He was a member of the first Australian side to defeat all four home nations achieving the Grand Slam - against England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. He was a Rugby World Cup winner in 1991, equal leading try-scorer with six, and was named “Player of the Tournament". In addition, he won three Bledisloe Cups in 1986, 1992 & 1994 and won the Top 12 in Italy on five occasions.

He played professional rugby union for over a decade winning 42 Springboks Caps, scoring 55 points (11 tries), and captaining the national team in 12 Tests Matches. He enjoyed a quite remarkable and incredibly decorated career, the Rugby World Cup winner also won several Currie Cup titles as well as the Tri-Nations. His domestic rugby career included Western Province before turning to Super Rugby franchises the Sharks, Stormers, and Cats.

He won 15 Wales caps and toured Australia & New Zealand with the 1992 Great Britain Rugby League Lions. In 1991 he won the Regal Trophy with Warrington where he played 123 games, scoring 35 tries. He then played for Workington Town, before returning to Rugby Union where he joined Sale and had spells with Cardiff, London Irish, Pontypool, Ebbw Vale & Maesteg.

In 1972 representing GB, he won the Rugby League World Cup.
