Defamation laws have a long and strange history, and in recent years, these laws have been leveraged in order to silence women who attempt to speak out about abuse. In the midst of the cultural reckoning incited by the #MeToo movement, many women across the globe are facing a legal reckoning. This is the central point of the new documentary Silenced. The documentary's main subject is Jennifer Robinson, a human rights lawyer who represented Amber Heard during her testimony in the libel case brought by Johnny Depp against The Sun newspaper. Dissociative Identity Disorder (formerly Multiple Personality Disorder) has long been misrepresented and misunderstood, but Dr Jeni Haynes is here to change that. In 2019, she made international headlines when she testified against her father, who was the perpetrator of years of sexual, physical and psychological abuse upon her. It was the first time in the Australian legal system to accept testimony from alters within a person living with DID was accepted as evidence in a criminal prosecution. Since her landmark case, Jeni has co-authored a memoir, and is the subject of a new feature-length documentary 'We Are Jeni'. Abbie sits down with Dr Jeni to discuss why she still identifies with the term MPD (but disagrees with the disorder part), how her alters make decisions, and her journey from not being believed to finding justice.
