In this month’s Ask Me Anything episode , host Amelia Phillips answers three listener questions spanning some very different corners of women’s health. First, do those viral lymphatic drainage gloves actually do anything? Amelia unpacks how the lymphatic system really works, where manual lymphatic drainage has evidence behind it, and whether at-home massage tools can genuinely “detox” your body or simply help with temporary puffiness. Next, what do you do when you’re faithfully taking vitamin D but your blood levels just won’t budge? Amelia runs through some of the common reasons vitamin D can remain stubbornly low, including dosage, absorption, timing, body composition, medications and even the time of year you test. Finally, a listener taking a GLP-1 medication has lost 8kg but is struggling with fatigue and a dramatically reduced appetite. Amelia explains why nutrient density becomes so important when you’re eating less, which foods give you the biggest nutritional bang for your buck, and how to protect your protein, fibre, healthy fat, vitamin and mineral intake when there simply isn’t much room on the plate. Plus, Amelia shares details of her new 14 Day Vitality Reset and the upcoming Prevention World Menopause Day Lunch in Sydney , where she’ll be joining a line-up of leading women’s health experts. In this episode, host Amelia Phillips sits down with naturopathic doctor and women’s health expert Lara Briden to unpack why losing weight can suddenly feel so much harder after 40. If you’re eating well, exercising and doing all the things that used to work, but the weight, particularly around your middle, just won’t budge, Lara explains what may be going on. From changing hormones and insulin sensitivity to sleep, stress, nutrition and our changing metabolism, they explore the many factors that can influence body composition in midlife. Lara shares practical strategies for improving insulin sensitivity, how our approach to protein, carbohydrates and meal timing may need to evolve, and where fasting and calorie restriction fit in. She also discusses some of her go-to nutrients and supplements for metabolic health, including magnesium, choline, inositol, taurine and glycine. Plus, Lara reveals what she would prioritise in a simple three-month metabolism reset for women over 40 who want to lose excess body fat without resorting to increasingly restrictive diets. If you’ve been struggling with sleep for a while, whether it’s difficulty falling asleep, those dreaded 3am wake-ups or sleep changes during perimenopause, you may have wondered whether it’s time to consider medication. But with sleeping tablets, melatonin, antihistamines and cannabis-based products all being discussed as potential sleep aids, it can be difficult to know what actually works, what the downsides are and where to start. In this Mini Motivation episode of Healthy Her , Amelia Phillips is joined by clinical psychologist and sleep researcher Dr Amelia Scott , founder of Circa Sleep , to unpack the different options available and where they may, or may not, have a role. They also discuss why persistent sleep problems shouldn’t automatically be treated with a sleeping pill, and the importance of investigating underlying causes, including conditions such as sleep apnoea. In this episode, you’ll learn: The most commonly prescribed medications for sleep and how they work Where benzodiazepines and Z-drugs fit into the picture Why some antidepressants and antihistamines are used for sleep What the evidence says about melatonin and who may benefit What we currently know about CBD and THC-based products for sleep The potential limitations and downsides of relying on sleep medications Why conditions such as sleep apnoea can sometimes be mistaken for “poor sleep” When medication may be useful — and when addressing the underlying cause is more important About the guest: Dr Amelia is a Clinical Psychologist and sleep researcher with a Master of Clinical Psychology and PhD from the University of Sydney. If you’ve always been a good sleeper and suddenly find yourself wide awake at 3am, struggling to fall asleep, waking more often or simply not feeling refreshed in the morning, perimenopause could be playing a role. Sleep disturbances affect an estimated 40–60% of women during perimenopause, and the numbers are even higher among women seeking help through menopause clinics. Most importantly, they discuss what actually helps. From evidence-based strategies for insomnia to the everyday habits that support deeper, more restorative sleep, Dr Amelia shares practical ways to get your sleep back on track. In this episode, you’ll learn: Why sleep can suddenly change during perimenopause How fluctuating hormones can influence sleep Why waking during the night can become harder to recover from How stress and anxiety interact with sleep in midlife The common sleep mistakes that can unintentionally make insomnia worse What CBT-I (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia) is and why it’s considered a first-line treatment for chronic insomnia Practical strategies to improve sleep quality and consistency When disrupted sleep is worth investigating further Whether your sleep has only recently started to change or you’ve been struggling for years, this episode will help you understand what may be driving it, and what you can do about it. In this episode of Healthy Her, host Amelia Phillips is joined by her sister-in-law, Susannah Myerson, founder of the Sober Curious Reset, to discuss something so many women are contemplating in mid-life: how to drink less. In this Mini Motivation episode, host Amelia Phillips is back with the Microbiome Doctor, gastroenterologist Dr Paul Froomes, to find out how we can all master our gut microbiomes. Amelia asks about 'weeding and seeding', the best probiotics, and the potential of Akkermansia to support metabolic health and weight management. Plus, Dr Paul gives his go-to pre- and probiotics for a healthy, happy, balanced gut. About the guest: Dr Paul Froomes is a Melbourne-based gastroenterologist with over 30 years of experience helping patients with complex gastrointestinal disorders. Trained at Monash University and the Royal Australian College of Physicians, he has gone on to complete advanced training in endoscopy and oesophageal physiology, as well as a master’s degree in liver disease at the University of Melbourne. Beyond his hospital and clinic work, Dr Froomes has dedicated his career to finding the root causes of gut issues like IBS, reflux, and inflammatory bowel disease – publishing research, training doctors, and now building innovative treatment programs that are changing lives. Dr Froomes is the co-founder of The Microbiome Clinic™, a new age medical practice built to make his decades of learnings about the microbiome accessible to more patients and practitioners. After seeing countless people struggle with conditions that didn’t improve under standard care, he recognised the need for a model that treats the root cause – imbalances in the microbiome – rather than just the symptoms.
