  1. Speaking Human and Building a Talk that Lands with Dr Andrew Tagg

    Sep 16, 20261 hr 22 min

Send us Fan Mail In S7 E 5 I am delighted to welcome Dr Andrew Tagg to continue our theme of communication and expand or thinking and doing in presenting. Andrew is an emergency physician with a special interest in paediatrics, and one of the co-founders of the website Don't Forget The Bubbles. He wears many hats with a portfolio career that spans clinical medicine, workforce wellbeing leadership, education and research and as faculty for the DFTB international conference and globally renowned paediatric education platform. Andrew spends much of his time thinking, and now writing, about the art and practice of effective communication in medicine and healthcare. In this conversation we dive deeper into his most recent creation Speak Human, a newsletter dedicated to this topic. We explore some of the frameworks, practical ideas and content of his newsletter and workshops. He challenges some of our ( my) pre-existing thinking and practice in this area and I left with truly practical and actionable ideas to work with. Some of my takeaways on Speaking Human and Building a Talk That Lands Start with the message - what are the one or two things you actually want them to take away? Distil ruthlessly. No pain by PowerPoint. Use What → So What → Now What to build and test every point. Rather than “what do I want to say?” start asking “what do I want them to hear and why should they care?” Make it concrete, not abstract - a can of cola communicates a newborn's circulating blood volume better than any number does Audiences feel your nervous system before they hear your words - manage your own state first. The Power of the Pause - silence can one of the hardest but most powerful tools a speaker has Use AI as a tool to augment your content and make resources more accessible to your audience. Fundamentally you are not the audience, and you're there to serve them - know what you want them to learn, feel, and take away, and make it easy for them Thank you Andrew. I learned so much in this session. You can learn more from Andrew and about his work by subscribing to his Speak Human Newsletter linked below. 2. Strategic Optimism: Communication, Trust and Prevention with Dr Michael Bonning

    Aug 22, 20261 hr 3 min

Send us Fan Mail S 7 E 4 I am delighted to welcome Dr Michael Bonning to the podcast. Dr Bonning is a Sydney GP, with two decades of leadership across the AMA, AMSA, the RACGP and doctors' health. His clinical career has included Indigenous health, a career as a medical officer in the Royal Australian Navy, general practice ownership and management and COVID responses. He has made doctors' health a career-long focus, including as an inaugural director of the National Doctors' Health Service, six years on the board of Beyond Blue and as a director of hand n hand peer support. Michael is now running for Federal President of the AMA, on a platform to protect the value of doctors and the undermining of expertise, the importance of Medicare as a true safety net, the need to protect clinical independence and give doctors one clear, unified voice. In this episode, we talk about: • Michael's two decades of leadership across the AMA, AMSA and RACGP, and his campaign for Federal AMA President • Communicating under pressure in healthcare from the media spotlight to earning public trust • The fight against mis- and disinformation in healthcare • Public health and prevention the upstream social and commercial determinants of health, and the core pillars of prevention. Doctors' Health Advocacy as a strategic imperative not nice to have, optional extra. Key Takeaways — Communicating with Media: • Prepare - know your material before you say yes to an interview • Find out what matters - understand what the journalist or audience actually needs • Be measured, and ground your conversation in the science and the evidence • Phone a friend - check in with a trusted colleague before high-stakes media • Determine if you're the best person to give the advice • Don't become the story - keep the focus on the issue, not on yourself Thank you Michael your skilled and purpose driven leadership and support for your colleagues and patients and our healthcare system at large is the consistent thread running through this conversation. 3. Creating Spaces for Listening and Connection in Medicine with Dr Andrew Davies.

    Jul 19, 20261 hr 22 min

Send us Fan Mail In S7 E3 is a full circle moment for me as I get to welcome Dr Andrew Davies to the show. Andrew is my podcast mentor and has been instrumental in helping me get started and as an ongoing source of support and wise council. I could not think of a better guest given this season's theme of communication in medicine. Andrew has been an intensive care medicine specialist for over three decades. He experienced a period of severe depletion and burnout mid-life, mid-career at a time of overcommitment to his research career. He describes the personal and professional growth that followed and now recounts this as an experience that reshaped his entire approach to medicine and life. Today he works at Peninsula University Hospital, where he is passionate about delivering compassionate, human-centred intensive care while actively supporting the wellbeing and development of fellow clinicians. Andrew hosts his own very successful podcast, Mastering Intensive Care which recently reached 100 episodes. Here he faciliates deeply reflective conversations with his colleagues in critical care. It's a fantastic series and I heave learned a lot from Andrew and his guests to date. In this episode, we talk about: • Listening as a skill and why it matters as much in medicine as anywhere else. • Our own experiences of mid-career and mid-life burnout, and re-learning how we approach self-care and regulation as an intentional practice and ever evolving skillset. • The core pillars of wellbeing -movement, food, sleep, stress regulation and connection. Mindfulness as a muscle and the skill of making and protecting space for what matters. • Individual versus systemic approaches to wellbeing in healthcare, and why both matter. • Running, ultra endurance feats and what these teach us about community, connection, and capacity for joy. “Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive. Because what the world needs is more people who have come alive.” — Howard Thurman Links: Andrew's podcast, Mastering Intensive Care : https://masteringintensivecare.libsyn.com Upcoming Community Events: Dr Dominique Lee — Book Launch, hosted by Dr Cheryl Martin. 4. Find your Empathy Warriors. In conversation with author of "What's Been Broken Is All The More Sharp", Dr Yoo Young ( Dominique) Lee.

    Jun 28, 20261 hr 28 min

Send us Fan Mail S7 E2 Some conversations on this podcast carry more weight than others. This is one of them. Dr Yoo Young (Dominique) Lee is a radiation oncologist, educator, researcher, and the author of What's Been Broken Is All the More Sharp , a memoir that breaks a decade of silence about sexual assault within the medical profession, and examines what survivorship can look like inside a system that still struggles to acknowledge the harm it permits. When Dominique reached out to come on the podcast in the lead-up to her book's release it was an unequivocal yes from me. What followed was a conversation that took a deeply human direction. This is not a story of personal triumph. It is, as Dominique herself frames it, a relocation of shame from those who have been wrongly carrying it, onto the people and systems that should have been carrying it all along. It is also a love letter to the colleagues and friends who held her, and a call to every listener to consider whether they can be that person for someone else. Among the threads we explore: The arc from a decade of silence to a tweet, a Guardian interview, and now a book and an active campaign for independent reporting of workplace misconduct in medicine Dominique's team of avengers and empathy warriors , the people she credits with her being alive today, and what their actions tell us about what it means to be an upstander and critical supporter. The culture of medicine more broadly and how we measure a "good" clinician Her presentation and advocacy work on how the system fails victims of abuse in medicine The work of HeyBoss! her physician wellbeing initiative, dedicated to helping doctors thrive through connection, purpose, and personal growth Why so few survivors of medical mistreatment remain, and what the profession owes those who did not stay The mission to support the people in medicine who feel like misfits. Something I now consider closer to the norm than the exception. This is a conversation about what medicine has refused to address. It is, also, a conversation about the people who refused to look away. Thank you Dominique for reminding me why this podcast exists. Content note This episode discusses sexual assault, harassment and abuse in medicine, and suicide. Please take care of yourself as you listen. 5. Designing Evidence-Informed Occupational Wellbeing in Healthcare and Sustaining It Across the Arc of a Medical Career with Professor Tait Shanafelt, MD

    Jun 9, 20261 hr 18 min

Send us Fan Mail Welcome to Season 7 Episode 1 in conversation with Professor Tait Shanafelt, Chief Wellness Officer, Associate Dean, and the Jeanie & Stewart Ritchie Professor of Medicine at Stanford University, and Director of the Stanford WellMD & WellPhD Center. Across more than two decades and several hundred peer-reviewed papers, Tait’s work has fundamentally reshaped how medicine understands itself, shifting the conversation from “fix the doctor” to “fix the system.” His papers have been referenced in more episodes of this podcast, and more generally, than any other voice in the field. We begin with the conceptual shift that transitioned physician wellbeing from a personal and individual problem to an organisational responsibility referencing 2017 Nine Organizational Strategies paper. Post-pandemic The Wellbeing 2.0 paper reflected on where we have been, where we are and where we are headed. With this frame in mind we discuss the update in research, thinking and practice through the published 2025 Ten Principles to Advance Occupational Well-being paper, This article provides an organisation-facing guidebook for leaders that concentrates decades of evidence into ten foundational principles. There is a deliberate language shift from physician wellbeing to occupational wellbeing across the whole healthcare workforce. We zoom in from the strategic-systems lens to the practical work of unit-level leadership, evidence-informed tactics, and the day-to-day realities of work-life integration. We close on the five-part Career Life Cycle series, published this year, that charts the influences on wellbeing across the arc of a career, from residency and fellowship through early, mid, and late career into retirement. There are unique challenges at each stage but across the whole arc, the fundamental drivers of wellbeing are similar: autonomy, meaning, community, connection. Along the way, we discuss the iteration and evolution of the Chief Wellness Officer and Wellbeing Director courses out of Stanford WellMD pathways into this work that have shaped and continue to advance a generation of leaders globally. 7. The Art and Science of Bringing Joy and Humanity back to Medicine with Dr Graham Walker MD

    Dec 24, 20251 hr 10 min

Send us Fan Mail In season 6 Episode 6 I am delighted to welcome Graham Walker, MD to the podcast. Dr Walker is an emergency physician by clinical background who practices in San Francisco, completing his medical school training at Stanford University School of Medicine. He also majored in social policy as an undergraduate and has had a life long interest in software development and digital technology. Today he combines these interests and skills in his clinical and non-clinical roles. Graham is the co-director of Advanced Development at The Permanente Medical Group (TPMG), which delivers care for Kaiser Permanente’s 4.6 million members in Northern California. At TPMG, Graham works on practical AI development, commercialization, partnerships, and technology transformation under the Chief Innovation Officer. As a clinical informaticist, he also leads emergency and urgent care strategy for KP’s electronic medical record. With an appetite and aptitude for tech innovation and entrepreneurship Dr Walker created and founded MDCalc as a resident, a free online clinical decision support tool many clinicians including myself have been using for years now, indeed MDCalc turned 20 this month. More recently Graham co-founded the platform and community Offcall with a mission to bring joy back to medicine and facilitate contract transparency and financial literacy for US medical practitioners. These two online resources are dedicated to helping physicians globally. In his free time Graham writes about the intersection of AI, technology, and medicine, and created The Physicians’ Charter for Responsible AI , a practical guide to implementing safe, accurate, and fair AI in healthcare settings. In this conversation I have an opportunity to explore Dr Walkers perspective at the intersection of AI, technology and medicine and revisit some emerging themes from season 6 in relation to leading change and innovation in complex, siloed healthcare systems. We discuss the challenges of communicating change efforts in this context and Graham shares his practical pearls for elevating clinical voices and translating information across disparate stakeholder groups. With a unique leadership role in his own organisation in this space I was keen to explore his perspectives on creating opportunities for intrapreneurship. Dr Walker is a globally respective clinical voice on AI in healthcare and we discuss the perils and promise of AI , the Physician Charter for responsible use of AI in medicine and his Offcall survey and pending report on physicians views on the technology application and implementation in medicine ( now published and linked below) Finally it is Graham's mission to bring joy and humanity back to medicine and to use technology responsibly to augment the clinician experience and skillset enabling safer and higher quality care that is the major draw for me. Thank you Dr Walker for you work which has global relevance and reach. 8. Transforming Healthcare and Creating Value using Innovative Technologies with Associate Professor Vikram Palit

    Oct 26, 20251 hr 13 min

Send us Fan Mail I'm delighted to be back with S6 E9 and to welcome Associate Professor Vikram Palit to the podcast. Vikram is a Paediatric Respiratory Physician by clinical background and a Senior Lecturer in Health Systems science. He has held senior leadership roles across academia, clinical medicine and health services in Australia and the United Kingdom. He is also the founder and CEO of ConsultMed https://www.consultmed.co/about-us/ Consultmed brings together his passion for healthcare and embracing technology to deliver better outcomes for his patients. When he is not in a team huddle, a design workshop or doing a solution demo, you can find him quietly unplugging fax machines in hospitals and clinics near you. Indeed in this episode he makes a compelling case to #axethefax. In this conversation I have an opportunity to dive deeper into Vik's journey so far as clinician, health systems scientist and entrepreneur trying to solve real world clinical problems with modern technology solutions. He discusses his previous academic studies and practical on the job exposure to health systems change, value-based care and digital health in the UK NHS and how this served as a catalyst for his founder story. Jun 28, 20251 hr 32 min

Send us Fan Mail In S6 E5 I am delighted to welcome Dr Colin West MD PhD to the podcast. Dr West is a practising physician, educator, biostatistician and he is globally renowned for his research in professional and organisational wellbeing in healthcare. He has been deeply embedded in research work in this area with colleagues at Mayo Clinic for over two decades to advance and inform healthcare organisational and clinician wellbeing leadership, strategy and evidence-informed system and work unit interventions to promote physician wellbeing and reduce distress. Dr West is the inaugural program director for physician wellbeing at Mayo Clinic. He is the recipient of multiple awards for his research and education work and collaborates extensively with scientists and groups within and outside Mayo Clinic. External collaborations include members of leadership in the American Medical Association. His work with colleagues including Dr Tait Shanafelt has been published in multiple top-tier journals, including the Lancet, the Journal of the American Medical Association, Annals of Internal Medicine, and JAMA Internal Medicine. In this conversation we discuss the evolution of his work over the past two decades. We learn how the combination of unique skills, intellectual curiosity and a deep investment and sense of purpose led to a critical coalition of colleagues who have helped to advance and build evidence-informed road maps and organisational blueprints to promote physician wellbeing and professional satisfaction and reduce burnout and distress. I was particularly keen to explore some of the key intervention studies including the COMPASS trail ( Colleagues Meeting to Promote and Sustain Satisfaction) and the research about leadership capability and coaching/development. This episode is full of both the science and practical wisdom Dr West brings as a clinical expert in this field and yet still scratches the surface of his work. A lot of his efforts today centre on attention to the MVPs ( meaning values and purpose )of professional wellbeing for his colleagues and the work they do in turn for their patients. He finishes with a powerful call to action at this juncture and critical inflection point for healthcare and clinicians globally. This is fundamentally important work and I am grateful to Colin and colleagues for continuing to advance our knowledge and applied practice. She has been published in The Australian , RM Williams Magazine , The Sydney Morning Herald , Kevin MD , Australian Medical Students Association Magazine , The ANZ Journal of Surgery and on a variety of other platforms. Her most widely read article was an anonymous piece, 'There is something rotten inside the medical profession', which detailed the stress of medical training and was shared more than 22,000 times and re-published widely around the world. This article led to the start of a conversation that her novel Going Under seeks to continue. Her debut novel Going Under , a fictionalised account of her internship, was an Australian best seller. She is passionate about First Nations health and improving health equity to people who live in regional and remote parts of the country. In this conversation we discuss Sonia's passion for writing which pre-dated her physiotherapy and medical careers and learn more about her motivations to write, writing process and hopes for her words. Sonia tells me more how she became involved with the Medical Benevolent association as a councillor and her work to support doctors' health and wellbeing and wider advocacy for needed healthcare system and cultural reform. I am incredibly honoured to be joined but not one but two "giants" in healthcare clinical leadership, Dr Don Berwick President Emeritus and Senior Fellow at at the Institute for Health Improvement and also special guest co-host Professor Catherine Crock Chair and Founder of the Hush Foundation. ( More complete bios in episode) In this powerful conversation we again use Marshall Ganz's perfect story arc of self, us and now to explore Dr Berwick's own story and journey of healthcare improvement, we discuss how important it is not do this work alone and organise and bring others will us. We learn that there is method in mobilisation as beautifully demonstrated by the success of the 100, 000 lives campaign. Leadership remains the pervasive theme throughout and the call to action extends to all of us in healthcare but particularly to the highest levels of leadership to courage and kindness, to dare greatly, get rid of stupid stuff, deeply listen and engage clinicians and patients and be prepared to change mind and direction with new and involving information. Whilst a short podcast conversation cannot do full justice to the wealth of combined knowledge and wisdom of these two senior clinical leaders, I know you, like I, will gain so much from this one and I encourage you to explore more of the resources we discuss linked below. 17. Truly Human Leadership with Mr Bob Chapman

    Dec 18, 20241 hr 18 min

Send us Fan Mail In S5 E 16 I am delighted to welcome Mr Bob Chapman to the podcast. Mr Chapman "The People's CEO" is Chairman and CEO of St. Louis, MO-based Barry-Wehmiller, a $3.6B global capital equipment and engineering solutions company with more than 12,000 team members. Mr Chapman became the senior executive of Barry- Wehmiller in 1975 at age 30 when the 90-year-old business had $20 million in revenue, outdated technology and a very weak financial position. As you will hear in this conversation despite the obstacles, Chapman applied a unique blend of strategy and culture over the next 45+ years in leading Barry-Wehmiller through more than 130 successful acquisitions. Over the past two decades, a series of realizations led him away from traditional management practices to Truly Human Leadership--a people-centric approach where his team members feel valued, cared for and integral to the company’s purpose. At Barry-Wehmiller, they have a unique measure of success: by the way they touch the lives of people. Chapman’s experiences and the transformation he championed were the inspiration behind his 2015 WSJ bestseller Everybody Matters: The Extraordinary Power of Caring for Your People Like Family. The book is co- authored by Raj Sisodia, founder and co-author of Conscious Capitalism. . In 2016, Harvard Business School released a case study featuring Barry-Wehmiller’s unique approach to business, which is now taught at 70+ business schools around the world. In 2013, Bob and his wife Cynthia launched a nonprofit, Chapman Foundation for Caring Communities, to bring the company’s groundbreaking Listen Like a Leader training to communities. And, in 2015, the Chapman & Co. Leadership Institute was founded to bring Barry-Wehmiller’s trademark culture transformation and leadership training to for-profit organizations. I am joined here by special guest co-host Dr Chris Edmond ( S 5 E7) and together we have the opportunity to explore the leadership, strategy and culture which define the Chapman and Barry-Wehmiller organisational approach today. Mr Chapman himself credits his success in the face of adversity over the years to the combination of the core tenets of common sense, creativity and a positive attitude. His story, journey and work are testament to what is possible at the intersection of great business strategy and profound care for people. He wants everyone to see that caring for people and giving them meaning, purpose and fulfilment through their work is not in disharmony with creating value. If the key mission and work of this podcast is to mine for the pockets of excellent leadership and practice so that we can all learn and evolve, then we have certainly struck gold again here.
