On September 12, 2014, three-year-old William Tyrrell disappeared while playing at his foster grandmother’s home on Benaroon Drive in Kendall, New South Wales, Australia. Within hours, an enormous search was underway. Police, emergency services, and members of the community combed the surrounding bushland, creeks, roads, and properties looking for the little boy. But William was nowhere to be found. In Part One of this series, we go back to the beginning. We examine William’s life before his disappearance, the events of that morning, the frantic search that followed, and the earliest stages of an investigation that would become one of Australia’s most well-known missing child cases. In August of 1977, 22 year old Shari Lynn Roth left her apartment in North Conway, New Hampshire, for a short afternoon hike. She was supposed to arrive at the teen program where she worked by seven o’clock that evening, but she never showed up. Three days later, Shari was found murdered in the White Mountains. Nearly 50 years later, Shari’s case remains unsolved. Investigators are hoping brand new pictures, old hiking logs, memories from the trail, and information about a red Volkswagen Beetle could finally lead them to the person responsible. This episode examines the search for Shari, an investigation that appears to have exhausted its leads within its first year, and the questions that remain about whether she encountered a stranger, someone she knew, or someone familiar with the work she was doing in North Conway. Shari’s family is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. In this episode of The Next Chapter, I welcome survivor advocate and former law enforcement officer Kara Robinson Chamberlain back to Voices for Justice. Since Kara’s first appearance in 2022, she has co-created and hosted Survivor’s Guide to True Crime, helped shape a scripted film about her life, worked on a documentary exploring ethics in true crime, and stepped into a new role as the host and investigator of Somebody Knows Something. Kara shares how motherhood pushed her beyond coping and toward healing, and how her lived experience influences the way she approaches families, witnesses, law enforcement, and the online true crime community. Fifteen-year-old Sophie Reeder vanished in the early hours of May 20, 2017. In her bedroom, a candle was still burning. Three hundred dollars was left behind. On her calendar, one date had been marked with a mysterious “X.” Surveillance cameras captured Sophie walking alone along Davie Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Hours later, her phone went silent at a nearby apartment complex and Sophie was never seen again. On the morning of March 9, 1996, Amberly Mendoza was found murdered in her bedroom in Yuma, Arizona. She was just 10 years old. Her family’s home had been filled with people following a birthday celebration, yet someone was able to reach Amberly, sexually assault her, take her life, and leave without being identified. Thirty years later, investigators have DNA believed to belong to her killer. So why has no one been held accountable? The FBI is now offering a reward of up to $30,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction. On May 24, 1986, nineteen-year-old Shelley Sikes left work at Gaido’s Seafood Restaurant in Galveston and began driving toward her boyfriend’s home. She never arrived. Witnesses saw a pickup force her car off the road, and her Ford Pinto was discovered hours later with the driver’s window shattered and her belongings still inside. Two men were ultimately convicted of aggravated kidnapping, but Shelley’s case is not closed. She has never been found, and both men died in prison without providing information that brought her home. Investigators have made it clear that the case will remain open until Shelley is found. Shelley was 4 feet 11 inches tall and weighed approximately 90 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. She has a scar on her right knee and was unable to bend her right index finger. On the Friday before Mother’s Day in 2018, Ana Del Valle stayed home awaiting what should have been a routine visit. In the neighboring apartment, Basil Gray returned carrying a cup of coffee. By the end of the weekend, both apartments in Brooklyn’s Bushwick Houses would be crime scenes and two seemingly ordinary lives would be connected by a mystery investigators still cannot explain. There was no obvious motive, little physical evidence, and no clear account of how two people could be killed only steps apart in broad daylight without anyone seeing enough to identify who was responsible. In February 2020, 26-year-old Marquis Martin disappeared after working a night shift at his second job. For nearly a month, his family, friends, and community searched for him, pleading for answers and for help from law enforcement. When Marquis was finally found, it was the worst possible outcome: he had been murdered. But as his loved ones pushed for justice, they were forced to confront another painful question. A racist image connected to the sheriff’s own son began circulating, raising serious concerns about whether Marquis’ case was handled with the urgency, care, and impartiality it deserved. Six years later, no arrests have been made. No persons of interest have been publicly identified. And Marquis’ family is still waiting for answers. In the early morning hours of July 29, 2012, 21-year-old Kortne Stouffer vanished from her apartment in Palmyra, Pennsylvania. But this wasn’t a quiet night. There were people outside her door, arguments, noise complaints and calls to police. Neighbors awake and paying attention. But by morning, Kortne was gone. Kortne Stouffer was last seen in Palmyra, Pennsylvania in the early morning hours of July 29th, 2012. She is a white female who was 5’8” and weighed approximately 115–120 lbs at the time of her disappearance, with blonde hair and green eyes. She has three distinct tattoos: “One Love” on her right arm, three stars on the top of her right foot, and flowers surrounding a pistol design on her left side. Pepita Redhair was 27 years old when she disappeared from Albuquerque, New Mexico on or about March 24, 2020. In the days and weeks that followed, her family desperately searched for answers while facing roadblocks, conflicting information, and a lack of attention during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. More than six years later, Pepita’s loved ones are still searching for the truth about what happened to her and continuing to advocate for justice. Pepita is a Native American woman with brown hair and brown eyes. She is approximately 5'1" and 140 pounds. She has two beauty marks on her chin and distinctive tattoos, including a dinosaur on her right forearm, a koi fish on her left forearm, a butterfly on her shoulder, and the word “redhair” tattooed elsewhere on her body. In the final part of Nancy Guthrie’s case, we pick up with the update that changed everything: law enforcement had recovered previously inaccessible doorbell camera footage showing a masked, armed man outside Nancy’s Tucson home in the early morning hours after she was last seen. From there, the case only gets more complicated. In this episode, I walk through the video, the suspect description, the DNA reportedly found at Nancy’s home, the people questioned and later released or cleared, the public focus on Nancy’s family, the Mexico angle, and the intense media ecosystem that has formed around this case. And just as this episode was being posted, a new report surfaced involving an anonymous tip and a renewed search effort in Mexico another reminder that Nancy’s case is still active, still developing, and still desperately in need of answers. Nancy Guthrie is still missing. She is white, 5’4” tall about 150lbs with brown hair and blue eyes. The FBI is also asking for help identifying the suspect seen in the recovered doorbell camera footage. He is described as a male, approximately 5’9” to 5’10” with an average build. In the video, he is wearing dark clothing, gloves, a mask, and a black 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack. For years, people have asked what active searching for Alissa looks like in 2026. In this episode, I’m taking you behind the scenes of a recent search effort that left me with more questions than answers. After being directed toward a specific area, our search team brought in trained dogs. During the search, the dogs alerted in a location that raised serious concerns. Despite those alerts, law enforcement has declined to conduct additional follow-up at this time. This episode isn’t about speculation. It’s about documenting what happened, sharing the reality of searching for a missing loved one decades later, and explaining why families often find themselves fighting for answers long after public attention fades. Alissa Turney disappeared from Phoenix, Arizona, on May 17, 2001, and remains missing. As the story unfolded, each new detail raised more questions than answers. 84 year old Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her home in Tucson, Arizona on January 31st, 2026. Like so many people in the US, 32-year-old Nicole Fitts was struggling with housing insecurity. She worked at Best Buy in San Francisco, California and would often travel up to 4 hours a day to commute to work from wherever she was staying at the time. Sometimes the commute was so bad, Nicole would just crash on a couch until her next shift. This meant she would have to leave her two-year-old daughter Arianna with a babysitter for extended periods of time. This was the reality of trying to make ends meet for Nicole. Eventually, one of her coworkers noticed what Nicole was going through just to get to work each day and offered for her and Arianna to move in with her. Nicole was ecstatic. She scraped together enough money to get Arianna a new bed and told the babysitter she was coming to pick up her daughter. But she was met with resistance from the babysitter, saying they were out of town taking Arianna to Disneyland, she’d have to grab her daughter another day. Nicole was upset, obviously because she was ready to pick up her daughter but also because they didn’t tell her they’d be taking Arianna out of town. According to Nicole’s new roommate Goyette Williams, the plan was for Nicole to pick up her daughter on April 3rd, 2016. But on the night of April 1st, Nicole withdrew a large amount of money from her bank account, says she was going to meet the babysitter and would be back in 5 minutes. A week later, Nicole’s body was found in a local park. Nicole’s killer has never been caught and Arianna remains missing to this day. 32-year-old Nicole Fitts was found murdered in McLaren Park in San Francisco, California on April 8th 2016. She was a black female with black hair and brown eyes. Nicole’s daughter, Arianna Fitts was last seen in Oakland California in February 2016. When she went missing, she was 2 years old, weighed approximately 45 pounds and was 2 feet tall. She is a black female with black hair and brown eyes. As of recording this episode, Arianna Fitts would now be 8 years old. The San Francisco Police Department is offering a $250,000 reward for information about Nicole and Arianna. And Best Buy is offering an additional $10,000 reward. If you see Arianna, call 911 immediately. On February 4, 2003, four-year-old Sofia Juarez left her home in Kennewick, Washington, with a dollar in her hand and plans to walk to a nearby store. She never made it there. What followed was Washington State’s first AMBER Alert, a massive search, and a case that has haunted Sofia’s family and community for more than two decades. Over the years, investigators have pursued witness statements, vehicle descriptions, possible sightings, and renewed leads including a viral TikTok video that brought Sofia’s case back into the national spotlight. In this episode, we walk through the day Sofia disappeared, the investigation that followed, the people still searching for answers, and the questions that remain. Sofia Lucerno Juarez was four years old when she disappeared from Kennewick, Washington, on February 4, 2003. She is Hispanic, with brown hair and brown eyes. At the time, she was about 3 feet tall and weighed around 33 pounds. She was last seen wearing a blue or red long-sleeved shirt, blue overalls, violet socks, white shoes, and gold hoop earrings. She may use the last name Hernandez. Twenty-five years ago, my sister Alissa Turney disappeared. For most of that time, I have lived in the space between grief and action, between not knowing and refusing to look away. This episode is different. It is shorter, more personal, and less about retelling every detail of Alissa’s case than it is about marking what this anniversary means. Twenty-five years is an impossible amount of time to measure. It is birthdays missed, milestones stolen, questions unanswered, and a kind of grief that changes shape but never leaves.
