Preview: What if moving faster is not always a sign of better leadership? In this episode of Life Acumen at Work , we explore the hidden cost of speed - what gets lost when decisiveness, urgency, and constant motion become virtues in themselves. From the difference between reversible and irreversible decisions to the impact of speed on dissent, reflection, and learning, this episode asks a deeper question: are you moving quickly because the situation demands it, or because uncertainty feels uncomfortable? For senior leaders, founders, and CXOs, this is a reflection on judgment, adaptability, and knowing when to accelerate - and when to pause and reconsider. Key Points: Speed is not the problem - using the same speed for every decision is. Reversible decisions can benefit from rapid experimentation, while high-stakes, difficult-to-reverse decisions often require more debate, challenge, and reflection. Decisiveness can sometimes be driven by discomfort with uncertainty. Senior leaders may act quickly not because the situation demands speed, but because ambiguity is psychologically uncomfortable. A culture of speed can unintentionally suppress dissent. When momentum becomes a virtue, disagreement can start to look like obstruction - causing valuable information, inconvenient signals, and alternative perspectives to disappear from the conversation. Fast execution does not necessarily mean fast learning. Organizations can move quickly while repeatedly acting on the same assumptions. Reflection is what turns feedback and activity into deeper learning. The real leadership capability is knowing when to change gears. Effective leaders distinguish between execution speed, decision speed, and learning speed - and retain the judgment to accelerate, pause, reconsider, and change their minds when the evidence changes. Resources Mentioned: Effective decision making in the age of urgency | McKinsey McKinsey & Company, “Effective decision making in the age of urgency.” The research examines decision quality and velocity across different categories of organizational decisions. The Many Rewards of CEO Reflection | BCG Boston Consulting Group, “The Many Rewards of CEO Reflection.” The article reports CEOs spending roughly 5–15% of their time on reflection while generally aspiring to more. Deloitte, “The Diversity and Inclusion Revolution.” Deloitte's analysis links inclusive leadership with perceived improvements in decision quality, collaboration and team performance. Jeff Bezos/Amazon, 2015 letter to shareholders, including the distinction between reversible and irreversible decisions and the idea of high-velocity decision making. Some decisions are consequential and irreversible or nearly irreversible - one-way doors - and these decisions must be made methodically, carefully, slowly, with great deliberation and consultation. If you walk through and don’t like what you see on the other side, you can’t get back to where you were before. We can call these Type 1 decisions. But most decisions aren’t like that - they are changeable, reversible - they’re two-way doors. If you’ve made a suboptimal Type 2 decision, you don’t have to live with the consequences for that long. You can reopen the door and go back through. Type 2 decisions can and should be made quickly by high judgment individuals or small groups. How to See Beyond Positions: When a tough conversation gets tense, it often stops being about the real issue - and turns into a quiet battle over who will “blink first.” In this episode, you’ll learn how capable leaders get trapped defending a position, why that kills discovery and alignment, and the simple shift that lowers the emotional temperature fast: stop asking “How do I get them to agree?” and start asking, “What are they trying to protect?” If you want firmer decisions and better relationships, this one will change how you lead.
Stop Negotiating Your Position explains how positional bargaining turns problem-solving into a contest of credibility, slowing decisions and damaging trust - especially for senior executives who must preserve relationships beyond the deal. Using examples (Infosys board crisis, Camp David Accords, Disney–Pixar, and Oracle–PeopleSoft), it contrasts positions (what you demand) with interests (why you need it). It recommends diagnosing whether a situation is collaborative or a power contest, clarifying both sides’ underlying needs, using objective criteria, and being hard on the problem while staying respectful to people.
