Send us Fan Mail Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too! This week, Lauren is joined once again by Justin Prust for a conversation about something that can make a huge difference to your confidence, your skills and even the opportunities that come your way: continuing to learn. And learning doesn’t have to mean signing up for another qualification or finding hours you simply don’t have. It could be 15 minutes with a book, 20 minutes training your own dog, listening to a podcast, watching someone else train or simply having a great conversation with someone who knows something you don’t. Lauren and Justin explore how those small opportunities to learn can build confidence and create momentum – and why learning becomes even more powerful when you share what you’ve discovered with somebody else. One person learns something, passes it on, inspires someone else to have a go… and suddenly learning becomes giving too. There’s also plenty of chat about the less tidy side of learning: trying something you’re terrible at, being willing to get things wrong and accepting that progress doesn’t always happen in a straight line. Whether it’s dog training, reading, surfing, whistling or mastering a completely ridiculous new skill, staying curious keeps us growing. Most importantly, learning should be fun. When we enjoy the process, we’re far more likely to remember it, keep doing it and share that enthusiasm with the people around us. So what could you learn today? Send us Fan Mail Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too! What happens when dogs and horses meet out on a walk – and how do we make sure everyone stays safe? This week, Lauren is joined by Michele, who brings decades of experience with horses alongside her work with Naughty But Nice dogs, to talk about the responsibility we have when dogs, horses and livestock share the same spaces. A horse with a rider can be a very strange picture for a dog. It’s big, it moves differently, it can appear suddenly around a corner – and for dogs who already struggle with novelty, movement, chasing or high arousal, that can be a LOT to process. From the rider’s side, a loose dog approaching or chasing a horse can be genuinely dangerous. Horses are powerful flight animals, things can go wrong incredibly quickly, and “my dog is friendly” doesn’t mean very much when that dog can’t be called back. Lauren and Michele talk about what having your dog under control really means, why a brilliant recall matters, and the practical choices you can make when you spot a horse ahead. They also explore how communicating with the rider, understanding your individual dog and preparing for these situations before they happen can make everyone’s experience safer. And that preparation is a huge part of this episode. From mentally rehearsing what you’ll do when a distraction appears to practising recall when there isn’t a horse in sight, Lauren and Michele share how training ahead can help both you and your dog respond differently when it really matters. You’ll also hear why Scatter Recall is such a powerful game, alongside long lines, whistle recalls, emergency recalls and the everyday skills that can give you far more confidence around horses, livestock, cyclists, dogs and other distractions. If recall is something you’d love to strengthen with your dog, Games Club is packed with games to help you build those skills – and right now, you can come and try it for just £1. Let’s build dogs who are ready for the situations they might meet – and walks that are safer and more enjoyable for everyone. Send us Fan Mail Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too! This week, Lauren and Alice are tackling one of the most common – and frustrating – struggles in dog ownership: lead pulling. If you've ever found yourself wondering why your dog still pulls despite everything you've tried, this episode might just change the way you think about your walks. Together, they explore why pulling works so well for our dogs – and how every successful repetition can make the behaviour stronger. Whether pulling gets your dog to the park faster, closer to an irresistible smell or simply towards whatever exciting thing comes next, they're learning all the time. Add in the opposition reflex that encourages dogs to push against pressure, and it's easy to see how walks can quickly turn into a tug of war. Lauren and Alice also unpack the role that arousal and emotion play in pulling, and why changing the behaviour means looking beyond what's happening at the end of the lead. You'll hear stories from their own dogs, including Skittle and Bonnie, and discover why spotting the early signs – from a head dropping into hunting mode to an intense visual stare – gives you the opportunity to change what happens next. Most importantly, they explore how to interrupt the rehearsal loop and start building something different. From disengagement and re-engagement to check-ins, reinforcement and simple games you can practise before you ever tackle a challenging walk, you'll discover how small, intentional repetitions can build the skills you actually want your dog to rehearse. This isn't about finding a quick trick to stop your dog pulling. It's about understanding the dog in front of you, changing what the walk predicts, and building the confidence, connection and skills that make walking together feel completely different. Ready to transform your walks? The Stress Free Walks Blueprint is here. We'll guide you step by step through the games, strategies and foundations that help you move from pulling, frustration and stressful walks towards calmer, more connected adventures together. Send us Fan Mail Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too! This week, Lauren and Alice tackle one of the biggest frustrations in dog training: why does your dog seem to listen perfectly at home, then forget everything the moment you step outside? If you've ever wondered why a brilliant behaviour in your living room completely disappears on a walk - and how to bridge that gap - this episode is for you. Together, they explore why dogs don't automatically transfer skills from one environment to another, and why expecting them to do so can leave both ends of the lead feeling frustrated. You'll discover why training for the situation is so much more effective than trying to train in the situation, and how building the right foundations before heading into busy environments can completely change the outcome. Lauren and Alice also share the practical progression they use to help dogs succeed in the real world. From your living room and garden to quiet public spaces, secure fields, industrial estates and even car parks, they explain how carefully choosing your training environments gives your dog the chance to practise the right behaviours before distractions become overwhelming. You'll hear why these often-overlooked locations can be some of the very best places to build loose lead walking, engagement and confidence. Along the way, they discuss why taking a short break from traditional walks can sometimes be the kindest thing you can do, how to prevent unwanted rehearsal before it becomes a habit, and why setting your dog up to succeed is one of the fastest ways to build skills that genuinely stick. Whether you're raising a puppy, living with a reactive dog or simply dreaming of calmer, more connected walks, this episode is packed with practical ideas you can start using straight away. Ready to take those brilliant skills from your living room out into the real world? Inside our Stress Free Walks Blueprint we'll show you exactly how to bridge that gap, build confidence in real-life environments, and set your dog up for success on walks. https://absolutedogs.me/blueprint Support the show If you’re loving the podcast, you’ll love our NEW Sexier than a Squirrel Dog Training Challenge even more! Send us Fan Mail Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too! This week, Lauren and Karen tackle one of the biggest frustrations dog owners face: why does the whole world seem more exciting than you? If you've ever felt like your dog would rather sniff a hedge, chase a squirrel or investigate a discarded sandwich wrapper than pay you any attention, you're definitely not alone. Together, they explore why the environment is so incredibly rewarding for our dogs. From irresistible smells and moving wildlife to the unpredictability of everyday life, you'll discover why dogs naturally find the world so hard to resist - and why it isn't because they're stubborn, disobedient or "don't care" about you. Lauren explains why trying to compete with a squirrel using a biscuit is rarely a winning strategy, and how building value in your relationship changes everything. Lauren and Karen also dive into the practical ways you can start becoming part of the adventure instead of competing with it. You'll hear why changing direction at the right moment, varying your rewards, using play and sniffing intentionally, and creating opportunities for connection can all make a huge difference when you're out and about. They also discuss why the walk starts long before you ever clip the lead on, how rehearsal shapes future behaviour, and why preventing unwanted habits is often far easier than trying to undo them later. The conversation also takes a thoughtful look at puppies and reactive dogs, exploring why building emotional skills before diving into busy environments can have a lasting impact. Karen shares Rupert's story and reflects on how one difficult experience changed not only her dog, but also the way she felt on every walk afterwards. Together, they discuss why feeling safe matters just as much for the person holding the lead as it does for the dog, and how thoughtful preparation can help both ends of the lead enjoy walking together again. Whether your dog is distracted by squirrels, other dogs, discarded food or simply the excitement of being outdoors, this episode will help you understand what's really going on - and why changing the way you think about walks can be the first step towards changing the walks themselves. Ready to discover the foundations of calmer, happier, more connected walks? Send us Fan Mail Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too! This week, Karen turns interviewer as Lauren shares the story behind one of the toughest dogs she's ever lived with: Skittle. If you've ever wondered how a dog trainer could end up dreading walks, this episode is for you. Skittle is brilliantly clever, endlessly enthusiastic, and always five steps ahead. She could spot opportunities before Lauren even knew they existed, whether that was disappearing into a bog, rolling in fox poo, hunting wildlife or pulling so hard she left Lauren in pain. Together, Lauren and Karen unpack how those behaviours developed, why even experienced trainers can get caught out by rehearsal, and how life, grief and loving a dog "just a little bit too much" can sometimes blur the boundaries that dogs really need. Most importantly, Lauren shares how everything changed. Listen in as she talks through the two principles that transformed Skittle's walks: stopping rehearsal of the behaviours you don't want, and investing consistently in the behaviours you do. You'll hear why taking a break from normal walks can sometimes be the kindest decision, how relationship was the missing piece of the puzzle, and why building real-life skills mattered far more than chasing flashy training goals. Karen and Lauren also dive into the practical games that made the difference, including Skittle's Game, designed to flip the value from charging forwards to choosing connection instead. Along the way they explore the importance of starting walks well, preventing pulling before it begins, creating consistency between handlers, and using reinforcement strategically so food becomes a safety tool rather than a lifelong dependency. Whether your dog pulls, reacts, hunts or simply makes walks feel exhausting, the underlying principles remain the same. Ready to build walks you actually enjoy again? The Stress Free Walks Blueprint is now available. Inside, we guide you through the same games and strategies that transformed life with Skittle. https://absolutedogs.me/blueprint Support the show If you’re loving the podcast, you’ll love our NEW Sexier than a Squirrel Dog Training Challenge even more! Send us Fan Mail Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too! This week, Lauren is joined by the brilliant Linda Hughes to introduce one very small dog with a very big personality. Meet Bobble – a two-kilo silver toy poodle who lives with four Border Collies, has absolutely no concept of being tiny, and somehow ended up with his own treehouse on Linda's desk. Living with a toy dog comes with its own unique set of considerations, and in this episode we explore what really changes when your newest family member is small enough to disappear beneath a Border Collie. From carefully managing play with bigger dogs and adding sofa steps to protect tiny joints, to resisting the temptation to accidentally create a dog who expects breakfast to arrive on a spoon, Lauren and Linda share the funny moments and practical lessons that have come with life alongside Bobble. The conversation also turns to training and day-to-day life. You'll hear why small dogs still need great recall, how easy it is to overlook the "easy" dog while managing everyone else, and why that could quickly lead to a tiny dog who thinks the rules don't apply. Linda also shares how she approaches grooming, clipping and coat care, including building positive associations with a dedicated grooming station so handling becomes just another part of life rather than something to dread. We also chat about toy breed fitness, supporting dogs with patella concerns, choosing toys that suit tiny mouths, and teaching a simple cue that helps manage breed-typical barking. And of course, no episode about Bobble would be complete without the story of how a firm "no dogs on the bed" rule quietly disappeared the moment one impossibly cute toy poodle curled up between the pillows. Whether you already share your home with a toy dog, you're thinking about welcoming one into your family, or you simply love hearing about the realities of life with dogs of every shape and size, this episode is guaranteed to leave you smiling. Send us Fan Mail Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too! This week, Lauren is joined by Alice to explore one of the most misunderstood pieces of dog training equipment there is: the muzzle. Whether you've never considered muzzle training before or you already have a dog who wears one, this episode is all about changing the conversation and showing how a muzzle can create more freedom, not less. Far too often, muzzles only come out when there's a crisis - an emergency vet visit, a bite risk, a scavenging habit, or new legal requirements. Lauren and Alice explain why waiting until you need a muzzle is one of the biggest mistakes owners can make. Instead, they explore how games-based training can build confidence long before the muzzle is ever needed, transforming it from something a dog tolerates into something they happily choose to wear. You'll also hear why muzzles aren't just for reactive dogs, but can be invaluable for cooperative care, grooming, travel, introductions, and preventing dangerous scavenging. The conversation also tackles some of the practical realities many owners face. Lauren and Alice discuss choosing a well-fitting basket muzzle that allows panting, drinking and taking treats, introducing new equipment through tiny, achievable steps, and making thoughtful adjustments to improve comfort. They also talk openly about breed-specific legislation, public perception, and why advocating for your dog with confidence is far more powerful than worrying about what other people might think. Whether your dog wears a muzzle today or you simply want to be prepared for whatever life brings, this episode will help you see muzzle training in a completely different light. It's a practical life skill that can improve safety, protect welfare, and open up opportunities for dogs to enjoy more of the world with confidence. Ready to get started? Send us Fan Mail Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too! This week, we’re continuing our series of episodes exploring what concept training actually is and how it shows up in real life with your dog. We’re taking the concepts you hear us talk about all the time, breaking them down, and making them practical, relatable, and easy to spot in your everyday training. This time, Lauren is joined by the brilliant Alice to explore one of the most important foundations for calm, connected walks: proximity. Ever feel like the moment your dog spots something interesting, you stop existing? Whether it's another dog, a squirrel, a jogger or an exciting scent, so many everyday struggles - from pulling on the lead to unreliable recall - come back to one simple question: where does your dog believe the value is? In this episode, Lauren and Alice explore why proximity isn't about keeping your dog glued to your side, but about building a dog who genuinely wants to stay connected because that's where the good stuff happens. Along the way, they share real-life stories that highlight just how much emotion can sit behind proximity. From a dog unexpectedly disappearing after deer to a young Border Collie finding human closeness overwhelming because it predicted restraint, you'll discover why some dogs naturally avoid being close, how we can accidentally poison proximity by making it signal "the fun's over", and how to change that picture. You'll also hear plenty of practical games you can start using straight away. From Middle, Middle Toes and Leg Weaves to Magic Hand, Two Feet On and simple collar-grab exercises, Lauren and Alice explain how these games build value for being near you, make handling feel positive, and create a dog who happily checks in both on and off lead. They also explore why proximity becomes such a powerful safety skill for reactive dogs, nervous dogs, and any dog learning to navigate busy environments with confidence. Send us Fan Mail Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too! This week, Lauren is joined by the brilliant Linda Hughes to tackle a question that sparks some fascinating discussion: what would you tell someone who's completely new to dog training? Whether you're dreaming of becoming a professional trainer, you've just welcomed a puppy into your life, or you're simply trying to become the best trainer you can be for your own dog, this episode is packed with honest, practical advice from two people who have spent years learning from dogs, owners, mistakes, successes, and everything in between. Lauren and Linda chat about why experience matters so much, and why spending time with lots of different dogs often teaches you more than any qualification ever could. They discuss the value of rescue and rehoming environments, the importance of handling dogs with different personalities, motivations and challenges, and why some of the biggest lessons come from the dogs who don't make training easy. The conversation also dives into one of the most important skills a trainer can develop: knowing your limits. From aggression cases and bite risks to difficult home environments and client expectations, Lauren and Linda share why referring a case on isn't a sign of failure - it's a sign of professionalism. You'll hear why good trainers stay curious, keep learning, and aren't afraid to ask for help when they need it. They also explore the human side of dog training. From avoiding industry cliques and maintaining healthy boundaries, to balancing online learning with hands-on experience, this episode is full of insights for anyone looking to build a long, sustainable future in the dog world. And for new dog owners, there's plenty here too. Send us Fan Mail Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too! This week, Lauren is joined by the brilliant Justin Prust for a conversation about something that affects every area of life and dog training: confidence. We talk about confidence all the time when it comes to our dogs, helping them feel safe, optimistic, and ready to take on the world. But what happens when our own confidence takes a hit? How do we keep showing up for our dogs, our families, and ourselves when life throws us a curveball? In this honest and personal episode, Lauren and Justin share experiences of navigating major life challenges, including divorce, grief, prolonged stress, and those moments that leave even the most confident people questioning themselves. Together, they explore the difference between confidence built on external validation and confidence that comes from a deeper sense of self-trust, purpose, and resilience. You'll hear practical ideas for strengthening confidence in everyday life, from tracking small daily wins and practising gratitude, to celebrating progress, creating momentum, and recognising just how much you've achieved when it feels like you're standing still. Lauren and Justin also discuss the role of movement, exercise, nutrition, self-care, and community, and why confidence often grows through consistent actions rather than dramatic breakthroughs. Along the way, they explore some of the surprisingly simple tools that can help shift your state when you're struggling, including music, humour, connection, pattern interrupts, and even the power of a favourite outfit, scent, or ritual to help you step into your best self. Whether you're working through a difficult season, rebuilding after a setback, or simply looking for ways to feel more capable and grounded, this episode is packed with practical ideas and honest reflections that will leave you feeling encouraged and empowered. Send us Fan Mail Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too! This week, Lauren is joined by Linda for a candid conversation about the mistakes that have shaped them as dog trainers and dog owners. Not the polished success stories, but the moments they would do differently, the lessons they learned the hard way, and the experiences that changed how they see dogs forever. From creating a Border Collie with endless intensity and no off switch, to teaching a reactive dog to scan the environment for trouble, they explore how easy it is to accidentally reinforce the very behaviours you're trying to avoid. Along the way, they discuss the hidden cost of drive, arousal and obsession, and why some of the things that look impressive in training can become problematic in everyday life. The conversation also turns to physical wellbeing and the lessons that come with experience. Lauren and Linda share stories of sport dogs who pushed through discomfort, injuries that taught them to look more carefully, and how their views on repetitive ball throwing, impact and canine fitness have evolved over time. You'll hear why high-drive dogs can be particularly difficult to read, and why enthusiasm doesn't always mean a dog's body is coping well. Alongside the serious lessons are plenty of lighter moments too. Runaway dogs, stolen sandwiches, Christmas turkey theft, unexpected chinchillas and the kinds of stories that are funny now, but perhaps weren't quite so funny at the time. Because if you've lived with dogs for long enough, you'll know that some of your greatest learning comes wrapped in chaos. Most importantly, this episode is a reminder that nobody ever knows it all. No matter how many dogs you've owned, how many qualifications you hold, or how much experience you've built, dogs have a remarkable way of keeping you humble. The best trainers aren't the ones who never make mistakes - they're the ones who keep learning from them. Ready to listen in? Send us Fan Mail Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too! This week, Lauren is joined by the brilliant Sam to answer a listener question that so many owners of worried dogs will recognise: what do you do when the very confidence-building games designed to help your dog seem to scare them in the first place? Whether it's a cardboard box, a crinkly bottle, a piece of paper on the floor, or simply something unfamiliar appearing in the environment, some dogs find the world a much bigger and scarier place than others. In this episode, Lauren and Sam explore why confidence building isn't about following a game exactly as it's demonstrated, but about finding the right starting point for the dog in front of you. Together, they discuss how to break optimism games down into tiny, achievable steps. For some dogs, that might mean playing Cardboard Chaos. For others, it might simply mean being comfortable in the same room as a cardboard box. You'll hear why progress often comes from looking for the smallest possible win and building from there, rather than pushing for the finished picture too quickly. Lauren and Sam also chat about the role of movement, choice, and pressure release when working with nervous dogs. They explore why giving a dog the option to leave can actually help them become braver, how owner pressure can unintentionally make confidence struggles harder, and why keeping training light, playful, and enjoyable often creates the biggest breakthroughs. The conversation also highlights the importance of reinforcement. From food motivation and toy play to everyday opportunities for earning rewards, you'll hear why "trainability is susceptibility to reinforcement" and how building a stronger reinforcement history can transform what is possible for a worried dog. Lauren shares examples from her own dogs, while Sam talks about helping a noise-sensitive dog learn that sounds and novelty can predict fun rather than worry. Most importantly, this episode is a reminder that there is no single blueprint for confidence building. The best training plan is always the one that works for the dog standing in front of you. If you're living with a nervous, cautious, or pessimistic dog, this episode is packed with practical ideas, encouragement, and simple next steps to help you build confidence one small win at a time. Send us Fan Mail Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too! This week, Lauren is joined by Dan to tackle something that sits behind every training session, every result, and every relationship with your dog: mindset. Because no amount of better treats, tools, or techniques will compensate for a cluttered, inconsistent, or reactive headspace. When your thinking is off, your timing slips, your patience shortens, and your dog feels it. In this episode, we dig into how a strong handler mindset is actually built, through small, repeatable actions. Dan shares why having one clear outcome for each session matters, how to break training down into simple chunks (think step-by-step, not all at once), and why trusting the process is what eventually gets you to that point where everything starts to click. Lauren and Dan also explore the impact of the people around you. From training partners to wider communities, who you spend time with shapes how you think, how you train, and what you expect of yourself. You’ll hear honest insights into competition, comparison, and how to push for high performance without letting it become personal. We also go into the patterns that often hold people back - getting stuck on setbacks, replaying problems, or measuring yourself against highlight reels instead of real progress. You’ll learn practical ways to shift your focus, track wins, and course-correct day by day so progress stays steady, even when things feel messy. If you want better dog training results, it starts with better thinking - and this episode will give you simple, practical tools you can use straight away. Send us Fan Mail Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too! This week, Lauren is joined by Karen for a conversation all about cooperative care: what it is, why it matters, and why so many dogs are simply enduring handling rather than truly feeling safe with it. Because a dog standing still at the groomers, freezing for the vet, or wriggling away from a harness isn’t necessarily “fine” at all. Often, it’s a dog with no real understanding, no predictability, and no way to say “give me a moment, I’m not comfortable with that.” In this episode, we explore what happens when handling becomes a conversation instead of a battle. From muzzle training and harness struggles to grooming, nail clipping, tick removal, blood draws, and end-of-life care, cooperative care gives dogs a way to understand what’s happening and participate willingly, one small step at a time. Lauren and Karen talk through some of the practical foundation skills that make the biggest difference, including permission chin targets, bar holds, head-in-a-box games, and how proofing and gradual layering help dogs build genuine confidence around handling. You’ll hear why reinforcement alone is not the same as consent, especially for food-motivated dogs who may still be deeply uncomfortable, and why giving dogs the ability to pause or opt out can completely change the emotional picture. We also dive into the real-life impact this training can have. From smoother blood draws at the vets and calmer grooming appointments to reducing stress around harnesses and medical procedures, cooperative care isn’t just “nice training” - it’s a practical skillset that supports your relationship with your dog through every stage of life. Along the way, Karen shares honest reflections about living with a dog who finds handling difficult, the signs she wishes she’d recognised earlier, and how changing the conversation has transformed everyday interactions that once felt stressful or confrontational. If you want handling to feel calmer, clearer, and more collaborative for both you and your dog, this episode is packed with practical ideas you can start using right away. Send us Fan Mail Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too! This week, we’re continuing our new series of episodes exploring what concept training actually is and how it shows up in real life with your dog. We’ll be taking concepts you may have heard us talk about before, breaking them down, and making them practical, relatable, and easy to spot in your own training sessions and day-to-day interactions with your dog. This time, Lauren is joined by the brilliant Linda to unpack one of the most important concepts in all of dog training: engagement. Engagement isn’t just about your dog looking at you. It’s about your dog choosing you. Choosing to check in. Choosing to stay connected. Choosing to come back mentally, even when the world is busy, exciting, distracting, or full of things that normally pull their attention away. Lauren and Linda explain why engagement underpins so many other skills - recall, agility, obedience, heelwork, calm walks, even day-to-day life in the house - and highlight the importance of the moments we often miss: the ones where your dog asks, “What next?” You’ll hear why rewarding re-engagement changes everything and how building a strong reinforcement history helps your dog learn to seek connection rather than waiting to cued repeatedly. They also talk about fading food rewards sensibly, why you don’t need to carry treats forever, and how value, timing, and consistency shape habits over time. Play gets a huge spotlight too, because engagement should feel good for both ends of the lead. Lauren and Linda discuss using toys, movement, celebration, and genuine interaction to build motivation and excitement in training - while also recognising that different dogs enjoy different styles of reinforcement. Lauren and Linda also consider the balance between engagement and appropriate disengagement. Because the goal isn’t a dog who pesters you endlessly for work - it’s a dog who understands when the game is on, when the game is finished, and how to switch between focus and relaxation successfully. Send us Fan Mail Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too! This week, Lauren is joined by Michelle for a deep dive into parasite prevention, fleas, ticks, worms, gut health, and the growing questions around routine chemical treatments. Because while spot-ons, tablets, and collars are often seen as the “normal” route, more and more dog owners are starting to ask: what are these products actually doing to our dogs, our homes, and the environment around us? In this episode, we talk through the pros, cons, and wider impact of common flea and tick treatments, including why many products only work once a tick or flea bites, and what that means when we’re talking about tick-borne diseases like Lyme disease and babesiosis. We also explore some of the side effects owners report seeing, from nausea and digestive upset to neurological wobbliness, and why dosage can become especially tricky for very small dogs. Lauren and Michelle also talk through a different approach: prevention through consistency, daily habits, and supporting the dog as a whole. You’ll hear why they choose natural ingredients, how gut health plays a surprisingly important role in resilience, and why they prefer testing before treating wherever possible. From worm counts to stool testing, this episode challenges the idea of broad-brush “just in case” treatments and looks at the growing issue of resistance over time. We also get practical. You’ll learn how to check your dog properly for fleas and ticks, where ticks commonly hide, how to spot flea dirt with a comb, and easy ways to feed preventative powders consistently, including a simple kefir ice cube hack your dog will probably love. Along the way, there’s a wider conversation too, about waterways, bees, environmental impact, and why one spot-on treatment on a large dog can reportedly kill up to 25 million bees. It’s a huge topic, and whether you’re already using a natural approach or just starting to question the status quo, this episode will give you plenty to think about. If you’ve ever wondered whether there’s another way to approach flea, tick, and worm prevention, this episode is for you. Want to explore A-OK9’s Bug-K9 range? Send us Fan Mail Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too! This week, Sam is back to tackle a challenge so many dog owners face: car chaos. That moment the keys jingle or the engine starts and suddenly your dog is whining, pacing, panting, or barking out of the window. For some dogs it’s over-excitement, for others it’s stress or even nausea, but either way, it can make every journey feel like hard work. So what’s really going on? For so many dogs, the car is loaded with meaning. Walks, vet visits, new places… It all builds anticipation fast. And that anticipation can tip into over-arousal or stress before you’ve even left the drive. Listen in as Lauren and Sam share practical strategies to help you change that picture. From creating “non-event” car journeys that lead to nothing, to simply hanging out in a parked vehicle, you’ll learn how to remove the hype and help your dog switch off. They also explore why crate training can be a game-changer for calm travel, creating safety, structure, and reducing visual triggers that often keep dogs on edge. As the conversation continues, Lauren and Sam get into the detail of reinforcement too, because if calmness in the car is your current struggle, that’s where your training focus needs to be. From hand feeding and using daily food to build positive associations, to scatter feeding and long-lasting chews, this is all about changing how your dog feels about the car. If your dog struggles with car travel, this episode will give you a clear, practical plan you can start straight away. Send us Fan Mail Welcome to this episode of the Sexier than a Squirrel podcast, the podcast that brings you real-life dog training results, and sometimes human training ones too! This week, Lauren is joined once again by canine physiotherapist and hydrotherapist Mel to tackle a topic that every dog owner thinks they’ve got covered: exercise. Because your dog’s walk should be the best part of their day… not the moment an avoidable injury begins. From dogs launching out of the boot and sprinting cold, to high-speed chases, collisions, and endless ball throwing, many “normal” routines are actually putting dogs at risk. In this episode, we dig into what safe, effective exercise really looks like. Mel explains what the canine body actually needs, and why those first 10–15 minutes of on-lead walking can completely change the picture. Together, Lauren and Mel explore how simple management choices - like using pathways, long lines, and food scattering - can prevent that explosive first sprint and reduce injury risk before it even starts. They also talk through real-life scenarios, including multi-dog households and dogs returning to ‘normal’ walks following an injury. You’ll hear how to safely reintroduce off-lead time, when play together is helpful (and when it’s not), and how to step in before fun turns into a crash. This is all about understanding arousal, movement, and giving your dog the best chance to move well and stay sound. We also explore the hidden risks in everyday environments, from wet ground and deep sand to pebble beaches and even different types of astroturf. Plus, we cover how exercise should change across your dog’s life, from older dogs with arthritic changes to fit, active sports dogs, and why nutrition needs to support increased training load. If you want to exercise your dog in a way that builds strength, protects their body, and supports long-term health, this episode is for you.
