  1. Free Labour: The Real Cost of Becoming a Nurse from The Gritty Nurse, opens in a new tab

    Sep 10, 202630 min

Nursing students in Canada and the U.S. can rack up 800–1,400+ mandatory clinical hours before they graduate — and not one of them is paid. In this episode, The Gritty Nurse Amie Archibald-Varley, traces that unpaid-labour model back to its actual origin: Florence Nightingale's 1860s training school and the 2,000+ hospital "training schools" that turned her vision into free ward staff within a generation. From there, Amie tracks how nursing education got professionalized, expensive, and gendered — comparing it to paid co-ops in engineering and the trades, unpacking why nursing training stayed unpaid while other fields didn't, and revisiting a piece of history most nurses have never heard of: a U.S. federal program that paid 85% of the country's nursing students to go to school, eighty years ago. If you've ever wondered why nursing students foot the bill and do the labour, this is the episode that connects all of it — with the receipts. Free Labour: The Real Cost of Becoming a Nurse Why do nursing students do the labour of employees and pay like tourists — in both Canada and the United States? In this episode, we go back over 150 years to trace exactly how we got here. In this episode: The NCLEX fee increase hitting Canada and the U.S. on the same day in 2027 — the first change to either fee since 2000 Florence Nightingale's 1860 training school at St Thomas' Hospital, the two-tier "probationer" system, and how fast her model turned into free hospital labour once it crossed the Atlantic to Bellevue, New Haven, and Massachusetts General How nursing education moved from hospital basements into universities — and how the cost moved onto students while the unpaid-labour model stayed exactly the same Real tuition and clinical-hour numbers from both countries, and testimonials from nursing students describing placements as "free labour" How nursing's unpaid clinical model compares to paid co-ops in engineering and the trades — including real wage data The gender question underneath all of this: who gets the paid seat, and what that means for lifetime earnings The U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps — a WWII-era federal program that paid full tuition, stipends, and housing for nursing students, reaching 85% of all nursing students in the country by 1945 — and what today's hospital-run "earn while you learn" programs (Duke, HCA, SSM Health, and others) prove is still possible What actually needs to change, and where the pressure is already building Like, Share and SUBSCRIBE! * Listen on Apple Podcasts – : The Gritty Nurse Podcast on Apple Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-gritty-nurse/id1493290782 * Watch on YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@thegrittynursepodcast Stay Connected: Website: grittynurse.com Instagram: @grittynursepod TikTok: @thegrittynursepodcast Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100064212216482 X (Twitter): @GrittyNurse Collaborations & Inquiries: For sponsorship opportunities or to book Amie for speaking engagements, visit: grittynurse.com/contact REFERENCES National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) — NCLEX registration fee increase announcement, effective February 1, 2027 British Journal of Nursing — "The legacy of Florence Nightingale's educational reforms for nursing" Wikipedia — Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery The Hospital (1917), "The Nightingale School and St. Thomas's Hospital," via PMC Old Operating Theatre Museum — "Why did nursing need to be reformed in the 19th century?" 2. Good Grief & How Healthcare Teaches Us To Bury It from The Gritty Nurse, opens in a new tab

    Aug 28, 202638 min

This week, grief was impossible to avoid — Hayden Panettiere, Dolly Parton, Tim Curry, and Peter Cullen all left us within days of each other, and the collective mourning was loud, public, and completely normal. But what happens when the person who dies isn't a celebrity — it's your patient, your coworker, or someone in your own family, and you're the healthcare provider who's supposed to hold it together anyway? In this episode on The Gritty Nurse with Amie Archibald-Varley, I get personal about my own experience with grief, then break down exactly how nurses and healthcare providers are trained — from nursing school through clinicals to the bedside — to suppress it. I dig into why that training is maladaptive (with the research to back it up: burnout, complicated grief, even mortality risk), how it complicates our ability to grieve our own losses, and what "good grief" could actually look like if we stopped bottling it up — for our own health, and for our patients' care too. It's time we stop teaching healthcare providers that big girls and big boys don't cry. This episode explores the often overlooked topic of grief among healthcare providers, emphasizing how the current training and workplace culture suppress emotional expression and the profound impact this has on mental health and patient care. keywords healthcare, grief, burnout, emotional health, nursing, death, compassion, Schwartz rounds, mental health, professional culture Listen on Apple Podcasts – : The Gritty Nurse Podcast on Apple Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-gritty-nurse/id1493290782 * Watch on YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@thegrittynursepodcast Stay Connected: Website: grittynurse.com Instagram: @grittynursepod TikTok: @thegrittynursepodcast Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100064212216482 X (Twitter): @GrittyNurse Collaborations & Inquiries: For sponsorship opportunities or to book Amie for speaking engagements, visit: grittynurse.com/contact Please LIKE, COMMENT and SUBSCRIBE! 3. Silence Isn't Safety, It's Strategy: Inside St. Joe's Fight Against Workplace Violence from The Gritty Nurse, opens in a new tab

    Aug 13, 202649 min

Would your hospital admit that staff get assaulted on the job — in public, with real numbers? St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton just did. And it's exposing a crisis most hospitals would rather not talk about. In this episode, I sit down with St. Joe's CEO Mike Heenan to unpack the numbers behind their decision to go public: at least 4 staff members verbally or physically assaulted every day — roughly 1,400 incidents a year, and that's just what gets reported. We dig into what it took to make transparency the policy, not the exception, and what other health systems are still avoiding. We also look at what this means nationally, using the CFNU's 2025 National Nurses Survey: 9 in 10 Canadian nurses experienced verbal abuse from a patient in the past year Workers' comp claims for violence against nurses have nearly tripled in Ontario since 2012 Healthcare workers are 5x more likely to be attacked on the job than workers in any other sector Between 2006–2021, only 12 Canadian court cases involving a nurse victim resulted in a sentencing decision Mike shares what it actually takes to build a safer hospital — leadership buy-in, community engagement, and the willingness to say "yes, this happens here." We also break down why I'm supporting Bill S-233, which would require courts to treat an assault against a healthcare worker as an aggravating factor at sentencing — meaning judges would have to weigh it as a more serious offence, not just business as usual. If you're a nurse, a healthcare worker, or someone who's ever wondered why hospitals stay quiet about this — this episode is for you. Fun fact I stumbled on while researching this: St. Joe's traces back to a group of Sisters of St. Joseph caring for cholera victims in railway sheds in the 1850s — that origin story alone would make a killer future episode. About Mike Heenan Dr. Mike Heenan is President and CEO of St. Joseph's Health System and President of St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton. He joined St. Joe's in November 2023 and was named permanent President and CEO of the health system in June 2025. Before St. Joe's, he served as Ontario's Assistant Deputy Minister, Hospitals and Capital, during the COVID-19 pandemic, and has held executive leadership roles across various hospital settings. He holds a PhD in Business Administration/Health Policy Management from McMaster University. 4. A Battle Cry for Change: Postpartum Psychosis, Systemic Failure, and the Case of Lindsay Clancy from The Gritty Nurse, opens in a new tab

    Aug 7, 202623 min

In this new episode on The Gritty Nurse Podcast with Amie Archibald-Varley, we examine the case of Lindsay Clancy through the lens of postpartum psychosis and the catastrophic gaps in mental health care that allowed it to go unrecognized and untreated. I start with the question that should be asked before every postpartum antidepressant prescription: has this patient been screened for bipolar disorder? It's now considered the gold standard of care — and it only became standard practice because of this case. From there, we talk about what early screening should look like more broadly, what coordinated care between obstetric and psychiatric providers actually requires, and why compassion — not judgment — has to be the starting point if we want to prevent the next tragedy instead of just mourning it. If you're here for sensationalism, this isn't the episode for you. These are real people, a real family, and real suffering. Our purpose is not to relitigate what happened, but to ask why it happened, and what needs to change so it doesn't happen again. This is the conversation healthcare needs to be having — about postpartum psychosis, about the mothers falling through the cracks, and about the systemic changes required to catch them before it's too late. keywords postpartum psychosis, mental health, systemic failure, screening, care coordination, maternal health, psychiatric emergency, postpartum depression, bipolar disorder, healthcare gaps key topics Postpartum psychosis and its symptoms System failures in mental health care and prescription practices Importance of early screening for bipolar disorder and depression Systematic gaps in postpartum care and follow-up The Lindsay Clancy case and systemic accountability Role of healthcare providers in recognizing red flags Need for coordinated care among multiple prescribers Impact of medication polypharmacy and withdrawal Advocacy for improved postpartum mental health protocols Community and systemic responsibility in preventing tragedies * Listen on Apple Podcasts – : The Gritty Nurse Podcast on Apple Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-gritty-nurse/id1493290782 * Watch on YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@thegrittynursepodcast Stay Connected: Website: grittynurse.com Instagram: @grittynursepod TikTok: @thegrittynursepodcast Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100064212216482 X (Twitter): @GrittyNurse Collaborations & Inquiries: For sponsorship opportunities or to book Amie for speaking engagements, visit: grittynurse.com/contact

    Jul 30, 20261 hr 0 min

Frontline pressures have reached a boiling point. In this swapcast episode, nurses Erica and Amie tackle the wave of nursing strikes across Massachusetts (MNA) and British Columbia (BCNU), exploring what these recent labor actions reveal about the true state of healthcare. Together, they dive into the harsh realities nurses are standing up against—from unsafe staffing ratios and lack of workplace respect to burnout and corporate greed. Erica and Amie also address the elephant in the room: "scab nurses." They break down the ethical, emotional, and financial strain traveling replacement nurses place on striking staff, how hospital systems use high-paid temporary labor to undercut union power, and the complex reality of nursing ethics vs. corporate greed. More importantly, they share actionable insights on how nurses can build genuine solidarity, mobilize for patient safety, and use their collective voice to drive real structural change. 7. 7 Years Ago, I Hid Under My Desk--And Seven Years Later, Almost to The Day... She Was Walked Out. from The Gritty Nurse, opens in a new tab

    Jul 3, 202617 min

Content note: this episode discusses workplace violence, suicidal ideation and psychological harm in a clinical/workplace setting. This week, almost seven years to the day since I walked out of a role where I once hid under my desk to escape a leader who ran her unit on fear, that same leader was walked out of hers. This isn't a celebration episode. I don't take pleasure in anyone losing their income or their identity. But I can't stay quiet about what it means that it took seven years — seven years of turnover, burnout, and silence — for accountability to catch up. In this solo episode, I break down five things we need to talk about: how healthcare culture protects powerful people who lead through fear, why "getting results" is not the same as good leadership, what real accountability structures should look like, and why we need to stop rewarding leaders who manage through intimidation instead of trust. This one is personal. If you've ever made yourself small to survive a shift, this episode is for you.

  8. Follow The Legislation, Fix The Insurance! Nurse Psychotherapy Supports Mental Health from The Gritty Nurse, opens in a new tab

    Jun 26, 202631 min

With a growing mental health crisis and a system bogged down by waitlists and rigid silos, a powerful paradigm shift is happening across Canada: the rise of nurse-led psychotherapy. In this educational episode, we sit down with Sheena Howard (BScN, MA, RYT, RN) , award-winning Nurse Psychotherapist and the founder of Acceptance Psychotherapy. We dive deep into why Registered Nurses are uniquely positioned to transform mental healthcare. Grounded in a holistic nursing blueprint, nurse psychotherapists don't just treat symptoms in isolation; they integrate biological, psychological, and social factors—bridging the gap between the physical nervous system, medication management, and emotional trauma. However, paving this independent path comes with major friction. Sheena pulls back the curtain on the institutional gatekeeping, regulatory ambiguities, and insurance barriers that independent nurse providers face daily. More importantly, she shares evidence-backed strategies on how to overcome these hurdles: by shifting focus from restrictive corporate insurance policies to strict provincial legislation, building multi-disciplinary alliances, and creating inclusive, trauma-informed clinical spaces. This conversation is a masterclass in healthcare advocacy and systemic disruption for any clinician ready to expand their scope and build a practice on their own terms. 10. From the ICU to the Page: Nurse Author Tilda Shalof on Why Nurses Must Tell Their Stories from The Gritty Nurse, opens in a new tab

    Jun 11, 202637 min

What happens when a nurse picks up a pen and refuses to stay quiet? She becomes Tilda Shalof — ICU nurse, bestselling author, patient advocate, and one of Canada's most powerful voices for the nursing profession. In this episode of The Gritty Nurse Podcast, host Amie Archibald-Varley sits down with Tilda Shalof, RN, BScN, CNCC(C), a veteran nurse from Toronto General Hospital's Medical-Surgical ICU and the author of six books — including the acclaimed A Nurse's Story , The Making of a Nurse , Camp Nurse , Opening My Heart , Lives in the Balance , and Bringing It Home . Her work has been translated into French, Chinese, Japanese, and Vietnamese, reaching nurses and patients across the globe. Tilda has spent decades doing what nurses do best — caring for the critically ill, advocating for patients, and working in the most demanding environments in healthcare. But she's also done something radical: she wrote it all down and made the world pay attention. In this conversation, Amie and Tilda dig into: Why nursing stories matter more now than ever — and how storytelling is a form of advocacy What Tilda learned about the healthcare system when she became a patient herself after open-heart surgery The moral courage it takes to be a nurse — and why the profession is "the opposite of despair" How nurses can combat burnout by finding community, voice, and purpose through their stories The hidden world of home care, ICU nursing , and everything in between What it means to be a nurse-first, author-second — and why that distinction matters Whether you're a nurse on the front lines, a nursing student wondering if you have what it takes, or a healthcare advocate who believes the system needs to change — this episode will remind you why nurses' voices are essential, urgent, and worth amplifying. 📚 Find Tilda Shalof: 🌐 Website: www.nursetilda.com 📷 Instagram: @nurse.tilda 📧 Contact: tilda@nursetilda.com * Listen on Apple Podcasts – : The Gritty Nurse Podcast on Apple Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-gritty-nurse/id1493290782 * Watch on YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@thegrittynursepodcast Stay Connected: Website: grittynurse.com Instagram: @grittynursepod TikTok: @thegrittynursepodcast Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100064212216482 X (Twitter): @GrittyNurse Collaborations & Inquiries: For sponsorship opportunities or to book Amie for speaking engagements, visit: grittynurse.com/contact Thank you to Hospital News for being a collaborative partner with the Gritty Nurse! www.hospitalnews.com

  11. What Nurses Don't Know About the Law Could Cost Them Everything w/ Dr. Cambria Nwsou DNP, RN, LNC from The Gritty Nurse, opens in a new tab

    Jun 4, 202648 min

Do you actually know your rights as a nurse? What does it take to go from the operating room to the courtroom — and why should every nurse care? In this episode of The Gritty Nurse Podcast, host Amie Archibald-Varley sits down with the remarkable Dr. Cambria Nwosu, RN — a nurse whose career has taken her from high-stakes surgical suites to the frontlines of legal nursing consulting and healthcare policy advocacy. Cambria's story is a masterclass in what's possible when nurses refuse to stay in their lane. Amie and Cambria dig into the real, often unspoken truth that nurses deserve to know: your legal rights matter, and understanding them can protect your license, your patients, and your career. They break down what a nurse legal consultant actually does, why it's a growing and essential field, and how policy decisions made far from the bedside are quietly reshaping the profession you work in every day. Drawing on her outspoken social media advocacy — where Cambria has built a community of nurses hungry for truth, transparency, and change — this conversation goes beyond the theory and gets gritty about the systemic issues nurses face and what they can actually do about it. In this episode: → Cambria's path from OR nurse to legal nursing consultant → What nurse legal consultants do and why it matters → Know your rights: legal literacy every nurse needs → The intersection of policy, law, and everyday nursing practice → Why nurse advocacy is not optional — it's essential → Building a platform and using your voice online Whether you're at the bedside, in the boardroom, or building something new — this episode is your reminder that nurses are powerful, and it's time to act like it. ───────────────────────────── ABOUT DR. CAMBRIA NWOSU ───────────────────────────── Dr. Cambria Nwosu is a registered nurse, legal nurse consultant, and passionate healthcare advocate whose career spans the operating room, legal consulting, and public health policy. 13. Exposing The Barriers: Why Are Nurse Practitioners Not Practicing To Their Full Scope in Canada? Discussions with CEO of NPAO Dr. Michelle Acorn from The Gritty Nurse, opens in a new tab

    May 21, 202641 min

In this urgent episode, host Amie Archibald-Varley sits down with Dr. Michelle Acorn , CEO of the Nurse Practitioners' Association of Ontario (NPAO) , to rip the band-aid off a system that refuses to evolve. Dr. Acorn pulls no punches: Nurse Practitioners are trained, capable, and ready — and they're being held back by outdated policy, inadequate funding, and a government content to watch the primary care crisis deepen rather than act. What you'll hear in this episode: The full scope of what Ontario's inaction actually means for patients on the ground Why NPs remain one of the most underleveraged solutions in Canada's healthcare system The funding reforms and regulatory barriers that must be dismantled — now What a truly patient-centered, NP-inclusive system could look like — and the path to get there Why this moment is a turning point This is the conversation healthcare needs to have. The one that doesn't end with "we'll study it further." If you care about access to care, about equity, about a system that finally treats Nurse Practitioners as the leaders they are — this episode is required listening. Subscribe, share, and turn up the volume. The gritty truth can't wait. Update: The April 1st Deadline Has Come and Gone. Ontario's Patients Are Paying for It. The federal government drew a line in the sand: by April 1, 2026, provinces must ensure that medically necessary services delivered by Nurse Practitioners are publicly covered. Ontario blinked — and millions of patients are now left holding the bill. As reported by CBC News , Ontario failed to meet the federal deadline, leaving Ontarians without primary care and forcing them to pay out-of-pocket for services that should never cost them a dime. This isn't a bureaucratic hiccup. This is a political choice — and people without a family doctor are the ones suffering the consequences. The Gritty Nurse isn't here for polite conversation. We're here to start the revolution. More About Dr. Michelle Acorn Dr. Acorn has over 35 years of nursing, health systems and leadership expertise. NP Acorn transitioned to her NPAO CEO role in 2024. She previously was the inaugural Chief Nurse with the International Council of Nurses, a former Provincial Chief Nursing Officer in Ontario, and has served as a NPAO President. Dr. Acorn was inducted as an inaugural Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Nursing (FCAN), Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN), Fellow of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland (FFNMRCSI, Ad Eundem), and Fellow of the Queens Nursing Institute in the United Kingdom. NP Acorn has received prestigious recognitions including the Nurse Practitioner Association of Canada Award of Excellence and Premier's Award Nominee for Outstanding Scholars and Leaders. She was named one of the top 20 visionary CEOs in Canada (2024), and top 25 women of influence in Canada (2025) and received a King Charles III Coronation Medal (2025). Michelle received the inaugural Canadian Nurses Association highest merit Sapphire Award in 2025. Dr. Acorn upholds all the NP advanced practice role domains. She is diploma to post-doctoral educationally prepared, is a Doctor of Nurse Practitioner/ Nursing Practice, dually registered as both a Primary Health Care and Adult Nurse Practitioner, and a certified Global Nurse Consultant. Dr. Acorn's diverse clinical expertise includes practicing in the Emergency, as a Hospitalist, innovating GAIN (Geriatric Assessment and Intervention Networks), and pioneering the most responsible provider (MRP) impacts of a NP–led model of inpatient hospital care as well as NP primary care models in corrections. NP Michelle continues to practice in the community enhancing access to care for health equity seeking populations. 14. The Obedient Nurse: How the "Good Nurse" Myth Quietly Paves the Way for Authoritarianism— and learning Hope Is a Discipline from The Gritty Nurse, opens in a new tab

    May 15, 20261 hr 9 min

What does Florence Nightingale have to do with authoritarianism? More than nursing wants to admit. In this episode of The Gritty Nurse Podcast, host Amie Archibald-Varley and guest Meg Lambrych, RN tackles one of nursing's most uncomfortable questions: why can't nurses criticize Florence Nightingale? She is nursing's most sacred icon — but what if the "good nurse" myth she built has been grooming nurses to accept obedience, silence, and their own oppression for over a century? Beyond this, what happens when we cannot critize the leaders we put in places of power? This is a conversation about nursing, power, and democracy. It is about lateral violence in healthcare, racism in nursing, and the cult of individualism that keeps nurses isolated, exhausted, and politically powerless. It is about what happens to a democracy when citizens — cannot bring themselves to criticize the leaders and figures they have placed into power. Because the conditions that silence nurses are the same conditions that allow fascism to take root. In this episode you will hear about: Florence Nightingale's legacy and why nursing needs to critically examine its own icons The "good nurse" myth and how it has normalized obedience, self-sacrifice, and silence in healthcare The connection between nursing culture, the cult of individualism, and the rise of fascism Lateral violence and racism in nursing and how they are tools of systemic oppression What happens to democracy when we cannot criticize our leaders Why collective power — not individual heroism — is what changes systems Hope as a discipline: what it means, why it matters, and how nurses can lead the way This episode is for nurses who are exhausted but still showing up. It is for healthcare workers who know something is broken and are ready to name it. It is for anyone watching democracy erode in real time and looking for a way to fight back that goes beyond voting. Because hope is not a feeling. Hope is a discipline. And collective power is the only thing that has ever dismantled oppression. Nursing week dedicated to honoring the nurses who show up for us at every stage of life. What does it really mean to care for someone — and why has the profession built around that act been so misunderstood for so long? To open the week, host Amie Archibald-Varley sits down with Sarah DiGregorio, journalist and author of Taking Care: The Story of Nursing and Its Power to Change Our World — a sweeping cultural history of nursing from the Stone Age to the present day. Part love letter, part urgent call for change, the book traces how nurses have always been at the vital intersection of healthcare and community, appearing in hospitals, schools, prisons, homes, and even at NASA — yet remain chronically undervalued in ways rooted in misogyny and racism. Sarah shares how personal encounters with nurses during family medical crises inspired her to write the book, why she believes we need to radically reframe nursing as a fundamental human necessity rather than a supporting role in medicine, and what gets lost when we reduce the profession's rich history to a single heroic figure like Florence Nightingale. We dig into the forgotten nurses whose contributions have been erased from the historical record, the urgent need for nurses to have a seat at the table in advocacy and policy-making, and the persistent racial disparities in healthcare that nursing is uniquely positioned to help address. Whether you're a nurse, a patient, a caregiver, or simply someone who believes the people doing the hardest work deserve to be seen — this conversation is for you. 📖 Taking Care is available wherever books are sold. More about Sarah DiGregorio: Sarah DiGregorio is a freelance journalist and critically acclaimed author whose work sits at the intersection of healthcare, humanity, and storytelling. She has written on health and other topics for the New York Times , the Washington Post , Slate , Insider , and others, and has been a keynote speaker for national audiences including the American Nurses Association, the National Association for Neonatal Nurses, Seattle Children's Hospital, and Rutgers University, among many others. She is the author of two books: Early: An Intimate History of Premature Birth (Harper, 2020) and Taking Care: The Story of Nursing and Its Power to Change Our World (Harper, 2023). The New York Times Book Review called Taking Care "a brilliant book" and described DiGregorio as "a beautiful writer," saying it deserves to be on the reading list for nursing and medical schools and on the bedside table of all politicians. In this episode on The Gritty Nurse, host Amie Archibald-Varley sits down with Dr. William Berk as he shares his transformative journey from a traditional emergency medicine career to exploring the depths of mental health and emotional well-being. After graduating from Brown University and completing his residency at Mount Sinai, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Berk faced the overwhelming challenges of working in a high-pressure environment. He discusses how the emotional toll of the pandemic led him to reevaluate his life choices, ultimately guiding him towards meditation and psychedelic therapies as tools for healing. Dr. Berk emphasizes the importance of creating safe spaces for healthcare professionals to discuss their mental health and the need for compassion in the medical field. 18. Perimenopause, Pleasure Principles and Purpose: Menopause On MY Terms with Shirley Weir from The Gritty Nurse, opens in a new tab

    Apr 16, 202641 min

"Normal is a setting on your dryer—not a standard for your health." In this episode of The Gritty Nurse , we're joined by Shirley Weir , the "Vagina Health Evangelist" and founder of Menopause Chicks . Shirley didn't just start a community of 50,000+ women; she started a revolution against the "Mokita"—the things we all know but refuse to discuss. As nurses, we see patients every day who dismiss their own suffering because they've been told it's "just part of being a woman." Shirley challenges this narrative head-on. We dive into the systemic gaps in women's health research, the "pleasure gap" in genitourinary care, and the grit required to navigate a healthcare system that was never designed with midlife women in mind. We're breaking down: The Perimenopause Pivot: Why your late 30s are the most critical time to start paying attention. The "Script Tip": A literal sentence you can use when a doctor tries to dismiss your symptoms. The Investment Phase: How to prioritize brain, bone, and heart health for your "second half." Systemic Advocacy: Why nurses are the ultimate bridge between clinical research and patient empowerment. Stop "sucking it up" and start advocating. This isn't just an ending—it's a milestone for celebration and a window for health investment. Guest Bio: Shirley Weir is a celebrated women's health advocate, author, TEDx speaker, and the founder of Menopause Chicks . Since 2012, she has been on a mission to dismantle the silence surrounding perimenopause and menopause, reframing this life stage as a milestone for celebration rather than a season of suffering. Through her private online community of over 300,000 women, Shirley empowers her audience to get curious about their hormone health and provides them with the evidence-based tools they need to advocate for themselves in the exam room. Apr 2, 202646 min

Nursing and the arts are both built on the raw, unspoken language of the human soul; one heals the body through rhythm and care, the other heals the spirit through melody and expression—but both require a radical empathy that can only be sustained when we protect our own light, because you cannot pour from an empty vessel when you've given the very best of yourself away to your work In this powerhouse episode of The Gritty Nurse, Host Amie Archibald-Varley sits down with Catherine Harrison , the official sponsor for mental health at the JUNOS and a renowned music industry leadership and mental health consultant.
