Although I spoke a lot about legacy years ago (even wrote a book on it 25 years ago called Who Will Cry When You Die? ), I no longer think it’s a thing worth pursuing. Because we’ll be dead. So who cares what people say? Better to be great and brave and excellent and loving while you’re alive. That’s the irony: care not about your legacy and live gorgeously now and you’ll automatically create a grand legacy. I'm truly super excited over the upcoming release of my new book The Robot and the Gardener: Being Fully Human in an Artificial Age (Penguin Random House). It's a parable and it's different (by far!) from any book I've ever written. You can join the list here if you'd like to be among the first to receive any updates. To be human is to crave a cause. We all need a powerful purpose to get us out of bed every morning and draw out the finest within us. I viscerally believe that one of the dominant reasons so many amongst us are addicted to distraction and living amid apathy is they haven’t found something larger than their own lives to stand for. Once you find your compelling cause, begin to share it with your community. Talk it up. Blog it out. This will give your followers hope + energy + drive. Your job is to bring meaning to people in need. I'm truly super excited over the upcoming release of my new book The Robot and the Gardener: Being Fully Human in an Artificial Age (Penguin Random House). It's a parable and it's different (by far!) from any book I've ever written. I'll be sharing the cover with you today, on September 15. To not die when you get knocked down is to play with the gods. And soar with the angels. Sometimes—in the hardest and darkest of times—what helps you survive and then thrive and then fly is putting one foot after another foot, after another foot. Small baby steps that eventually get us running again. The key is not to give up. Never ever never ever ever ever ever never ever! (Thanks Winston). Not to become an injustice collector. Not to give up on your heroic ideals and your gorgeous dreams for a richer, better, happier and more helpful life. Become UnKillAble. Please. Sure you can meditate and pray and heal and go silent. All such practices work. To help you step into who and all you’re meant to be, as you realize your highest destiny. But, if you and I were having coffee at a simple yet soulful cafe in some special and perhaps even mystical far-off land (Bhutan is on my list) and after a sip or two, you asked me “Robin, what’s the one spiritual skill that lifts every other spiritual skill?” I’d reply, after a sip or two, “learning to get really really really good at letting go.” Sure, it sounds so simple. To… …let go and let God. …to do your best and then have the bravery, wisdom and faith to let life do the rest. …to exercise action and then release longing and wishing and trust the ancient and transformational prayer “thy will be done.” Seems easy. Hard to apply, in reality. Because we all want what we want. It’s such a challenge to let go, and trust that after we’ve done our human part (invested the sweat equity, risen when fallen and stood for excellence) whatever comes is for our absolute best. Yet, why would we not want it? Because it’s for our best, if you get my drift. Most (not all!) of the billionaires, celebrity CEOs and famous entrepreneurs that have come to me for mentoring over the past 3 decades have one thing in common: they are ultra-rich yet happiness poor. It’s just the reality. They are obsessed with success, needy for more and consumed with making their disruptive visions come to life. Nothing else matters for these humans. I help them grow even bigger, better, more inventive companies while showing them proven systems and protocols to slow down, get super healthy, fill their days with more love and handcraft beautiful personal lives. One of the ways I mentor them in achieving this delicate balance include teaching them, in heavyweight detail and with advanced advice, The 8 Forms of Wealth model so that they viscerally understand that money is only one form of wealth. This, then, causes them to pursue the other forms of abundance (wellness, family, service to others for example) leading to far deeper feelings of fulfillment. And significant increases in their sense of freedom. Take care of the relationship and the money takes care of itself. Too many in business are focused on grabbing cash versus serving people. Yet when your dominant focus is on building relationships with your team, suppliers and customers (who put food on your family table), economic rewards are the byproduct. Get great at building a rich social network—and being of use to as many human beings as possible—and wealth, satisfaction and deep meaning will follow. One of the primary assets of genius is time mastery. [Time management is so old-school; the true sport is to master it]. Watch someone stuck in a victim mentality and a life of scarcity and you’ll see they waste their time. On the other side are the rare-air few who get amazing projects done, dominate their domains via their skill and lead lives of boundless joy and fulfillment [because service is the DNA of happiness]. The Top 5% of producers, guard their time fiercely. They are up early, have clear daily plans, run elite performance routines and alternate bursts of extreme productivity with periods of deep rest so they sustain their A-Game over a lifetime. Yes, it’s true: you’re being watched. And so am I. Each day, in all we do -- at home and at work and on the street -- people are watching how we speak and the way we behave and the quality of our integrity. The best leaders influence their followers by understanding that every move they make sends a signal to their team on what behavior sets the standard. In my leadership keynotes for fast-growing companies I share the term “LBE”: Lead By Example and note that it’s the opposite of CBE: Complaint, Blame and Excuse (which gets a leader nowhere). So yes, people do watch what we do, even if we fall into the trap of thinking that they don’t. And our reputation is based on the richness of that doing. Having mentored many of the world's most successful human beings over many years, I can share with you that they have a lot of common traits. For example: —they are wildly curious —they are less scared of saying yes —they understand that failure is a gift —they know that relationships are key —they agree that disruptors win —they focus less on cost and more on value —they relentlessly invest in their growth My latest book “ The Wealth Money Can’t Buy” is full of fresh ideas and original tools that I’m absolutely certain will cause quantum leaps in your positivity, productivity, wellness, and happiness. We all have hard seasons. Stages where the ground on which we stand seems to crumble, nothing seems to be in our favor and the winter seems endless. To know pain, to endure suffering and to feel as though the trial will never end is to be fully human. And to become most intimate with life itself. “A bad day for the ego is a great day for the soul”, though. From what I can tell—and who truly knows the way the world works—that which appears to unmake us is the very season that rebuilds us. Our pain, in truth, becomes a purifier. Difficulty softens us, unmasks us and opens us—allowing the gifts of wisdom, humility and patience to become our new way of being. I find myself thinking about the people who show us what it truly means to serve humanity. And when I think of that kind of leadership, Nelson Mandela tops my list. His grace. His courage. His forgiveness. His kindness. No matter how busy he was as president of South Africa, he always had time to shake the hand of a cleaner, offer a word of encouragement to a server, or share a laugh with a child. The true measure of a person is how they treat those who can do nothing for them. As I think about it, though, I believe the real secret of his magic was that he was an absolute master of staying focused on his mission. Through times of ease and nights of darkness, he relentlessly stayed true to his ideal of a free and democratic South Africa. A place where all could flourish, regardless of their skin color or ethnic origin. To refuse to surrender to apathy by exposing your artistic instincts to the light of day is to really live. We all were ever so creative as kids. Sadly, too many good souls have lost that connection as we have matured into adulthood. To dream and imagine and envision your highest possibilities is to breathe aliveness into your days. In a world that often pressures us to conform, the true essence of greatness lies in embracing our authentic selves. Each of us is a unique tapestry woven from experiences, dreams, and passions. To live authentically is to honor this tapestry, to present ourselves to the world without fear or reservation. It requires bravery—a courage that inspires us to break free from societal expectations and to express who we truly are. Being authentic means daring to voice your thoughts and beliefs, even when they challenge the status quo. It’s about recognizing that your perspective is valid and valuable. When you speak your truth (even if your voice shakes), you not only empower yourself but also inspire others to do the same. Each time you choose honesty over approval from others, you create a cascading effect of authenticity, encouraging those around you to step into their own light. Ordinary companies chase quarterly earnings. Legendary companies play an astonishingly long game. Amazon’s Jeff Bezos insisted that decisions must make sense 5–7 years out—not just next quarter. In a Bain & Company survey, 81% of top-performing firms said they tie major initiatives to long-term value creation, not just near-term KPIs. These companies innovate patiently, hire strategically (you can’t have an A-grade business with C-level players right?), and invest like they’ll own the future. Not only that, the best firms get that “when you take care of the relationship the money takes care of itself.” So they are obsessively relational versus merely transactional. Great leaders move from being “busy being busy” to being monomaniacally focused on the few things that matter most. In a distracted world, they are disciplined executors. They choose depth over speed, completion over motion, and impact over appearance. They make the hard decisions to prioritize what truly moves the mission forward—and they inspire others to do the same. The famous CEOs I mentor and the celebrated billionaires I advise and the sports heroes I guide and the entertainment royalty I train are ALL “strategic worriers.” Yes. Yes. Yes. “Strategic Worriers.” This means that, of course, they meditate and journal and pray and exercise and nature walk and use their mantras to upgrade their Zen. Inner peace is a priceless treasure. And yet, they never lose their fire. They REFUSE to get stale. They never mail it in. They always bring it on. And this philosophical posture REQUIRES that they worry. Strategically. Imagine that each day of your life you had spectators. Yes, an audience watching the thoughts you run through your brain, the habits you apply through your hours and the way you operate around your activities. I’d bet you’d raise your game. And push a little harder to be the person you aim to be at your end. So yes, people do watch what we do, even if we fall into the trap of thinking that they don’t.
