  1. Episode 150 - working with over-aroused, pumped, unfocused gundogs!

    Aug 15, 202636 min

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃 Tips and approaches for managing over-arousal in gundogs, whether it results in noise, unsteadiness, or lack of focus.

  2. Episode 149 - *new* course called PUPPY GUNDOG

    Jul 24, 202634 min

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃 Introducing the new Puppy Gundog course, plus answering lots of listener questions!

  3. Episode 148 - how I nearly lost a puppy I bred to rescue

    Jun 15, 202620 min

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃 In this episode, I talk about what I've learnt as a result of the recent extremely stressful situation I've experienced recently. A 9 month old puppy we bred was dumped at a rescue organisation. We were not told. The rescue refused to rehome him to us. PLUS listener Q&As.

  4. Episode 147 - ethics and head collars

    Apr 14, 202643 min

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃 Sometimes life is complicated. If dogs are losing out on opportunities for exercise and enrichment because people can't manage them, then their quota of 'good stuff' in life gets a lot lower. A dog which never leaves the house is going to experience the fewest unpleasant things in life - and also would be incredibly deprived, under-exercised and under-stimulated. R+ training needs to accommodate these complexities, and stop over-simplifying things. Because we live complicated lives which go beyond the 4 quadrants.

  5. Episode 146 - get those puppies swimming!

    Apr 8, 202631 min

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃 Loads of tips towards helping you to get pups swimming!

  6. Episode 145 - pointers, setters and HPRs are different (sometimes distance work is easier than up-close control)

    Mar 24, 202645 min

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃 In this episode, I talk about a certain subgroup of gundogs which are very motivated by environmental exploration/reinforcers. They require a different training approach. These dogs might find it much easier to work at a distance (with behaviours like the remote stop and the recall) and much harder to offer sustained focus up-close (as with heelwork).

  7. Episode 144 - marking vs steadiness, revisited

    Mar 11, 202626 min

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃 The best marking is most likely if we send the dog immediately the retrieve falls. However, this also erodes steadiness. What to do?

  8. Episode 143 - how releasing the dog at the right time, improves focus

    Feb 24, 202619 min

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃 I just wanted to drill down (pun intended) on this particular issue, because it's such a great one for improving focus and attention when you're battling environmental distractions.

  9. Episode 142 - fix your (dog's) focus!

    Feb 10, 202645 min

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃 I talk here about a few ways to help dogs which are struggling to offer us focus and attention. Do check out my Focus and Attention course, for more info.

  10. Episode - 141 - things that I wish people knew

    Jan 27, 20261 hr 12 min

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃 This is a random collection of thoughts directed towards helping people become better trainers by addressing things other than the usual 'how to train stuff'. From personality traits of effective trainers to gaps in knowledge and misassumptions.

  11. Episode 140 - how to train the point, flush and (steadiness to) fall

    Dec 17, 202541 min

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃 This sequence can be really confusing for people at first, leading to people often trying to train this in the actual order it actually happens.

  12. Episode 139 - Q&A bits and pieces

    Nov 29, 202549 min

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃 This episode is a little bit of everything. It is a buffet of an episode. Not sure if it's all you can eat, but it is a heck of a lot.

  13. Episode 138 - PUPPIES 8-12 weeks

    Nov 15, 20251 hr 1 min

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃 Here I waffle randomly about what I'm doing with puppies in this age range. It doesn't really involve much gundog-specific stuff, because it's about helping pups to feel safe in the world.

  14. Episode 137 - the value of picking up and some thoughts about docking

    Oct 30, 202545 min

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃 I talk here about the advantages of picking up, especially for HPR breeds (spaniels would also benefit for similar reasons) - and also offer some thoughts about docking after our experiences with our recent litter of Weim pups.

  15. Episode 136 - THE NEW BOOK IS OUT!

    Sep 11, 202510 min

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃 Yes, finally, it's here. The long-awaited sequel to *The Fundamentals*, the new book is called * Force-Free Gundog Training: Precision and Progression " and it's available in Amazons everywhere. Whoop whoop!

  16. Episode 135 - The New Book is Nearly Ready!

    Jul 27, 202536 min

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃 Amazingly, my new book (Force-Free Gundog Training: Precision and Progression) is nearly ready. WHOOP!! It should be out in a few weeks....

  17. Episode 134 - the come-in whistle, ticks and canine pregnancy

    Jul 10, 202521 min

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃 This is a ramble of an episode (both subject-wise and literally) covering ticks, the come-in whistle on retrieves and early canine pregnancy.

  18. Episode 133 - Trying to time a breeding (aka the right stuff, in the right place, at the right time)

    Jun 25, 202535 min

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃 In this episode, I recount our incredibly stressful race against the clock to get the right stuff, in the right place, at the right time. Phew.

  19. Episode 132 - working tests (the good, the bad, the ugly)

    Jun 18, 202516 min

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃 What are the pros and cons of working tests?

  20. Episode 131 - marking vs steadiness and moving recalls off the long-line

    Jun 1, 202528 min

🙃 Text me (Jo) at Hold the Line 🙃 This episode is an outdoor ramble (verbally and physically!)....
