the heart of how and why you should (or shouldn't?) support franchises. Whoever wins, we lose. This episode, we're carrying forward things that you're thinking about, which is to say we're talking about a bunch of old weird stuff. Remember when the rights to Dick Tracy were the hottest topic of the day? How about when Final Fantasy became a gacha phone game but then removed all of that stuff? We also reminisce about when video games were allowed to be weird with Seth Sturgill (video of that chat here: https://youtu.be/eYhBTVfwQ9I )...or maybe they still can be weird? Later, Zoey treats us to a deep delve into the lore of the Elder Scrolls as a way to illustrate that games have sanded off all their rough edges in favor of appealing to more people...to their detriment. 0:00:00 - Now That's What I Call Nips 0:07:31 - The Dick Tracy Rights Battle Saga 0:12:30 - Final Fantasy Resonance by Way of Earthbound 0:24:46 - The Queen of Mean 0:28:08 - Are Games Allowed to be Weird Any More? w/ Seth Sturgill 1:05:31 - Have Games Been Dumbed Down for Some Bonehead Mass Audience? It's the 2nd anniversary of Currently Playing and this month, Daniel talks to Carson Anderson, a software engineer who gives talks about the technical aspects of coding on YouTube. Today he's telling us about his "monogame" which is Monster Train 2, a roguelike deck-builder in the vein of Slay the Spire. We get into the weeds about what makes Monster Train 2 unique and how it distinguishes itself from the first game in the series. If you're anything like Carson, you might find yourself spending hundreds of hours in there, so come on ride the train! 0:00:00 - Welcome to the Show, Carson! 0:04:07 - What Are You Playing? On this most Maximum of Utted-casts, Jonathan takes us on a grand tour of random pop culture before opening the discussion to a case of covering up potential bigotry in the video game world. Is the purple Pikmin racist or beloved? Later, our friend Lily Valeen stops by to talk about how her identity informs her work on her games Boss Game, Bright Red Song of Love, and Touhou: Lonely Lovely Bonfire, plus a whole lot mor (you can view the entire interview as a video here: https://youtu.be/sqsas6xxQQA ). Spider-Man, E. Honda, Yngwie Malmsteen, and more make guest appearances, and we get some surprise last minute thoughts on games like Door Door, Mouthwashing, and Wiping. 0:00:00 - Jonathan's Pop Culture Quiz 0:11:58 - The Torment Zone 0:14:20 - Is It Bigotry or Not? 0:20:58 - The Color Purple Pikmin 0:35:58 - Making Games You Love That Feel Just Right with Lily Valeen 1:12:52 - Vacuum Cleaner Vore 1:15:04 - Perfect Peter Parker 1:16:40 - The Great Edmond Honda Debate 1:20:33 - Wrap Up/Plugs/Thanks Patrons!/Door Door/Mouthwashing/Wiping 1:37:05 - I Love Your Ass 1:38:45 - Basically Clayface Learn more about the games, artwork, and music made by Lily Valeen on her website: https://itsmelilyv.com/ Follow Lily on Bluesky Subscribe to the print magazine Nintendo Force: https://www.nintendoforcemagazine.com/ Read the written website of this show: https://maxutmost.com/ Follow Jonathan on Bluesky Follow Zoey on Bluesky Follow the podcast on Bluesky Follow Daniel on Bluesky Support Zoey’s Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/adzuken Support the Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/ttwav
Differences in people are what make us all unique. Race, gender, ability, and more get explored on this episode where Jonathan (or is it Jon?) and Ryan talk about a recently acquired Pokemon book, Splatoon Raiders, Poppy Playtime, My Friendly Neighborhood, Rust, To a T, and more. Later, the boys give their opinions on Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Is this the worst episode of this show? Who's to say. How many ways can you die in a mechanic simulator? What year did the Wii and PS3 actually come out? And what's the best way to deal with fascism? These questions and many more might be answered on this jam packed episode of the Maximum Utcast! Later, Jonathan is joined by Sean Velasco, Alec Faulkner, and Nick Wozniak of Yacht Club Games to talk about what might be in store for their company now that Mina the Hollower has released (you can watch the video for that here: https://youtu.be/IalSAVwXsn0 ). And then somehow we conclude our videogames show with ~20 mins of comic book chat, mostly centered around Spider-Man and his newest movie (extremely minimal spoilers for the Spider-Man: Brand New Day film, but maximum spoilers for like 30 or 40 years of Spider-Man comics). 0:00:00 - The Many Ways to Die of Intense Relaxation in My Summer Car 0:09:13 - 2017, the Year of the Wii and PS3 0:12:55 - For the Record, We're Anti-Master-D 0:25:22 - Devolver's Going Indie (Again) 0:33:09 - What's Next for Yacht Club Games After Mina the Hollower? 0:54:57 - Germs On the Mind 1:03:50 - Game Devs Really Took Chances with the PS1 1:06:43 - Spider-Man 4eva 1:10:27 - Spider-Man Free Play Chat 1:16:15 - I Feel So Much for Henchmen 1:19:48 - The Tick was Great 1:25:11 - Wrap Up/Plugs/Thanks Patrons! John-Charles Holmes of Nintendo Force and The Yetee stops by to talk about the history of the Rhythm Heaven series and how the new game, Rhythm Heaven Groove fits in (you can watch that as a video here: https://youtu.be/vkQV5hTBcv0 ). I headed to a sleepy coastal town on Lake Michigan to hang out with some of the crew from the Fix Your Heart or Die podcast and along the way we figured we might as well get some content on the books. For the first time ever, 2 guests in-studio gathered together to talk Mina the Hollower and StarFox '26 (along with some guesses regarding the future release of Ocarina of Time '26). The mostly free form chat is a sort of "warts and all" podcast with a few disruptions from Waldo the cat, and plenty of technical glitches you only get from recording locally, but it was cool to get face to face on the topic of video games. After this chat, I got the chance to play StarFox '26 and my thoughts are "this sure is StarFox 64 with a coat of paint!" But for more in depth analysis, you'll have to listen to this episode. 0:00:00 - Welcome Back to the Show, Shy Fox and Marcy 0:05:40 - What Are You Playing? Take a walk on the wild side with the Maximum Utcast as we tour through the menagerie of exotic beasts. We talk mildly about GTA6 and wildly about Red Dead Redemption 2's horse ball physics before opening the floor to a great debate about the N64 vs. the PS1. Later, the state of the Atari Lynx is discussed and we go deep on Mega Man. Sarah Carapace visits the show to discuss some of the identity crisis facing the Double Dragon series, while focusing on the game Double Dragon Advance (read more about that at the link below). On this episode which was recorded on Father's Day, Jonathan and Ryan switch places (sorta). Ryan is convinced he needs to spoil the Amazing Digital Circus and Jonathan is not convinced the things Ryan says are spoilers, but if you haven't seen the show yet, you may want to watch it before hearing what Ryan has to say. Crab Meat is a Tasty Treat What is the most iconic sound of summer? And what sort of Crab Meat do you want to eat? Talking to My Boy About Videogames (and Sometimes Movies) is back with a review of the hottest new kids movie of the summer, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu. Following that, Jonathan gets us back on track with a bit of chat about the newest game in the Yoshi series, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book that takes players back to Yoshi's Island. This episode has minor spoilers for the Mandalorian and Grogu as well as hint-style spoilers for Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. And by the end of the show, will we ever learn what is and is not cute? 0:00:00 - Scanning Your Brain 0:03:10 - The Rise of Skywalker is the Wii U of Star Wars Movies 0:05:00 - The Mandalorian and Grogu Review 0:09:42 - Spoilers for the Mandalorian and Grogu 0:12:25 - Spoilers "End" Here 0:14:53 - Yoshi is a Dinosaur Frog 0:17:14 - Ryan's Podcast Takeover 0:20:14 - How Much Do You Like Yoshi and the Mysterious Book? 0:26:31 - Ribbit 0:29:14 - Nintendo Didn't Have Much Faith in Panel De Pon 0:31:04 - The Continuing Legacy of "Talking to My Boy..." 0:31:40 - The Cute Manipulation 0:35:12 - Podcast Recap/Analysis of the Hutts 0:39:08 - Anyway, Bye Now! What is real? Are the memories you make attending a summer camp real or are they implanted in your mind by a Hollywood movie? Did you write the news or did the news write you? Have you ever been in a fight, only to find out that you were alone in your Batcave? Is a light gun a joystick, or was it the Mandela Effect all along? These questions and more will be answered as answers will be questioned on this week's episode of the Maximum Utcast. James Interactive stops by to talk with Jonathan about their upcoming game Screaming Savage Blood Death (watch the video!) and elsewhere, we pontificate on the cosmic nature of media. 0:00:00 - Batman's Private Browser 0:11:41 - Feedback on Writing the News 0:20:35 - Correction: Operation Wolf is a Light Gun Game 0:25:42 - You Ever Been in a Fight? 0:26:58 - A Good Editor Can Save You From Your Worst Impulses 0:32:22 - Screaming Savage Blood Death and the Real New Jersey with James Interactive 1:11:50 - Horror Game Lore is So Popular 1:13:45 - Zoey's Local Lore 1:18:24 - Mailbag: Have You Seen "True Stories?" 1:28:20 - Wrap Up/Plugs/Thanks Patrons! 1:50:05 - Batman James Interactive on Bluesky Zoey on Bluesky Jonathan on Bluesky The podcast’s Bluesky Daniel on Bluesky Written articles at: https://maxutmost.com/ Support Zoey’s Ko-Fi
Forum fixture Xyliac joins Daniel to talk about video games and Texas and where the two intersect. From forming community podcasts to starting online disinformation campaigns, Xzyliac has been woven into the fabric of the internet and has her pulse on the beating heart of video game news for some time now. We get into Pragmata, but only after really getting to know her passion for space and exploration games like Starfield and No Man's Sky. There's also a divergence to Spider-Man 2, which we kind of spoil a bit from the ending of, so watch out for that if you haven't played Spider-Man 2 yet. And then we wrap with a bit of X-Men chat.
